A major step in the process of designing the controllers of a distribution systems is to test the performance of the controller devices. Testing the controllers with a traditional hardware-based real-time simulator is an effective approach for validation of the controllers. However, it is very costly. This paper introduces a software-based real-time simulator, which is a simple but useful tool for evaluating the controller hardware that will eventually implement the control algorithms in the field. In the proposed structure, the distribution system is simulated in PSCAD (an offline power system simulator) and the control algorithms are implemented in a physical controller hardware. An algorithm is proposed to enforce PSCAD to run in real-time under certain conditions. Therefore, the developed interfacing structure and real-time enforcement scheme provide a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulation tool that can test the performance of controllers in a system. The proposed simulator is validated by several experimental case studies.

This paper develops a nonlinear model predictive controller for constrained attitude maneuvering of spacecraft actuated by a reaction wheel assembly. In the proposed control algorithm, a Lie group variational integrator is implemented for the prediction of discrete-time dynamics. The model predictive control problem is defined on SO(3) and converted to an optimal control problem over the prediction horizon. The numerical solver for this optimal control problem is implemented. The developed solver utilizes the Indirect Single Shooting Method to find a solution to the necessary conditions for optimality. The control constraints and exclusion zone constraints are handled using a penalty function approach. Simulation results on a spacecraft model are presented.

This work aims at developing a distributed power control algorithm for energy efficiency maximization (measured in bit/Joule) in wireless networks. Unlike most previous works, a new formulation is proposed to jointly account for the energy efficiency and communication delay while ensuring quality-of-service constraints. A non-cooperative game-theoretic approach is taken, and feasibility conditions are derived for the best-response of the game. Under the assumption that these conditions are met, it is shown that the game admits a unique Nash equilibrium, which is guaranteed to be reached by implementing the game best-response dynamics. Based on these results, a convergent power control algorithm is derived, which can be implemented in a fully decentralized fashion.

Automated material handling systems are widely used in industry due to high throughputs and good process quality. In order to fully utilize their potential, these systems have to be custom-built, requiring individually created control software. The engineering process of the control software includes extensive manual programming, because a modular structure of the control algorithm with predefined modules is often not available. We describe one such modular control algorithm, based upon a two-layer architecture that separates the hardware control from the material flow control. Our modular control algorithm allows predefined modules for both the conveyor hardware and material flow elements to be created and then assembled in the needed configuration. As a result, the control software for a custom-built material handling system can be created by arranging predefined modules and setting their parameters, thus without manual programming. The proper functionality of our control algorithm is demonstrated by a simulation example using emulated hardware.

Random Forest with Adaptive Local Template for Pedestrian Detection

Pedestrian detection with large intraclass variations is still a challenging task in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a novel pedestrian detection method based on Random Forest. Firstly, we generate a few local templates with different sizes and different locations in positive exemplars. Then, the Random Forest is built whose splitting functions are optimized by maximizing class purity of matching the local templates to the training samples, respectively. To improve the classification accuracy, we adopt a boosting-like algorithm to update the weights of the training samples in a layer-wise fashion. During detection, the trained Random Forest will vote the category when a sliding window is input. Our contributions are the splitting functions based on local template matching with adaptive size and location and iteratively weight updating method. We evaluate the proposed method on 2 well known challenging datasets: TUD pedestrians and INRIA pedestrians. The experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art or competitive performance.

In this paper, a proportionate normalized least mean square (PNLMS) based control algorithm with modified hill climbing MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) technique is used to control the switching of a voltage source converter (VSC), in a grid tied solar photovoltaic (PV) system. A hardware prototype is developed for the system constituted by PV array, grid, VSC and the test results are obtained for a nonlinear load connected at PCC (Point of Common Coupling), and variable insolation levels. The obtained results show fast convergence and less steady state error. Moreover, the learning rate of the PNLMS algorithm can be easily tuned for a stable SPV system. The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of the grid current obtained is within the limits specified by IEEE-519 standard.

Scalable video coding consists in compressing the video sequence into a layered bitstream where each layer refers to different spatial, temporal or quality representation of the video. Scalability enables compression gain compared to the simulcast encoding of layers thanks to inter-layer predictions. The scalable HEVC extension (SHVC) is the latest scalable technology promising up to 30% bitrate gains under the common test conditions, defined by JCT-VC. These conditions do not consider UHD and use fixed quantization step, which is not relevant in operational environment. In this paper, we propose an innovative adaptive rate control algorithm for SHVC. We consider HD as a base layer and UHD as an enhancement layer, with a constant global bitrate and a dynamic bitrate ratio adjustment between layers. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on a UHD data set where enables on average a BD-BR gain of 4.25% compared to a fixed-ratio encoding.

This paper focuses on applying human postures and face tracking technologies to design an autonomous patrol vehicle control system, which contains a wireless video surveillance ability. The entire system includes the following several parts: (1) Obtaining the skeleton joints based on the Kinect skeleton tracking: the angles and distances between each human arm's joint are calculated to be the input of an artificial neural networks. (2) Changing the vehicle's gear box: the dynamic gesture recognition is built by using the artificial neural network and a finite state machine. (3) Controlling the vehicle speed, the speed is controlled by a fuzzy control algorithm. (4) Controlling of a motorized camera: the Kinect face tracking function is applied to detect a human's fact direction, so that, the motorized camera's rotation is controlled by the direction. This project expands the application range of intelligent mobile robots and improves the robotic autonomous ability to deal with complex environments.

Recently, a control algorithm has been presented to control the geometry of a prestressed flexible cable net formwork, which is used for the construction of anticlastic thin concrete shell structures in architecture. The most important uncertainties in the model of the cable net are the parameters of unstressed lengths of its edges. As the control algorithm is model-based, its performance depends on the knowledge of these parameters. We present two methods for their identification, which are based on measurements of different configurations of the tensioned cable net. The first identification method uses a change of variables and a linear least squares approach. The second one is based on an optimization problem, which is solved in a distributed way by the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and is robust against the expected measurement noise. A numerical example demonstrates the performance of the identification methods.

This paper introduces architectural and interaction patterns for integrating crowdsourced human contributions directly into user interfaces. We focus on writing and editing, complex endeavors that span many levels of conceptual and pragmatic activity. Authoring tools offer help with pragmatics, but for higher-level help, writers commonly turn to other people. We thus present Soylent, a word processing interface that enables writers to call on Mechanical Turk workers to shorten, proofread, and otherwise edit parts of their documents on demand. To improve worker quality, we introduce the Find-Fix-Verify crowd programming pattern, which splits tasks into a series of generation and review stages. Evaluation studies demonstrate the feasibility of crowdsourced editing and investigate questions of reliability, cost, wait time, and work time for edits.
