Brushless permanent magnet machines (BPMMs) gained more importance due to the high power density ensured by permanent magnets with high energy densities. Therefore, a more compact design can be achieved compared to other types of electrical machines. However, the ferromagnetic components are typically driven near or above the saturation flux density at least at nominal load operation. This leads to non-sinusoidal linked fluxes in the stator coils and, hence, creates disruptive torque ripple during operation when the motor is fed with sinusoidal currents. Additionally, BPMMs often show a considerable cogging torque and, hence, torque ripple can even be noticed at no-load operation. In this article, a motor design with a certain number of significant flux harmonics is presented. Non-sinusoidal current waveforms were optimized in order to fulfill the operating performance requirements of the electric drive regarding efficiency and torque ripple. For impressing the desired current waveforms including higher harmonics related to the electrical frequency of the motor, the specification of the used power electronics has to be taken into account. Furthermore, the structure and design of the current control has a big impact on the possibility to impress specific current waveforms even at higher rotor speeds. This article is about a current control structure using an iterative learning control algorithm (ilc). In the introduction, different current control strategies are given that were published in the past. This will be followed by the presentation of the considered motor design. The control structure and the hardware used for experimental results are subsequently described. This will be followed by measurement results of the achieved currents and load torques and finally a conclusion is derived.

Sudden cardiac death resulting from ventricular arrhythmia is one of the leading causes of mortality in the United States. The beat-to-beat oscillations in the action potential duration (APD) of paced cardiac cells, defined as cardiac alternans, has been identified as a potential precursor to ventricular arrhythmia. Therefore, the annihilation of these alternans is a promising antiarrhythmic strategy. In this work, the small amplitude of alternans partial differential equation (PDE) for a one dimensional cable of cardiac cells is stabilized through model predictive control (MPC). In our proposed control strategy, both boundary and spatially distributed actuators are utilized in suppressing the alternans along the cable. The low-order MPC formulation is developed for the finite-dimensional, discrete state space representation of the PDE. Furthermore, input and state constraints are addressed explicitly in the MPC formulation. The input constraints may arise due to actuator limitations, while state constraints are naturally present in cardiac systems. By satisfying these constraints, we can ensure that the controller action will not induce conduction block in the cardiac cells. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the successful annihilation of alternans using the proposed control algorithm.

In this paper we consider the modeling and (robust) control of a DC-DC boost converter. In particular, we derive a mathematical model consisting of a constrained switched differential inclusion that includes all possible modes of operation of the converter. The obtained model is carefully selected to be amenable for the study of various important robustness properties. By exploiting this model we design a control algorithm that induces robust, global asymptotic stability of a desired output voltage value. The guaranteed robustness properties ensure proper operation of the converter in the presence of spatial regularization to reduce the high rate of switching. The establishment of these properties is enabled by recent tools for the study of robust stability in hybrid systems. Simulations illustrating the main results are included.

We propose several stochastic approximation implementations for related algorithms in flow-control of communication networks. First, a discrete-time implementation of Kelly's primal flow-control algorithm is proposed. Convergence with probability 1 is shown, even in the presence of communication delays and stochastic effects seen in link congestion indications. This ensues from an analysis of the flow-control algorithm using the asynchronous stochastic approximation (ASA) framework. Two relevant enhancements are then pursued: a) an implementation of the primal algorithm using second-order information, and b) an implementation where edge-routers rectify misbehaving flows. Next, discrete-time implementations of Kelly's dual algorithm and primal-dual algorithm are proposed. Simulation results a) verifying the proposed algorithms and, b) comparing the stability properties are presented.

In this paper we study the performance of two Power Control algorithms: the Adaptive Standard Power Control (ASPC) and the Standard Power Control (PCA) algorithms. Simulation of both algorithms is being done under three different network conditions including the case with varying SIR target. The results from our simulations are shown graphically. These results show that the performance ASPC is be better than PCA under the different network conditions considered in this paper. All simulations are done in MATLAB.

The perturbed system with input-output dynamics of arbitrary and well defined relative degree is considered in a reduced information environment. The almost instantaneous convergence to the origin is achieved via impulsive control acting in a concert with continuous super-twisting controller. The impulsive actions are implemented in a piece-wise constant format. The efficacy of the proposed control algorithm is verified via simulations.

A nonlinear fluid flow model is used in this paper to analyze and control DiffServ Networks. The controller design is based on the integrated dynamic congestion control strategy. In this paper different second order sliding mode controllers are proposed to solve the infinite switching problem. The same as standard sliding mode control, second order sliding mode technique is also robust to model uncertainties and disturbances, meanwhile overcome the inherent chattering problem which is more acceptable in application. The performance of the control algorithms are verified by the simulation results.

Haptic rendering of soft bodies is essential in medical simulations of procedures such as surgery or palpation. The most commonly used approach is to recreate the sense of touch using a specific design and control of a robotic arm. In this paper, we propose a new approach, based on soft-robotics technology. We create a tangible deformable device that allows users to "touch" soft tissues and perceive mechanical material properties, in a realistic manner. The device is able to dynamically provide user touch with different stiffness perceptions, thanks to actuators placed at the boundaries. We introduce a control algorithm, based on inverse Finite Element Analysis, which controls the actuators in order to recreate a desired stiffness that corresponds to the contact with soft tissues in the virtual environment. The approach uses antagonistic actuation principle to create a wide range of stiffness. We validate our algorithm and demonstrate the method using prototypes based on simple mechanisms.

In this paper, we consider the problem of blood glucose control for type 1 diabetic patients. In particular, we focus on developing control algorithms for an Artificial Pancreas which is a portable or implantable automated insulin delivery system composed of a continuous glucose monitor, an insulin pump, and a control law that links the measured blood glucose concentration and insulin delivery. We have designed Receding Horizon Control (RHC) (which is also known as the Model Predictive Control) for two specific patients, respectively, based on a data-driven linear time-varying state-space model developed in [12] for each patient using clinical data. The control parameters are tuned specifically for each patient. For patient 1, the RHC algorithm performs well with no information (e.g., amount and time) of meal intake, which results in the so-called feedback alone control. For patient 2, information of meal intake is necessary for the RHC algorithm to reach acceptable closed-loop performance, which results in the so-called feedback plus feedforward control. For both patients, we evaluate the performance of the RHC designs via simulation and compare the simulation results with clinical data. We also test the robustness of the RHC design with respect to estimation errors in the amount of carbohydrate content (CHO) of the meal.

Integrated continuous manufacturing offers ample opportunities for efficient and cost-effective pharmaceutical processes. Plant-wide control is required for meeting the stringent regulatory requirements on quality attributes of products in continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. This paper investigates plant-wide model predictive control (MPC) of an end-to-end continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing process with nearly 8000 state variables. The process includes two series of chemical synthesis and crystallization steps, followed by tablet formation steps. A subspace identification approach is adopted to obtain a linear low-dimensional description of the complex plant-wide dynamics. Quadratic dynamic matrix control algorithm is used to enable input-output formulation of the control problem, whose online computational cost is independent of the state dimension. The performance of the plant-wide MPC system is evaluated in a closed-loop setting with an existing nonlinear plant simulator equipped with a stabilizing control layer. The closed-loop simulation results demonstrate the ability of plant-wide MPC to facilitate flexible process operation and effective regulation of quality attributes of tablets.
