The NASA Artemis campaign will return humans to the Moon. This time, with the help of commercial and international partners, the campaign's objective is a permanent Moon base. The Moon base infrastructure, including an orbiting station and surface assets, will be developed for astronauts to stay for the long haul to learn to live and work on another planet in preparation for an eventual humans-to-Mars mission. As the roundtrip communication delays increase in deep space exploration, the crew will need more onboard systems autonomy and functionality to maintain and control the vehicle or habitat. These mission constraints will change the current Earth-based spacecraft to ground control support approach that will demand safer, more efficient, and more effective computer-human interface (CHI) control. For Artemis, CHI is defined as the elements that the crew interfaces with: audio, imagery, lighting, displays, and crew controls subsystems. Understanding how CHI will need to evolve to support deep space missions will be critical for the Artemis campaign -especially crew controls, which is the focus of this paper. How does NASA ensure crew controls are reliable enough to control complex systems and prevent a catastrophic event due to human error-especially when the astronauts could be physiologically and/or psychologically impaired? NASA's approach to mitigating catastrophic hazards in human spaceflight system development such as crew controls, is through a holistic system engineering and human System Integration (HSI) methodology. This approach focuses on incorporating NASA's human-Rating Requirements to ensure consideration of human performance characteristics to control and safely recover the crew from hazardous situations. This paper discusses, at a high level, CHI for the Artemis campaign. Multi-user interface for co-located real-time work with digital mock-up: a way to foster collaboration?

Nowadays more and more industrial design activities adopt the strategy of Concurrent Engineering (CE), which changes the way to carry out all the activities along the product's lifecycle from sequential to parallel. Various experts of different activities produce technical data using domain-specific software. To augment the interoperability among the technical data, a Digital Mock-Up (DMU), or a Building Information Model (BIM) in architectural engineering can be used. Through an appropriate computer-human interface (CHI), each expert has his/her own point-of-view (POV) of a specific representation of DMU's technical data according to an involved domain. When multiple experts work collaboratively in the same place and at the same time, the number of CHIs is also multiplied by the number of experts. Instead of multiple CHIs, therefore, a unique CHI should be developed to support the multiview and multi-interaction collaborative works. Our contributions in this paper are (a) a concept of a CHI system with multi-view and multi-interaction of DMU for multiple users in collaborative design;(b) a state of the art of multi-view and multi-interaction metaphors;(c) an experiment to evaluate a collaborative application using multi-view CHI. The experimental results indicate that, in multi-view CHI working condition, users are more efficient than in the other two working conditions (multiple CHIs and split view CHI). Moreover, in multi-view CHI working condition, the user, who is helping the other, takes less mutual awareness of where the other collaborator works than the other two working conditions.

The arising technology eye tracking has been blooming not only in the medical field but also in the field of computer science. There are various usages of eye tracking that range from human study, over usability of design, up to controller input of computer interfaces to information security. In this paper, the application of the real-time gaze-base technique eye tracking is introduced with the presented usages. A comprehensive summary shows the progress of this innovative technology. Finally, the challenges and potential directions of this uprising tool are being discussed.

The use of timeline to visualize time-series data is one of the most intuitive and commonly used methods, and is used for widely-used applications such as stock market data visualization, and tracking of poll data of election candidates over time. While useful, these timeline visualizations are lacking in contextual information of events which are related or cause changes in the data. We have developed a system that enhances timeline visualization with display of relevant news events and their corresponding images, so that users can not only see the changes in the data, but also understand the reasons behind the changes. We have also conducted a user study to test the effectiveness of our ideas.

We present MTVis, a multi-touch interactive tree visualization system. The multi-touch interface display hardware is built using the LED-LP technology, and the tree layout is based on RINGS, but enhanced with multi-touch interactions. We describe the features of the system, and how the multi-touch interface enhances the user's experience in exploring the tree data structure. In particular, the multi-touch interface allows the user to simultaneously control two child nodes of the root, and rotate them so that some nodes are magnified, while preserving the layout of the tree. We also describe the other meaninful touch screen gestures the users can use to intuitively explore the tree.

This article is concerned with enhancing agent coordination in modern sociotechnological systems. To this end, sociotechnological systems are conceptualized as problem solving systems that comprise human and technological agents engaged in dynamic collaboration. Following this, there is a discussion of the challenge of achieving agent coordination in problem solving systems as technological agents become increasingly autonomous. A key assertion is that agent coordination in problem solving systems might be enhanced through the study of competent coordination in living systems such as human and animal groups. Based on a review of research on competent coordination in human and animal groups, design principles for problem solving systems are then presented. Finally, methods are proposed for measuring the extent to which a given agent operates in accordance with these principles. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: Healthy use of display screen equipment (DSE) has been one of the major concerns of workers at the workplace. This study aimed to identify the significant predictors of musculoskeletal discomforts among female sedentary workers. Methods: A total of 67 female workers whose jobs required the use of a computer for more than 2 hours per day participated in an interview. This was followed by anthropometric measurements of the workers and their workstations. Results: Mouse-elbow height match was a significant predictor for discomfort of the lower back, whilst keyboard-elbow height match was a significant predictor for discomfort of the shoulders and upper back. Psychosocial status and accumulative DSE usage of subjects were also significant factors for discomfort. Workstation-worker match attributed most significantly to workers' discomfort. Conclusion: The study results further support the multifactorial nature of the relationships between musculoskeletal discomfort, workstation set-up and the psychosocial aspects of work. They also shed light on the parameters that might be important for risk assessment of computer use in the workplace.

CT-Integrated Robot for Interventional Procedures: Preliminary Experiment and computer-human interfaces

Pre-operative planning and intra-operative computer interfaces for minimally invasive interventions were investigated with an active robot integrated with a CT scanner. To test the robotic system, a biopsy study was performed using a pig. For pre-operative planning, a virtual needle was superimposed on axial slices and multiplanar reformatted views in correlation with the interventional field. The path of the virtual needle was sent to the robot's controller, and the robot's needle gripper moved into a position congruent with the planned path. Intra-operative controls were then used to drive the needle while keeping the interventionalist's hands out of the direct X-ray beam during CT fluoroscopy. After needle insertion, the imaged and virtual needles were shown to be sufficiently congruent.

Designing automation for human use: empirical studies and quantitative models

An emerging knowledge base of human performance research can provide guidelines for designing automation that can be used effectively by human operators of complex systems. Which functions should be automated and to what extent in a given system? A model for types and levels of automation that provides a framework and an objective basis for making such choices is described. The human performance consequences of particular types and levels of automation constitute primary evaluative criteria for automation design when using the model. Four human performance areas are considered-mental workload, situation awareness, complacency and skill degradation. Secondary evaluative criteria include such factors as automation reliability, the risks of decision/action consequences and the ease of systems integration. In addition to this qualitative approach, quantitative models can inform design. Several computational and formal models of human interaction with automation that have been proposed by various researchers are reviewed. An important future research need is the integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Application of these models provides an objective basis for designing automation for effective human use.
