Different approaches have been used in order to represent and build control engineering concepts for the computer. Software applications for these fields are becoming more and more demanding each day, and new representation schemas are continuously being developed. This paper describes a study of the use of knowledge models represented in ontologies for building computeraidedcontrolsystems design (CACSD) tools. The use of this approach allows the construction of formal conceptual structures that can be stated independently of any software application and be used in many different ones. In order to show the advantages of this approach, an ontology and an application have been built for the domain of design of lead/lag controllers with the root locus method, presenting the results and benefits found.

The design of a hardware accelerator for supporting CACSD computations is considered in relation to H∞ design. The key algorithms are identified and parallel solutions formulated. The speedup of these techniques is then assessed with respect to trial implementations on a network of transputers.

Most conventional design processes produce documentation as a by-product: design is done within an environment or collection of tools and the design outputs, models, diagrams, results, etc are gathered together along with commentary (usually with hindsight) into some kind of document at the end of the process. Inspired by ideas taken from literate programming and notebook interfaces to design tools, a prototype document centred design document has been developed. In such an environment, the document is the main product and the design is a by-product of documenting the design. By implementing the framework components of the system in Java and by using the extended markup language (XML) to encode the contents of the documents, the system is made platform neutral and therefore portable. An example document centred environment for computer-aided control system design (CACSD), that integrates Matlab and Simulink with the document-based framework, is briefly described and indications for future possibilities for this technology are given.

The focus of this paper is to investigate different control structures(single-loop PI control) for a dividing wall(Petlyuk) column for separating ethanol, n-propanol and n-butanol. Four control structures are studied. All the results are simulations based on Aspen Plus. control structure 1(CS1) is stabilizing control structure with only temperature controllers. CS2, CS3 and CS4, containing also composition controllers, are introduced to reduce the steady state composition deviations. CS2 adds a distillate composition controller(CCDB) on top of CS1. CS3 is much more complicated with three temperature-composition cascade controllers and in addition a selector to the reboiler duty to control the maximum controller output of light impurity composition control in side stream and bottom impurity control in the prefractionator. CS4 adds another high selector to control the light impurity in the sidestream. Surprisingly, when considering the dynamic and even steady state performance of the proposed control structures, CS1 proves to be the best control structure to handle feed disturbances inserted into the three-product Petlyuk column.

This contribution describes a LabVIEW-based interactive computer-aided control system design tool. Although it does not provide the flexibility of common low-level design tools, it offers a set of comfortable, ready-to-use solutions for plant identification, loop-shaping or LQR/LQG-controller design and controller implementation. The tool integrates into industrial plant control and enables engineers to efficiently do the controlsystemdesign from plant identification to controller implementation on the same platform. The user interface with convenient system editors and analysis tools facilitates the user to interactively attain the design goals. If desired, a configurable wizard leads the user through the design process. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The adoption of a structured development methodology, based on a design cycle and on formal reference models, is a key issue to manage, possibly in a step-by-step fashion, the design of industrial control and supervision systems, as there are in modern robotic applications. In the present work, a development technique is illustrated, which extends some of the most relevant solutions and methods used to effectively deal with the design of complex controlsystems and integrates them into a structured methodology with analysis and simulation facilities. The main discriminating features of the presented framework are: the object-oriented approach, compliance with international standards for control software specification, hybrid dynamic models and automatic code generation. The development and implementation of a robot mission for a six degree-of-freedom manipulator is illustrated to highlight the benefits and advantages of the proposed methodology.

In this paper, we present an improved algorithm to compute the minimal null-space basis of polynomial matrices, a problem which has many applications in control and systems theory. This algorithm takes advantage of the block Toeplitz structure of the Sylvester matrix associated with the polynomial matrix. The analysis of algorithmic complexity and numerical stability shows that the algorithm is reliable and can be considered as an efficient alternative to the well-known pencil (state-space) algorithms found in the literature. Flexcontrol is presented in this paper as a CAE (computer-aided-Engineering) platform for designing real-time fuzzy controlsystems: Capable of integrating all the four phases for the design, namely, tuning, simulation, prototyping and field testing, Flexcontrol allows the whole design process to be cycled easily and efficiently, thus considerably speeding up the controlsystemdesign and prototyping. Its hardware architecture and software development are detailed. Its usage is described, along with two illustrative examples.
