Optimal illumination for three-image photometric stereo using sensitivity analysis

The optimal placement of the illumination for three-image photometric stereo acquisition of smooth and rough surface textures with respect to camera noise is derived and verified experimentally. The sensitivities of the scaled surface normal elements are derived and used to provide expressions for the noise variances. An overall figure of merit is developed by considering the image-based rendering (i.e. relighting) of Lambertian surfaces. This metric is optimised numerically with respect to the illumination angles. An orthogonal configuration was found to be optimal. With regard to constant slant, the optimal separation between the tilt angles of successive illumination vectors was found to be 120 degrees. The optimal slant angle was found to be 90 degrees for smooth surface textures and 55 degrees for rough surface textures.

In the present infrared target detection system, simultaneously achieving both the target detection performance, as well as, computing efficiency is considered as a big task. To, address the above said issue, a non-convex triple tensor factorisation is incorporated into the existing infrared patch tensor model in the proposed work. In the proposed model (triple tensor factorisation-infrared patch tensor), local prior information using linear structure tensor and corner strength is incorporated so that the strong clutters in the background can be easily suppressed and the target can be detected correctly. Finally, the method proposed, was solved by alternating direction method of the multiplier. Large number of experiments were conducted and the results presented in the experiments suggest that the method proposed has shown good performance for background suppression, as well as, for the target detection in the clutter environment, when compared with the other baseline methods.

The performance of a low bit-rate digital image codec based on a product vector quantiser (VQ) is examined in a noisy transmission channel environment. The VQ codec is a separating gain/shape type providing good data compression at about 1.25 bits per pixel. For small image subblock sizes, there is sufficient interblock correlation in the mean, standard deviation and shape information to facilitate crude error detection mechanisms to be implemented. We reinforce these error detection capabilities with a subblock boundary continuity testing algorithm. Erroneous subblocks are then estimated by extrapolating intensity contours from neighbouring subblocks. Using such an error detection and correction technique, noisy recovered VQ images can be considerably improved. At a bit error rate of 0.01, we obtained an improvement in the normalised mean square error of about 0.013, or equivalently about 6 dB in signal-to-noise ratio.

Novelty detection using extreme value statistics

Extreme value theory is a branch of statistics that concerns the distribution of data of unusually low or high value, i.e. in the tails of some distribution. These extremal points are important in many applications as they represent the outlying regions of normal events against which we may wish to define abnormal events. In the context of density modelling, novelty detection or radial-basis function systems, points that lie outside of the range of expected extreme values may be flagged as outliers. There has been interest in the area of novelty detection, but decisions as to whether a point is an outlier or not tend to be made on the basis of exceeding some (heuristic) threshold. It is shown that a more principled approach may be taken using extreme value statistics.

The dark channel prior (DCP) algorithm has been widely used in the field of image defogging because of its simple theory and clear restoration result. However, the DCP algorithm has significant limitations. This study clarifies the relationship between halo artfacts and the size of the dark channel patch of the DCP algorithm and analyses the reason why the colour of close-range white objects appears distorted in the restored images. An amended DCP method is then proposed to solve these problems, utilising a locally variable weighted 4-directional L-1 regularisation and a corresponding parallel algorithm to optimise the transmission. A deep neural network, 4DL(1)R-net, is then trained to further enhance the processing speed. Extensive experiments demonstrate that this method is effective. The proposed method can obtain clear details, maintain the natural clarity of images, and achieve significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods.

Texture-based image segmentation using neutrosophic clustering

This study presents an effective segmentation method which is based on neutrosophic clustering with the integration of texture features for images. The proposed method transforms the image into the neutrosophic domain and then extracts the texture features using analogies of human preattentive texture discrimination mechanisms. Finally, the neutrosophic clustering is employed to segment the images. This method can handle the indeterminacy of pixels to have strong clusters and to perform segmentation effectively with the noisy images. Experiments are performed with various types of natural and medical images to exhibit the performance of proposed segmentation method. The evaluation of proposed method has been done with other segmentation methods to measure its performance which shows its robustness for noisy and textured images.

No-reference image quality assessment based on multiscale feature representation

The no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) method can evaluate the distortions in an image without the reference image. However, due to the diversity of the image contents and distortion types, it is hard for the existing NR-IQA algorithms to obtain competitive performance on both synthetically and authentically distorted images. To address the problem, a multiscale feature representation-based NR-IQA method that performs well for both synthetic and authentic distortions is proposed. This model consists of two parts: The feature extraction part and the feature fusion part. First, part of the Res2Net-50 network is chosen as the feature extraction part due to its high ability in increasing the range of receptive fields. Then, the feature fusion part consisting of a novel residual block and two fully connected layers is designed to fuse the extracted features and realize the quality score mapping. After a series of stepwise optimization experiments, the most competitive network architecture consisting of the feature extraction part and the feature fusion part is obtained. Comprehensive experiments on the LIVE, TID2013, CSIQ, KADID-10k, KonIQ-10K, and LIVE challenge databases demonstrate that the proposed method can work powerfully on both the synthetic and authentic distortions and also has a strong generalization ability.

Rotation invariant classification of rough surfaces

Rotation of a rough, textured surface will not produce a simple rotation of the image texture. It follows that where image texture is a function of surface topography, existing rotation invariant texture classification algorithms are not robust to surface rotation. The effect of surface rotation on the observed image is analysed using an existing theory, a novel scheme to stabilise classification accuracy is proposed and evaluated. The scheme uses photometric stereo to estimate the surface derivatives, which are then used as the input to a classifier. Simulations indicate that, where the level of image noise is moderate or low, the approach is successful in maintaining classification accuracy. Furthermore, in some circumstances, the extra information used by the algorithm allows classification accuracy superior to that based on one image alone, even without rotation.

Multi-human tracking from sparse detection responses

In this study, the authors focus on the performance improvements of multi-human tracking from sparse detection responses. Many previous detection-based data association tracking methods used dense detection responses as input, but they did not take into account in the case of sparse detection responses. Dense detection responses are difficult to obtain in complex environments all the time. In order to achieve this goal, they propose a particle-filter-based triple threshold method to build reliable trajectories. Here, they apply topic model to represent human appearance. The appearance of each person can be considered as topic distribution. Then a cost function algorithm is used to associate these trajectories in a time sliding window for final tracking results. The cost function is composed of four parts: appearance cost, motion direction cost, object size cost and distance cost. These four parts are integrated into a unified formula to build this cost function. Finally, they use three challenging datasets to evaluate the performance of the author's approach in the case of dense and sparse detection responses, respectively, and compare with state-of-the-art approaches. The results show that their approach can obtain better tracking performance than that of previous methods in both cases.

An optimized knight traversal technique to detect multiple faults and Module Sequence Graph based reconfiguration of microfluidic biochip

Conventional biomedical analysers are replaced by digital microfluidic biochips and they are adequate to integrate different biomedical functions, essential for diverse bioassay operations. From the last decade, microfluidic biochips are getting plenty of acceptances in the field of miscellaneous healthcare sectors like DNA analysis, drug discovery and clinical diagnosis. These devices are also bearing a vital role in the area of safety critical applications such as food safety testing, air quality monitoring etc. As these devices are used in safety critical applications, clinical diagnosis and real-time biomolecular assay operations, these must have properties like precision, reliability and robustness. To accept it for discriminating purposes, the microfluidic device must endorse its preciseness and strength by following sublime testing strategy. Here, an optimized droplet traversal technique is proposed to investigate the multiple defective electrodes of a digital microfluidic biochip by embedding boundary cum row traversal and KNIGHT traversal procedure (based on the famous Knight Tour Problem). The proposed approach also enumerates the traversal time for a fault-free biochip. In addition to identifying the faulty electrodes, a Module Sequencing Graph based reconfiguration technique is proposed here to reinstate the device for normal bioassay operation.
