Since computer numerical control machine tool is composed of multiple meta-action units to achieve one specific function, including the meta-action units' own quality, it still needs to control the coupling relationships among different meta-action units' quality characteristics to guarantee the whole machine's quality. In this article, a method of quality characteristic decoupling planning based on meta-action unit for computer numerical control machine tool was proposed. Firstly, the coupling constraint models based on meta-action unit were established. Secondly, the comprehensive coupling strengths of meta-action units were calculated and introduced into the design structure matrices. Thirdly, multidisciplinary design optimization method was adopted to obtain the optimized control sequence of different meta-action units' quality characteristics. What is more, automatic pallet changer rotary motion of computer numerical control machine tool was taken as an example to illustrate the rightness and effectiveness of this method.

Hybrid optimization algorithm for thermal displacement compensation of computer numerical control machine tool using regression analysis and fuzzy inference

During the machining process, the computer numerical control machine is susceptible to variations in ambient temperature, cutting heat, and friction within the transmission parts, which generate different heat sources. These heat sources affect the machine structure in different ways, causing deformation of the machine and displacement of the tooltip and workpiece position, ultimately resulting in deviations in machining accuracy. The amount of thermal drift depends on several factors, including the material of the machine components, the cutting conditions, the duration of the machining process, and the environment. This study proposes a hybrid optimization algorithm to optimize the thermal variables of computer numerical control machine tool spindles. The proposed approach combines regression analysis and fuzzy inference to model the thermal behavior of the spindle. Spindle speed and 16 temperature measurement points distributed on the machine are input factors, while the spindle's axial thermal error is considered an output factor. This study develops a regression equation for each speed to account for the different temperature rise slopes and spindle thermal variations at different speeds. The experimental results show that the hybrid thermal displacement compensation framework proposed in this study effectively reduces the thermal displacement error caused by spindle temperature variation. Furthermore, the study finds that the model can be adapted to significant variations in environmental conditions by limiting the machining speed range, which significantly reduces the amount of data needed for model adaptation and shortens the adaptation time of the thermal displacement compensation model. As a result, this framework can indirectly improve product yield. The effects observed in this study are remarkable.

As everyone knows, assembly quality plays a very important role in final product quality. Since computer numerical control machine tool is a large system with complicated structure and function, and there are complex association relationships among quality characteristics in assembly process, then it is difficult and inaccurate to analyze the whole computer numerical control machine tool quality characteristic association at one time. In this article, meta-action assembly unit is proposed as the basic analysis unit, of which quality characteristic association is studied to guarantee the whole computer numerical control machine tool assembly quality. First, based on Function-Motion-Action decomposition structure, the definitions of meta-action and meta-action assembly unit are introduced. Second, manufacturing process association and meta-action assembly unit quality characteristic association are discussed. Third, after understanding the definitions of information entropy and relative entropy, the concrete meta-action assembly unit quality characteristic association analysis steps based on relative entropy are described in detail. And finally, the lifting piston translation assembly unit of automatic pallet changer is taken as an example, the association degree between internal leakage and the influence factors of part quality characteristics and mate-relationships among them are calculated to figure out the most influential factors, showing the correctness and feasibility of this method.

An integrated multidisciplinary design optimization method for computer numerical control machine tool development

computer numerical control machine tool is a typical complex product related with multidisciplinary fields, complex structure, and high-performance requirements. It is difficult to identify the overall optimal solution of the machine tool structure for their multiple objectives. A new integrated multidisciplinary design optimization method is then proposed by using a Latin hypercube sampling, a Kriging approximate model, and a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Design space and parametric model are built by choosing appropriate design variables and their value ranges. Samples in design space are generated by optimal Latin hypercube method, and design variable contributions for design performance are discussed for aiding the designer's judgments. The Kriging model is built by using polynomial approximation according to the response outputs of these samples. The multidisciplinary design model is established based on three optimization objectives, that is, setting mass, optimum deformation, and first-order natural frequency, and two constraints, that is, second-order natural frequency and third-order natural frequency. The optimal solution is identified by using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. The proposed method is applied in a multidisciplinary optimization case study for a typical computer numerical control machine tool. In the optimal solution, the mass decreases by 3.35% and the first-order natural frequency increases by 4.34% in contrast to the original solution.

Comprehensive measurement model of geometric errors for three linear axes of computer numerical control machine tools

The geometric error measurement of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools is developing towards automation and high precision. This not only improves the measurement efficiency, but also reduces the error caused by the long measurement time. This paper proposes a high-efficiency, automatic method of measuring 21 geometric errors of the three linear axes of CNC machine tools and establishes a comprehensive measurement model. The measurement system and model are applicable to linear axis geometric error measurement for all CNC machine tools. The measurement model was developed using rigid body kinematics theory and combined with the ray-tracing method. It mainly analyses the error crosstalk, system errors caused by optical components, laser beam drift, and non-parallelism errors between the measuring beams. ZEMAX was used to verify the model accuracy. Further, repeatability and comparison experiments were conducted to confirm the reliability and accuracy of the measurement system and model.

Faults frequently occur in the rotary axis of machine tools due to their complicated drive mechanism. The machining accuracy and life time span will decline when there is a fault in the machine tool. Hence, it is necessary to develop a method to detect faults efficiently. In this article, a fault diagnosis method of the rotary axis of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool based on servo motor current analysis is proposed. A two-degree-of-freedom dynamic model of worm and worm gear is used in this study to analyse the relationship between the current signal and the fault of the rotary axis of the CNC machine tool. The ensemble empirical mode decomposition method is used as a self-adaptive low-pass filter to extract valuable information from the current signal. A number of experiments are carried out on a CNC machine tool which is in a fault state to validate the presented method. The result shows that the current of the servo motor contains enough information to detect the fault state of the feed axis of the machine tool. After being calculated by the dynamic model, the current signal clearly reveals the fluctuation of stiffness of the teeth which is caused by the fault of the rotary axis.

A generalized approach for the acceleration and deceleration of industrial robots and CNC machine tools

Many techniques for the acceleration and deceleration of industrial robots and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools have been proposed in order to make industrial robots and CNC: machine tools perform given tasks efficiently. Although the techniques selecting polynomial functions can generate various acceleration and deceleration characteristics, the major problem is the computational load. The digital convolution techniques are more efficient than the techniques selecting polynomial functions. However, neither velocity profiles of which the deceleration characteristics is independent from the acceleration characteristics nor those of which the acceleration interval is different from the deceleration interval can be generated by the digital convolution techniques. This paper proposes a generalized approach for generating velocity profiles that cannot be generated by the digital convolution techniques. According to the desired characteristics of acceleration and deceleration, each set of coefficients is calculated and is stored. Given a moving distance, and acceleration and deceleration intervals, a velocity profile having the desired characteristics of acceleration and deceleration can be efficiently generated by using these coefficients. Several velocity profiles generated by the proposed technique will be applied to one single-axis control system.
