Motion vector re. nement in a Wyner-Ziv to H.264 transcoder for mobile telephony

The authors develop a decoder/encoder system (transcoder) to solve the consumption constraint in the communications between end-user devices, when a new Wyner-Ziv (WZ)/H.264 framework is defined for being used in mobile-to-mobile environments. This approach is based on leaving to the devices only WZ video encoding and traditional video decoding;the lowest complexity algorithms in both paradigms. The system shifts the burden of complexity to the network, where an improved transcoder that reuses information between both paradigms is allocated. The WZ decoding motion vectors are used to reduce the H. 264 motion estimation process. The proposed transcoder offers a complexity reduction up to 60% on average, without any rate distortion drop.

Rate-driven key frame selection using temporal variation of visual content

A simple and fast method to select the assigned number of key frames in a video shot is presented. The algorithm selects the key frames so that the temporal variation of visual content within a video shot is equally distributed to each hey frame. Simulation results on a real video sequence are in agreement with the human visual perception.

Adaptive template matching algorithm based on SWAD for robust target tracking

The sum of absolute differences (SAD) is widely used in video coding and disparity computation for its simplicity. However, SAD is not very common in tracking applications owing to issues like partial occlusion and target changes, which can dramatically affect its performance. Presented is a novel adaptive template matching algorithm for target tracking, based on a sum of weighted absolute differences (SWAD). The target template is updated using an infinite impulse response filter, while a weighting kernel is adopted to reduce the effects of partial occlusion. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed tracker outperforms conventional SAD in terms of efficiency and accuracy, and its performance is comparable with more complex trackers, such as the mean shift algorithm.

An algorithm for watermark insertion and extraction on the vector image, such as map data, is presented. Most parts of the vector image, such as map data, consist of the array of the coordinate values. At first, the image is partitioned into blocks with the same area and every vertex coordinate value within a block is changed to a new coordinate value with an origin at the south-west vertex of the mask belonging to the associated block. According to the value of watermark, the insertion area is different. Unlike the work by Sakamoto et al, it should be possible to use a square mask of arbitrary size. The mask of the Sakamoto et al.'s, work is specific since the length of the mask is 2(R) - 1 where R = 1, 2,...., n. It is also shown that the proposed method is superior to the previous work against noise attack.

Local bi-directional funnel network for salient object detection

Existing deep-learning-based saliency detection methods mainly design a sophisticated architecture to integrate multi-level convolutional features, for example, recurrent network or bi-directional message passing model, and achieve gratifying performance. However, the direct transmission of information with large span, for example, the information from the deepest layer and the shallowest layer, may lead to antagonistic problems. To address this problem, we propose a local bi-directional funnel network (LBDFN) to effectively integrate multi-level features for salient object detection. In the proposed local bi-directional funnel network, a local bi-directional feature integration (LBDFI) module is designed to fuse the features with similar properties from adjacent convolution layers, which can solve the problem of mismatch between fusion features well. The extensive experiments on five saliency detection datasets clearly demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Edge detection by spiral phase contrast imaging at terahertz frequencies

This paper proposes the spiral phase contrast (SPC) imaging at terahertz (THz) frequencies to achieve the target edge detection. The THz SPC imaging is built based on a classical 4f imaging system, and a spiral phase plate is placed in the Fourier plane to generate the spiral phase. Owing to the unique nature of the spiral phase, edge detection can be achieved. The THz SPC imaging mechanism is analysed by the scalar diffraction theory, and its corresponding analytic expression is derived. A circle target is simulated and the resultant image shows a remarkable edge detection. A proof-of-principle experiment is carried out using our designed THz SPC imaging system and the effectiveness of target edge extraction on the THz images is validated. A circle same as the simulation is imaged firstly, which is consistent with the simulated result. And the letter "Z" with more edges is imaged later. All edges in experiments are extracted perfectly, which are extremely consistent with the THz SPC imaging theory.

Presented is a method for calculating occupancy maps with a set of calibrated and synchronised cameras. In particular, Dempster-Shafer based fusion of the ground occupancies computed from each view is proposed. The method yields very accurate occupancy detection results and in terms of concentration of the occupancy evidence around ground truth person positions it outperforms the state-of-the- art probabilistic occupancy map method and fusion by summing.

Dynamic optimization of hessian determinant image pyramid for memory-efficient and high performance keypoint detection in SURF

With increasing demand for scale-invariant and fast object recognition, speeded up robust features (SURF) have emerged and become a widely used feature extraction algorithm in computer vision. Nevertheless, SURF still requires high memory usage and heavy computations caused by the keypoint detection procedure that produces huge image pyramid composed of many hessian determinant (HD) data for supporting the scale-invariance. Therefore, in this paper, dynamic optimization schemes of the HD image pyramid are proposed for completely removing the redundancies of the keypoint detection with keeping the original functionality of SURF without any loss. The proposed approach has shown to reduce memory usage by 45-51%, the execution time by 37-50% and the power consumption by 18-42% when compared with the keypoint detection in the original SURF algorithm.
