Driving distraction detection based on gaze activity

Driving distraction detection can effectively prevent the occurrence of traffic accidents. Thus, monitoring a driver's state is very important for road safety. At present, most driving distraction detection methods focus on singular aspects, such as gaze distraction or hand distraction, and rarely focus on cognitive distraction as it is difficult to detect. This study proposed a driving distraction detection method based on gaze activity. A multi-channel convolutional neural network was used to classify the driver's gaze area and calculate the gaze activity. In cognitive distraction, the driver's gaze activity is significantly lower than that in the normal driving state. The activity thresholds via experiments have been obtained and used to determine whether drivers were in a cognitively distracted state. Through experiments, the accuracy of this method reached 92.36%. To identify driving distractions more comprehensively, a gaze distraction algorithm based on the two-second rule has been added to the method. The experiment demonstrated that our method in combination with this algorithm improved all of the indicators (when compared to only the gaze activity algorithm), and the accuracy rate increased to 95%.

Corner classification using Harris algorithm

An efficient corner type classification method derived from the general Harris corner detector is presented. The key idea is using the property that the gradient magnitudes of two isophotes in a second-order corner are the same but those in higher-order corners are different. A computational framework for post corner type classification led by the general Harris corner detector is devised. It can be implemented with a few additional computations.

Factorisation for subclass of symmetric-antisymmetric multifilter banks and its application to image coding

A complete and minimal factorisation is proposed for an important subclass of symmetric-antisymmetric multiwavelet filter banks (SAMFBs). Based on this factorisation, optimal SAMFBs are designed for image coding under an optimisation criterion. Experimental results show that the SAMFBs significantly outperform the traditional 9-7 wavelet in terms of coding efficiency, especially for hard-to-compress images.

SCALE BASED ALGORITHM FOR RECOGNITION OF BLURRED PLANAR OBJECTS

The paper presents an algorithm based on scale-space analysis, for the recognition of blurred planar objects. Apart from satisfying the usual requirements for invariance under translation, rotation and scaling, the algorithm is also invariant under blurring, that is, across all levels of detail or scales. The technique makes use of the spatial coincidence of the infiexion points on the object contour at all scales, and of the fact that no new such points are created as the object becomes more blurred. The algorithm therefore searches for the best match of these points at a single scale in the scale-space image. The algorithm was implemented on an IBM/AT in Modula-2 programming language, and was tested out on a group of 20 geographical maps of different sizes and at varying distances from the camera. A recognition rate of 95 to 100% and an average recognition time of 2.5 seconds were obtained by an efficient organisation of the template dictionary.

Effective algorithm for rolled fingerprint construction

Fingerprinting is important for automated personal authentication. Rolled fingerprints can provide much more information for recognition than plain-touch fingerprint captured by a live-scanner. An effective algorithm of real-time rolled fingerprint construction via a live-scanner is proposed, which behaved better than both inked fingerprint acquisition and other construction algorithms.

Robust active contours based on local threshold preprocessing fitting energies for fast segmentation of inhomogenous images

This letter presents a robust active contour model driven by the local threshold preprocessing fitting energies to actualize fast segmentation of inhomogenous images. First, the local threshold preprocessing is carried out to compute two local intensity means. Second, these two means are sorted and serve as the local area fitting centres, which makes the contour move along the internal or external target boundaries. Finally, the above local area fitting centres are used to build the model's energy functional based on the symmetric cross entropy. Experimental results of the real inhomogenous images confirm that the presented model can segment inhomogenous images much faster and is robust to the setting up of the original contour.

Still image compression based on 2D discrete wavelet transform

The objective of this Letter is to develop new techniques for enhancing the compression of still images. The features of the proposed algorithm include: (i) zero mapping, which exploits the inherent self-similarity of wavelet coefficients at different scales, (ii) adaptive scanning, and (iii) data packing. Our algorithm outperforms both JPEG and the embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) algorithm.

Blocking artefact reduction using projections onto the overcomplete basis

The authors propose a novel post-processing technique, which reduces blocking artefacts by restoring the surface continuity of images disturbed during the compression process. The proposed technique reduces blocking artefacts by representing a blocky image by a linear combination of continuous functions with directional property. The simulation results show that the proposed technique provides good subjective, as well as objective, qualities.

Analysis of feasibility and advantages of multi-source image registration using regional features

Automatic registration of multi-source remote sensing data is a challenging task due to the high non-linearity of radiometric differences among various data. Feature extraction is a key enabling technique in registration algorithm design. In this letter, we prove the feasibility of using extracted regional features for multi-source image registration. In particular, regional features can be extracted through pixel-level image classification, and existing off-the-shelf algorithms can be directly adopted. Experiment results demonstrate the robustness of the regional-feature-based registration method.
