An integrated approach to process modelling on the basis of knowledge and experience from process engineers is suggested. This approach is designed in such a way that its implementation into an interactive computer program can be applied by process experts who usually have little or no experience in process modelling. 'Integrated' refers firstly to the idea to combine different types of process models into a single process modelling approach and secondly to the envisaged openness of the implementation towards existing computeraidedcontrolsystemdesign (CACSD) environments with respect to data and information exchange.

In this paper we present the MATLAB gateway compiler, a tool to automatically create a gateway function for any FORTRAN routine to be used in MATLAB. We illustrate the power of this tool by showing how speed and accuracy can considerably be improved when interfacing FORTRAN routines of the software library SLICOT. Currently a similar tool is under development for the Matrix-X package

The paper deals with the case studies concerning the problems of dynamic optimization. It introduces the following examples: problem with free time and fixed end point, problem with fixed time and free end point, and problem with fixed time and fixed end point. It shows the construction of the models in Matlab&Simulink and Dynopt toolbox, and their solution and verification of the results.

A general purpose computeraidedcontrolsystemdesign package called SIMART has been developed from the available control theory. Equipped with sound real-time and simulation capabilities, it is intended to serve as a control engineering framework as well as a learning basis for advanced control techniques. An advanced control approach which, starting from a specification-compatible identified model, performs design through shaping of the usual sensitivity functions, has been established. Simple and effective guidelines for learners may be obtained, provided that the quest for a universal design method is abandoned in favor of a more realistic case-specific approach, using plant characteristics, such as oscillatory behavior or actuator limitations, to orientate design choices. Two case studies are reported at the end of the paper.

GAMMA-1PC is a computer-aided control system design (CACSD) tools for controllers algorithms synthesis of multivariable plants by engineers-developers of controlsystem. It does not require a knowledge of synthesis process: user points out a type of his problem (directive number) and enters, after computer request, an initial data: differential equations of plant, disturbance boundaries, tolerances on steadystate errors etc. A problem solution is performed automatically. The tools for modernization and an increase of directive quantity by a researcher are proposed. They contain the languages for building of directive user interface and directive software tools for calculation. Using GAMMA-1PC new solution of gyroplatform controller synthesis problem is derived.

The article deals with an educational concept in the field of experimental flight systems and applied flight control. Within the scope of a university teaching position at the Technical University of Berlin, the author provides students with theoretical information and practical experiences in flight control and flight-testing. The students come from different branches of aeronautical education and have very different previous knowledge. Within two semesters the students learn in the lectures about particular aspects of theoretical and applied flight control, aircraft dynamics, man/machine systems, real-time simulation, flight-testing, software engineering concepts, etc. In laboratory courses the students work with a modern computer based simulation and controlsystemdesign tool. They learn how to analyze dynamic systems and how they can be influenced by feedforward and feedback controllers. In the last part of the second semester the designed controllers are implemented in the fly by wire system of DLRs flying test-bed ATTAS (Advanced Technologies Testing Aircraft system). The flight-tests are performed by DLR test pilots. After the two semesters the students have to write a report including all theoretical results and flight-test data evaluations and they have to pass an oral examination.

designing a controller usually involves several iterations between the synthesis based on a set of parameters, the analysis of the robustness and performance obtained so far, and correction of the design parameters. An approach based on computer-aideddesign is proposed, where the engineer manipulates the graphics with a mouse, sees immediately how the performance changes, and feels how the different objectives are linked. The instantaneous performance display enables understanding the problem better and obtaining a satisfactory compromise. Applications to research and education are described.

design and integration of multi-agent systems are becoming more and more important since there is evidence of a shift of multi-agent application deployment from academic or lab testing areas to real world applications such as manufacturing, aerospace, logistics, and networking. Therefore, utilization of an environment that guides the development process starting from the design of templates that can be reused multiple times up to the code generation and debugging is essential. In this paper we present advancements in the Agent Development Environment that can be used not only for the development of agents designed for high-level decision-making, but also for distributed low-level control that is automatically integrated.

WCBSL is a Windows Convolution-Based Simulation Language for time-domain analysis and design of linear feedback systems based on convolution algebra The theoretical basis is outlined and the language and methodology are illustrated. Characteristic patterns and vectors are defined and the effect of delay is considered-Dynamic criteria for choosing between decentralized and multivariable control are illustrated using the model of an industrial air compressor.

Generalized predictive control, in its linear and analytical version, is a general-purpose technique that has been successfully applied to various classes of plants. However, when we move from stable and well-damped plants to plants with more complex dynamics (unstable, oscillatory), choosing the appropriate GPC parameters may become difficult. This paper introduces a case study which involves a rotary flexible joint, i.e. a system with an integrator and a stable lightly-damped mode, and shows that is indeed possible to tune quickly and effectively a GPC controller. This goal is achieved through a methodology based on the use of the usual sensitivity functions as closed-loop performance indicators, on a simplified choice of the observer polynomial and on plant-oriented design guidelines. The proposed methodology finds an adequate support in SIMART, a CACSD package for advanced control.
