In conventional power system operation, droop control methods are used to facilitate load sharing among different generation sources. This method compensates for both active and reactive power imbalances by adjusting the output voltage magnitude and frequency of the generating unit. Both P-ω and Q-V droops have been used in synchronous machines for decades. Similar droop controllers were used in this study to develop a control algorithm for a three-phase isolated (islanded) inverter. Controllers modeled in a synchronous dq reference frame were simulated in PLECS and validated with the hardware setup. A small-signal model based on an averaged model of the inverter was developed to study the system's dynamics. The accuracy of this mathematical model was then verified using the data obtained from the experimental and simulation results. This validated model is a useful tool for the further dynamic analysis of a microgrid.

This paper presents and approach for optimizing the operation of a micro-Combined Heat and Power system (μCHP) in a real time price market scenario. The objective is to determine the optimal operation set-point for the μCHP for the following five minutes according to the real-time price signal sent by the System Operator (SO) so as to maximise the profits obtained from the operation of the device while thermal demand requirements are fulfilled. The control algorithm makes use of the relative price concept in the decision making process as well as price sensitivity information of the end-user. Results of the simulated case studies show the feasibility of the proposed model for controlling the operation of a μCHP in a real-time price based market scenario in terms of economical profitability compared with a conventional thermostat based operation mode.

A finite control set model predictive control strategy for the control of the stator currents of a synchronous reluctance motor driven by a three-level neutral point clamped inverter is presented in this paper. The presented algorithm minimizes the stator current distortions while operating the drive system at switching frequencies of a few hundred Hertz. Moreover, the power electronic converter is protected by overcurrents and/or overvoltages owing to a hard constraint imposed on the stator currents. To efficiently solve the underlying integer nonlinear optimization problem a sphere decoding algorithm serves as optimizer. To this end, a numerical calculation of the unconstrained solution of the optimization problem is proposed, along with modifications in the algorithm proposed in [1] so as to meet the above-mentioned control objectives. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

In this paper, a practical solution for suppression of voltage harmonics in high-voltage power supplies is proposed. The solution is based on three single-phase series active-power filters (SAPF) inserted in a common point of a synchronous generator (SG) through an injection transformer. Because of the SAPF position, implementation of low-voltage components enabling higher switching frequencies needed to compensate harmonics with a sufficient level of precision is fully justified. Combined with a sophisticated repetitive control algorithm and using a superior digital signal controller (DSC), an extremely low harmonic distortion in a large frequency span is achieved.

The test bed for the Measurement Science Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) includes a robot arm on a rail, conveyers, mannequins and a custom designed automated guided vehicle (AGV). The NIST AGV includes an onboard personal computer and control software, safety sensors, and an absolute positioning sensor system among other useful and research tools, sensors and equipment. A NIST-developed, smart diagnostic tool was used to design, adjust, and monitor vehicle parameters and control algorithms to enable robust autonomous vehicle control. The NIST Diagnostics Tool and its application to the NIST AGV are presented in this paper.

The new research trend in the residential solar generation systems, is to employ the parallel connected PV configuration rather than the series-connected configuration to satisfy the safety requirements and to make full use of the PV generated power. A novel interleaved Luo converter is proposed for the high voltage gain DC-DC conversion which integrates the merits of interleaved topologies and switched capacitor based topologies. The Super Lift (SL) Luo converter is becoming very popular in the DC-DC conversion processes due to high voltage gain, and simple circuitry. By using the interleaving technique, the input current ripple and output voltage ripple of the elementary SL Luo converter is reduced. Hence the proposed topology is suitable for the DC-DC conversion at the output of parallel/series-parallel connected PV modules, since the low ripple current at the output of PV module will improve the life span of the same. Incremental conductance based MPPT control algorithm, along with a PI controller is implemented in this paper. The disadvantage of the interleaved topology is the large component count. However, component ratings of the Interleaved SL Luo converter are reduced to half of that of a SL Luo converter. Hence the cost of the interleaved circuit can be justified.

In this paper, PI control with input-output linearizaiton is presented for a three-phase neural point clamped boost rectifier. The control algorithm consists of a input-output linearization inner current loop in synchronous reference frame and a PI voltage control outer-loop. There are two reference signals for this cascade controller, which are the dc link voltage reference and the q-axis current reference. They are used to regulate the dc link voltage and achieve unity power factor. A model based design method for the inner-loop and outer-loop is presented. Simulation results show the dc link control performance and the current control performance. The control performance under a distorted voltage supply condition is also shown.

Nowadays, PEM fuel cells are considered as one of the most promising electric energy production technology using hydrogen. For this reason, tracking the efficiency of the PEM fuel cell system is an important research topic. Most of the control algorithms developed to aim this goal are based on models of the PEMFC although to date there is no complete model which takes into account all the phenomenon related to the PEMFC. In this paper, we propose a control algorithm based on an experimental approach which searches for operation parameters (stack temperature, air relative humidity and air stoichiometric ratio) to optimize the efficiency of the PEMFC system. Indeed, an experimental study done beforehand showed that by acting on these parameters, the efficiency of the system which depends highly on the electric power generated by the stack, on the power lost in the auxiliaries and on the hydrogen flow rate, can be optimized. The developed algorithm is based on a local optimization method derived from the line search method. The validity of this method has been proven with different classic functions and the control algorithm has been implemented experimentally in the control interface of our PEMFC system. The experiments analysis showed promising results.

This paper presents a synchronous-frame repetitive controller for three-phase UPS inverters. The proposed control algorithm can eliminate odd-harmonic periodic distortions caused by the nonlinear and unbalanced load, and simultaneously achieve very fast transient response. Distinguished from the conventional repetitive control in the stationary frame, the proposed approach incorporates the repetitive controller into three deliberately selected synchronous frames. Resultantly, the repetitive control time delay is reduced to 1/6 of the fundamental period such that the error convergence rate and transient tracking accuracy are both significantly improved. To further enhance the steady-state performance, a high performance 4th-order linear-phase infinite-impulse-response (IIR) filter Q(z) is synthesized and incorporated into the repetitive controller. The proposed controller is implemented on the Texas Instruments fixed-point digital signal processor (TMS320LF2407) and eliminates all current sensors for cost effectiveness. Experiments have been carried out on an 18 kW three-phase UPS prototype. Low THD (<2percent) has been achieved under heavily distorted nonlinear load and unbalanced load. Fast error convergence (< one fundamental period) is demonstrated during step load transients.

This paper presents a new adaptive high speed control algorithm (AHSC) for the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. This AHSC algorithm has been built by using the Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) and with reference to the fed inverter variables limitation. The proposal control technique is mathematically formulated and implemented in the two conventional motor control strategies such as the Field Oriented Control (FOC) in one hand and the Direct Torque Control (DTC) on the other hand. The proposed AHSC is tested through computer simulation using MATLAB/Simulink, where the system efficiency and robustness is verified for a wide speed range and under the two cited drive strategies. The obtained simulations results are satisfactory and confirmed the usefulness of the overall proposed control algorithm.
