A typical single course on dynamics and control is limited in the coverage that can be given to either topic. At Rensselaer, we have had separate one-semester courses on dynamic systems ( process dynamics) and process control for a number of years. In this article, we discuss how MATLAB and SIMULINK are used to aid student learning in the two courses. A discussion of the topics covered and the educational delivery methods used is provided. During the past few years them has been a major increase in the publication of books and papers concerned with computer applications in stratigraphy. Many computer programs also have been published. This review concentrates on selected significant developments in lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy. The paper describes the use of computer applications on education for industrial robotic systems. Robotics evolved as a central issue in teaching for scientific and engineering courses and inherently encompasses a spectrum of sciences and technologies and qualification levels. However, most current teaching approaches, related to robotics, concentrate on individual aspects or small student groups and do not involve dangerous situations. With a mixed-reality robotics teaching, a true interdisciplinary setup can be reached, this approach has been used in a robotics course at higher education, to prepare students for future activities in industry and also in research. This active learning experience approach in the field of Industrial Robotics was implemented in a Master degree on Electrical Engineering.

The term "intelligent compaction" is now heard so often one might believe that the method used for documenting and controlling the quality of hot-mix asphalt pavement has evolved to a state of total commercial and engineering acceptance. In fact, today's most-used process for determining the density of an asphalt mat uses 1960's technology. Now, however, the responsibility for quality control (QC) of the paving and compaction process has largely been given to the contractor. This shift in responsibility comes at a time when the construction industry as a whole is faced with the worst labor shortage in history, limiting the number of qualified QC technicians and equipment operators. Recently, researchers introduced a patented system that, when mounted on a vibratory asphalt compactor, can render an asphalt density reading (in pounds per cubic foot) every 1 s in real time. This paper briefly describes the system and details the essential contributions made by computer hardware and software to a successful onboard asphalt density measuring system.

Although computer methods now are used routinely in some parts of paleontology, in others they are seen as unnecessary or even irrelevant. There is no balanced spread of computer applications throughout paleontology as a whole. applications in the late 1980s tended to be rather conventional, but a few were distinctly innovative. The most significant probably were the developments in theoretical morphology, especially as automatic techniques for gathering morphometric data were being developed to provide real-world data for comparison. Also significant was the application to paleontology of some of the techniques of computer-intensive statistical inference. These may allow statistical tests to be developed for paleontological hypotheses that were previously untestable.

Three application areas for fiber optics in computers have been reviewed, spanning performance from Mb/s to Gb/s. For Local Area Networks, fiber optics is not currently a cost-effective solution for most applications. As user interfaces become more graphics oriented and interactive software is developed, bandwidth demand is expected to increase, and fiber technology may become the wiring technology with the best flexibility and growth potential. For mainframe I/O-channel networks, fiber technology can solve existing limitations to computer center wiring. Fiber-optics technology is currently cost-effective for this application. Multiprocessor/Shared Memory networks are applications which could push fiber links to their performance limits.
