Planar shape recognition based on hidden Markov models

A new deformed shape recognition method based on hidden Markov models (HMMs), which is very resistant against transformations and non-rigid deformations, is presented. Since shape features are not referred to an absolute point, the method is also resistant to severe shape distortions. The method has been successfully tested using different databases.

Restore DeepFakes video frames via identifying individual motion styles

Recent advance on highly realistic AI-synthesised video approaches makes it hard to distinguish whether a speaker in video is real. Many existing DeepFakes detection approaches can be invalidated by using them as supervision in adversarial training, which in turn improves the performance of DeepFakes. This makes the problem a dilemma. However, human can recognise the identity of familiar persons by observing their motion styles. Inspired by this, the paper proposes a novel method to recognise original speaker's identity clues in DeepFakes videos by learning individual motion styles. As a biological signature, motion styles can neither be used in the training process of DeepFakes nor be modified to deceive detection methods without reducing realistic performance. Also, this paper proposes a novel pipeline to continuously restore the original frames from DeepFakes videos without knowing the DeepFakes approach in advance. Based on above ideas, our scheme makes it possible to restore DeepFakes videos. Through training the cross-modal transfer module, the appearance embedding can be inferred from the identity code. Extensive experiments are conducted to reveal the effectiveness of the method, it shows for the first time that the original persons can be identified automatically and the original video from DeepFakes videos can be generated.

Signal-dependent wavelet transform and application to lossless image compression

A signal-dependent wavelet transform based on the lifting scheme is proposed. The transform can be made reversible (i.e. an integer-to-integer transform). The reversible transform. followed by arithmetic coding, is applied to lossless image compression. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method is superior to the S + P method.

An efficient block-based coding scheme for noisy images is proposed. Unlike a conventional encoder where pre-filtering, discrete cosine transforms (DCT), quantisation, and variable length coding (VLC) are cascaded, the proposed image coder has only a modified DCT and a VLC, and performs pre-filtering and quantisation simultaneously in the modified DCT operation.

Motion based object tracking with mobile camera

An efficient algorithm which detects and tracks a moving object is proposed. The global motion energy caused by camera movement is eliminated by finding the maximal matching position with the cross-correlation value between two consecutive frames using the spiral scanning technique. The region of a moving object is segmented exactly by combining the results of the temporal derivatives and edge map from one image, and the actual centroid of the moving object is determined as the mid-point of the cumulative distribution of the projection profile of the region.

Segment attention-guided part-aligned network for person re-identification

Part misalignment of the human body caused by complex variations in viewpoint and pose poses a fundamental challenge to person re-identification. This letter examines Res2Net as the backbone network to extract multi-scale appearance features. At the same time, it uses the human parsing model to extract part features, which can be used as an attention stream to guide part features re-calibration from the spatial dimension. Additionally, in order to ensure the diversity of features, SAG-PAN effectively integrates the global appearance features of person image with part fine-grained features. The experimental results on the Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and CUHK03 datasets show that the proposed SAG-PAN achieved superior performance against the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Region coding using improved B-spline surface approximation

A new arbitrary region coding algorithm using a B-spline surface is presented. Pixels in the coded region are regarded as valid image data, and the parameters of the B-spline surface are calculated under certain optimisation criteria. Instead of the traditional least squares error (LSE) criterion, a least squares weighted error (LSWE) criterion is used as the approximation criterion. Simulation results show that the LSWE approach is much better for region coding than the LSE approach.
