In the preliminary design of a propulsive shafting system, the additional (vibratory) stress due to torsional vibration is one of the important factors that must be considered in addition to the mean stress induced by the steady torque. In this paper, existing information concerning shaft design is reviewed; procedures formerly performed by slide rule, diagrams, and tabulations are formulated; and, based on the induced formulas, computer programs are developed. For an engine either two cycle or four cycle, single cylinder or multicylinder, and for a shafting system either undamped or damped (inner or outer or both inner and outer), it is required only to change the input data to obtain the desired data for various order numbers of torsional vibrations due to various firing orders of the cylinders. The output data include the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the torsional vibrations, the amplitudes of twisting angles, and the vibratory stresses of the shafts. The reliability of the induced formulas and the developed computer programs has been confirmed by agreement between the computer output and existing information.

Numerical approach for MHD Al2O3-water nanofluid transportation inside a permeable medium using innovative computer method

Innovative numerical approach was employed to demonstrate nanofluid MHD flow through a porous enclosure. To model porous medium, Darcy law has been employed. Radiation impact was included in energy equation. The new method (CVFEM) has been employed due to complex shape of porous cavity. Aluminium oxide with different shapes was dispersed in to water. Viscosity of nanofluid changes with Brownian motion impacts. Roles of radiation, buoyancy and Hartmann number on treatment of alumina were displayed. Results prove that convection detracts with augment of magnetic forces. Radiation can reduce the temperature gradient. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Assignment of protein disulphides by a computer method using mass spectrometric data

We designed a computer program for the assignment of protein disulphides using mass spectrometric data. All the theoretical linear peptides containing from one to three cysteines are generated on the basis of the protein sequence. Their combination ways are determined in order to create all the possible disulphide-bridged fragments containing from two to six cysteines and to calculate their molecular weight. One, two and three S-S bridges per linked fragment mere considered, taking into account the possibility that the fragments contain unabridged residues, The mass data obtained from the spectral analysis of peptide mixtures of the digested protein are then associated to the fitting structures of disulphide-bridged peptides, giving rise to the primary output, This output can then be screened by using information on the specificity of the proteolytic agent(s) used and/or any further mass data provided by Edman degradation and/or carboxypeptidase treatment of the peptide mixtures. The need for such a computer aid is discussed and examples of application are given.

A simple method for computer quantification of stage REM eye movement potentials

We describe a simple method for computer quantification of eye movement (EM) potentials during REM sleep. This method can be applied by investigators using either period-amplitude (PA) or Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectral EEG analysis without special hardware or computer programming. It provides good correlations with visual ratings of EM in baseline sleep and after administration of GABAergic hypnotics. We present baseline data for both PA and FFT measures for 16 normal subjects. studied for 5 consecutive nights. Both visually rated and computer-measured EM density (EMD) showed high night-to-night correlations across baseline and drug nights and the computer measures detected the EMD suppression that is produced by GABAergic drugs. Measurement of EM in addition to stage REM provides biologically significant information and application of this simple computer method. which does not require pattern recognition algorithms or special hardware. could provide reliable data that can be compared across laboratories.

Given a basic pseudo-random number generator which returns uniformly distributed samplesU from the interval (0, 1) and a statistical distribution as defined by its distribution functionF(x). Then the inversion methodX←F−1(U) produces samples fromF(x). A procedure is developed which prepares “guide tables” in order to facilitate this inversion so that sampling becomes efficient for arbitraryF(x).For discrete distributions these tables are small and easy to set up, and the resulting sampling algorithm compares well with known general methods. Continuous distributions require longer set-up times and more space for tables. These are prepared using given probability densitiesf(x). The method can cope with “reasonable”f(x) including most cases which are commonly encountered in statistics. The reported computational experience, on Poisson, Normal, Gamma and Cauchy distributions, indicates that our general routine is almost as fast as the best known sampling algorithms which were specially designed for these distributions.

A non-destructive method for estimating above-ground forest biomass in threatened woodlands

Current techniques for calculation of biomass in agroforestry require felling of many trees. Such methods are not well suited to the natural environment, especially if the environment is subject to anthropic degradation and if the wood supply to local populations is at stake. The method we describe here was used in a socioeconomic and ecological study of the biomass of a thuriferous juniper woodland (Juniperus thurifera L.) in the High Central Atlas mountains (Morocco). This computerized method reconstructs the different component volumes of a tree from two orthogonal-view photographs. Then, using the volume and the density of each component, it estimates the biomass of the tree. Regression curves were established between dendrometric parameters for 102 trees (tree height x crown projection area) and their estimated biomass by this computer method. A second-order polynomial equation gave the best regressions with a high coefficient of determination (R-2 = 0.96). To validate the method, the biomass of seven trees (cut in a previous study) was compared with those obtained from our regression equations, while in a second study, the biomass of three trees, estimated from photographs using the computer program, was compared with values obtained after felling and weighing the same trees. The results show that the method is reliable with a mean error percentage varying between 2.5 and 7.5 per tree. For young trees, the accuracy of the biomass could be improved, for example, by using a tree morphology classification. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDITY OF A computerIZED method FOR DIAGNOSES OF FUNCTIONAL PSYCHOSES (DIAX) - EVALUATION BASED ON COMPARISON WITH CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS, PROGNOSIS, STABILITY, AND FAMILY HISTORY

Comparison of the results of studies within psychiatry are often complicated by the uncertainty of whether the different authors use the same diagnostic criteria for the probands in the studies. In the 'International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia' (IPSS) (WHO), patients with functional psychoses from the nine participating centres were examined with standardized instruments. This study is based on data collected during the initial examination and a 2 year follow up of patients included in the IPSS. The aim was to develop and test a method based on symptoms which diagnosed the patients in a standardized way. A computer programme using 39 symptom groups was developed, (DIAX). (A manual is included in the Appendix). In order to evaluate the diagnoses arrived at by DIAX, comparison was made with clinical diagnoses at initial examination and at follow up. For the total of 1202 patients from nine countries, the overall agreement was 73%. The comparison also showed interesting similarities and differences among the centres. The validity of the method was supported by the following three analyses. The stability (diagnoses based on initial examination and follow up examination) was high. 'Severe' disagreement was only about 10%. The prognosis of the two major diagnostic groups showed a significant difference. An examination of mental illness in the families showed that DIAX diagnoses could separate two groups, those with mainly schizophrenia in the family and those with mainly affective psychoses in the family. Other results emerging from the study and the advantages and limitations of the method are discussed.
