Quantisation step selection schemes in JPEG2000

Modified quantisation step selection schemes for the uniform dead-zone scalar quantisation as used in Part I of the JPEG2000 standard are presented. Effects of these quantisation schemes on the lossy compression performance of 5/3 integer wavelet transforms are evaluated. The experiment is carried Out in the JPEG2000 framework. Similar consideration may be applied to the real wavelet transforms for lossy image compression.

A new method of retrieving images from large image databases is proposed. The method is based on vector quantisation (VQ) of local texture information extracted by a Gabor wavelet filter bank at interest points automatically detected in an image. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a trademark image database and compared with the performance of some existing methods.

A fast algorithm to detect motion in the compressed domain for video surveillance is presented. The algorithm partially decompresses the video bit stream and performs motion detection from its quantised discrete cosine transform coefficients, Its very low computational cost makes this algorithm very useful when real-time motion detection has to be performed simultaneously in several video bit streams.

Adaptive image normalisation based on block processing for enhancement of fingerprint image

Improved algorithms for enhancement of fingerprint images, which have the adaptive normalisation based on block processing, in the automatic fingerprint verification system, are proposed. To obtain an enhanced fingerprint image, first an input image is partitioned into sub-blocks with the size of K x L and the region of interest of the fingerprint image is acquired. The parameters for the image normalisation are then adaptively determined according to the statistics of each block. Utilising these parameters, the block image is normalised for the next process. The proposed algorithms are tested with the NIST fingerprint images and verified to have superb performance.

Data scheduling scheme for power reduction in DWT-based image coders

A new memory data scheduling scheme is used for designing a two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform (2D-DWT) core for ASIC implementation. This scheme reduces by 20 to 30% the overall switching activity in the 2D-DWT core and hence leads to lower power consumption at the expense of a slight reduction in the quality of reconstructed images and a slight increase in the chip area. This scheme is particularly useful in applications such as wireless Internet and laptop computers, in which picture quality can be traded-off for reduced power consumption.

A descriptor, based on histogram central moments, is proposed for picking up only the nonuniform from a series of subimages resulting from the multiresolution analysis of a texture image. This subimage choice speeds up a procedure laid out for texture segmentation of the image while maintaining or even improving the reliability of it.
