Collaborative problem solving and groupware for software development

When a group is working together toward a common goal, communication and collaboration are key. This is especially true in software development where a project of any significance involves groups of people. Collaborative problem-solving techniques and groupware technology can be a boon to software development because they enhance communication and cooperation. This article examines how software development is affected by collaborative problem solving and decision making, groupware theory and tools, and group cognition and psychology. It also analyzes collaboration tools and their correlation to problem solving and group characteristics.

In multiphase study conducted from 2000 to 2002, the authors examined the relationships between Internet-speed software development practices and agile and traditional development principles, and compared the two sets of principles. They found some overlap between traditional software development principles and agile principles but also some important differences.

Is all communication created equal?: An investigation into the effects of communication mode on perceived information quality

Enhancing communication between functions is crucial to successful product development and management. Previous work in the product innovation management literature has made two implicit assumptions. First, that increasing the frequency of information dissemination from one function to the other always improves the perceived quality of the information received. The second assumption is that all types of interfunctional communication carry equal weight in the decision-making process of the target of that communication. The current study develops a typology of communication modes, which suggests a rationale for why these assumptions may not be true. The empirical findings of the study, based on a survey of 504 nonmarketing managers indicate that the relationship between? total contribution frequency and perceived information quality (PIQ) is nonlinear. Specifically, the study finds that marketing managers can either communicate too little or too much with nonmarketing managers. If they interact too infrequently, they run the risk of not understanding the way to most effectively communicate market information. If they communicate too much, they may overload the manager with too much information and erode the overall quality of the information sent. In addition, some modes of communication are more effective ill improving perceptions of the quality of market information, For instance, re gular e-mail sent by marketing managers seems to have no effect on perceived information quality. On the other hand, e-mail sent,with supporting documentation can have ct strong positive effect on perceived information quality. Impromptu phone calls by marketing have less positive effects than scheduled phone calls. Interestingly, too much of the wrong types of communication actually, seem to reduce perceptions of perceived information quality, and consequently the likelihood that market information will be used. UML 2001: A standardization odyssey

The article presents information on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) in 2001. As the UML reaches the ripe age of four, both its proponents and its critics are scanning the recent changes in the UML 1.3 revision. In a relatively short period of time the UML has emerged as the software industry's dominant modeling UML is not only a de facto modeling language standard, it is fast becoming a de jure standard. Nearly two years ago the Object management Group (OMG) adopted UML as its standard modeling language. As an approved Publicly Available Specification (PAS) submitter to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the OMG is proposing the UML specification for international standardization. This article explores how the UML is faring in the international standardization process. It assumes the reader is generally familiar with the use of UML, and instead focuses on the language's recent and future evolution. The processes and architectures for UML change management are examined, followed by discussion of how these processes and architectures were used in the recent minor revision of the language (UML 1.3), and how they may be applied in the next major revision (UML 2.0), which is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2001. Factors contributing to the success of the UML will be assessed here, followed by speculation on its future.

Don't underestimate the problems of user centredness in software development projects - There are many!

On the basis of a longitudinal field study of 29 commercial software development projects, the pros and cons of user centredness in software development were analysed. We looked at two concepts: user participation-an organizational device-involving a user representative in the team, and user orientation-a cognitive-emotional concept-which pertains to positive attitudes towards users. Both were found to be associated with project difficulties relating to process and product quality as well as overall project success. We suggest that the issue is no longer whether or not to involve users, but instead to develop a realistic understanding of the difficulties associated with user centredness.

Planning and knowledge about strategies: Their relationship to work characteristics in software design

This paper describes an empirical study of software design processes in which both cognitive (i.e. planning the work process, knowledge about strategies) and organizational (i.e. work characteristics) factors were examined. Thirty-five software designers with an average professional experience of 6.6 years worked on a software design task in a laboratory setting. Thinking-aloud protocols were analysed, and additional interview and questionnaire data were gathered. It was found that software designers do very little explicit planning but have a broad knowledge of useful strategies. Results of regression analyses indicated that the amount of explicit planning and knowledge of strategies is predicted by the amount of design work to accomplish, communication and cooperation requirements, and control at work.

A Qualitative Approach to Automatic Data Quality Judgment

As the integration of information systems enables greater accessibility to multiple data sources, the issue of data quality becomes increasingly important. In general, data quality is determined by several factors, or quality parameters, which are often not independent of each other. As a consequence, it is often necessary to represent, and reason with, domain-specific knowledge about the relationships among quality parameters, if insightful judgments about the overall quality of data are to be made. This article presents a formulation of the data-quality judgment problem that is amenable to a 'knowledge-based' approach, where a data consumer can input such domain-specific knowledge and then rely on an automated system to deduce information about overall data quality. A primary feature of this work is the notion of a data quality calculus. The data quality calculus is a data quality judgment framework based on a 'census of needs,' and provides a framework for deriving an overall data quality value from a collection of local relationships among quality parameters. By specifying new, or alternate, local relationships, individual data consumers can tailor the framework to reflect individual requirements. This customizability has the potential to be useful when various pieces of data come from different sources, some of which may be unfamiliar. Based on the calculus, it is possible to implement a data quality reasoner system that is capable of assisting data consumers in judging data quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study of the impact of knowledge engineering on software engineering. Software engineering is an established discipline that has accumulated and codified more than two decades worth of know-how. Knowledge engineering, on the other hand, is an emerging discipline with lots of issues but, at least so far, little structure. Despite its lack of maturity the practice of knowledge engineering promises to have a noticeable impact on software engineering doctrine. The experimental nature of knowledge engineering goes hand-in-hand with a style of software development best characterized as exploratory, which has not been much studied in traditional software engineering. The vast literature on software engineering discusses, almost exclusively, the production and maintenance of software as an industrial process, predictable in its outcome, repeatable in its execution, and portable in its independence on particular individuals. Many conditions must be met for the managerial and technical processes advocated in software engineering to work.

AN ENTITY-LIFE MODELING APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF CONCURRENT SOFTWARE

The article presents an entity-life modeling approach to the design of concurrent computer software. The growing importance of real-time and embedded software systems has generated considerable interest in language and methods support for such systems. Since it is often appropriate to use concurrent software to deal with real-time events, modern languages such as Ada provide concurrent tasks as programming constructs. Task decomposition based on entity-life modeling reduces a concurrent problem to a set of sequential sub-problems that can be addressed with conventional analysis and design techniques. With the entity-life modeling approach, task decomposition becomes the first and most important aspect of system structuring. Task decomposition is addressed only when a data flow through functional 'transforms' has been designed, and consists of combining transforms into tasks. While entity-life modeling leads naturally to implementations with concurrent tasks, the approach is also applicable in other environments. The Jackson Structured Development (JSD) is a method for system development. The method is most widely used for the development of data processing applications. This makes JSD potentially useful for real-time systems and embedded applications.
