Temperature is one of the most important factors that affect the performance of power electronics systems. It is important that thermal management is considered initially at the design stage of the systems. Because of its advantages of being low cost, high accuracy, and adaptable, computer simulation based analysis and design techniques have become important tools for power electronics designers. This paper presents the state of the art design and analysis techniques that are used for power electronics components and systems design. The focus is on the review of the existing computer based simulation of electro-thermal design solution techniques. Methodologies of electro-thermal modelling of power electronics systems such as converters are explored, their advantages and disadvantages of them are discussed and the benefits of computer based simulation over the existing methodologies are highlighted.

simulation is a very important tool which has been used for several years in several fields (with computer and non computer systems). Given its importance, simulation has been used as soon as possible during a system's design phase. This paradigm is called "simulation-based Design" or SBD. Using SBD aims at eliminating unfit designs as early as possible before significant resources have been consumed. It is the process in which simulation is the primary means of evaluation and verification. In this paper, we give an overview about related works. We classify the related work in three classes: simulation to design non computer systems in several domains, simulation to design software and simulation to design Multi-Agent Systems, Self-Organizing Systems or Systems with Emergent Functionality. Data-driven Shared Steering Control Design for Lane Keeping

In this paper, we propose a shared steering control strategy for semi-autonomous vehicles by taking into account the interaction between the driver and his/her vehicle. The copilot controller cooperates with the driver and help maintain the vehicle in the central position of a lane. Taking advantage of the small-gain theory, the design procedure does not rely on the perfect knowledge of the model and states for the driver. An adaptive dynamic programming method is introduced to develop a shared controller in real-time using online measurable input-output data from vehicle sensors. The efficacy of the proposed shared steering controller is demonstrated by computer-based simulations. © 2018

Teaching Sorting and Searching Algorithms through simulation-based Learning Objects in an Introductory Programming Course

In this paper we present our experience in the development and use of interactive simulation-based Learning Objects (LOs) in an introductory course of programming. The focus of our research is on the teaching of one of the important topics in introductory courses of programming - Sorting algorithms and their programming implementation. The characteristics of the LOs developed and the scenarios used for their deployment are described. The results from the pilot study, discussed in the paper, demonstrate an increase of student interest and a level of understanding of the learning content.

A simulation based supply partner selection decision support tool for service provision in Dell

Partner selection is an important aspect of all outsourcing processes. Traditional partner selection typically involves steps to determine the criteria for outsourcing, followed by a qualification of potential suppliers and concluding with a final selection of partner(s). Reverse auctions (RAs) have widely been used for partner selection in recent times. However, RAs, although proven successful in initial price reduction strategies for product and service provision, can suffer from reduced effectiveness as the number of executions increases. This paper illustrates Dell's experience of such diminishing returns for its outsourced after sales product repair service and presents the development of a new partner selection methodology, which incorporates a new process improvement stage to be executed in combination with the final selection phase. This new methodology is underpinned by the development of a computer based simulation supply partner selection decision support tool for service provision. The paper highlights the significant additional cost saving benefits and improvement in service achievable through the use of advanced simulation based decision supports. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Often students in undergraduate courses in programming have some problems with the transition from concrete to abstract thinking and the understanding of basic concepts of algorithms and programming. In this paper we present our experience in the development and use of interactive simulation-based learning objects (LOs) in an introductory course of programming. The pilot study showed that LOs helped the student to understand easier learning content and increased the students' motivation regarding the course “Introduction to Programming”.

The scientific understanding of atmospheric processes has been rooted in the mechanical and physical view of nature ever since dynamic meteorology gained ground in the late 19th century. Conceiving the atmosphere as a giant 'air mass circulation engine' entails applying hydro- and thermodynamical theory to the subject in order to describe the atmosphere's behaviour on small scales. But when it comes to forecasting, it turns out that this view is far too complex to be computed. The limitation of analytical methods precludes an exact solution, forcing scientists to make use of numerical simulation. However, simulation introduces two prerequisites to meteorology: First, the partitioning of the theoretical view into two parts the large-scale behaviour of the atmosphere, and the effects of smaller-scale processes on this large-scale behaviour, so-called parametrizations;and second, the dependency on computational power in order to achieve a higher resolution. The history of today's atmospheric circulation modelling can be reconstructed as the attempt to improve the handling of these basic constraints. It can be further seen as the old schism between theory and application under new circumstances, which triggers a new discussion about the question of how processes may be conceived in atmospheric modelling. Web-based virtual patients in dentistry: factors influencing the use of cases in the Web-SP system

We studied the students' acceptance and utilization of virtual patients (VPs) authored by faculty using the Web-SP system over two consecutive years. We also studied factors of importance for the utilization of VPs for self-assessment. Both year-groups studied found the Web-SP system easy to use and their overall opinion of Web-SP was positive (Median: 5, p25-p75: 4-5). They found the VPs engaging, realistic, fun to use, instructive and relevant to their course. Students used, on average, 9.68 VPs per course, which constitutes 43 percent of the available VPs. The number of VPs available seemed to be sufficient for the target course, even if some of the students preferred a higher number of VPs. Of the VPs encountered, 71% (CI: 68-75%) were VPs with feedback, and correspondingly 29% of the VPs chosen were without feedback. The difference in utilization between both types of VPs was significant, at p < 0.001. Thus, the students clearly favoured VPs with feedback compared to VPs without feedback. There were three modes of engagement in which the VP was utilized. Mode 1 was the preferred mode for VPs without feedback, while mode 3 was dominant for VPs with feedback.. Whether or not a VP was selected for review during a teacher led seminar or not, did not affect student behaviour, at least on the surface. Teacher led seminars may still be of importance to provide credibility to the VPs by integrating them into the curriculum.

By using the real information of the intended bonding surface and considering the effect of the diffusion distance in a definite time, a new theoretical model for diffusion bonding was proposed. The model, reflecting the characteristic of real bonding process effectively, realizes the visualization and simulation of the bonding process in which many voids disappear dynamically. The results show that the simulation is close to those experimental results from the phenomena of voids closure.
