A deep learning and radiomics based Alberta stroke program early CT score method on CTA to evaluate acute ischemic stroke

BACKGROUND: Alberta stroke program early CT score (ASPECTS) is a semi-quantitative evaluation method used to evaluate early ischemic changes in patients with acute ischemic stroke, which can guide physicians in treatment decisions and prognostic judgments. OBJECTIVE: We propose a method combining deep learning and radiomics to alleviate the problem of large inter-observer variance in ASPECTS faced by physicians and assist them to improve the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the ASPECTS. methodS: Our study used a brain region segmentation method based on an improved encoding-decoding network. Through the deep convolutional neural network, 10 regions defined for ASPECTS will be obtained. Then, we used Pyradiomics to extract features associated with cerebral infarction and select those significantly associated with stroke to train machine learning classifiers to determine the presence of cerebral infarction in each scored brain region. RESULTS: The experimental results showthat the Dice coefficient for brain region segmentation reaches 0.79. Three radioactive features are selected to identify cerebral infarction in brain regions, and the 5-fold cross-validation experiment proves that these 3 features are reliable. The classifier trained based on 3 features reaches prediction performance of AUC= 0.95. Moreover, the intraclass correlation coefficient of ASPECTS between those obtained by the automated ASPECTS method and physicians is 0.86 (95% confidence interval, 0.56-0.96). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates advantages of using a deep learning network to replace the traditional template registration for brain region segmentation, which can determine the shape and location of each brain region more precisely. In addition, a new brain region classifier based on radiomics features has potential to assist physicians in clinical stroke detection and improve the consistency of ASPECTS.

The aim of this study is to develop a novel computer-aided method for the prediction of the deflection of reinforced concrete beams (DRCB) under concentrated loads. To this end, in the present work, a Levenberg-Marquardt-based backpropagation novel neural network model, optimized by the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), called WOA-LMBPNN, has been developed. Specifically, a neural network, using the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm with multiple hidden layers, was optimized by the WOA, aiming to obtain higher accuracy in predicting DRCB. For the training of the models, 120 experiments with the geometrical and mechanical properties of concrete beams were compiled using were used as the input parameters. Seven datasets with different number of input variables were investigated to evaluate the effect of the input variables on DRCB. For comparison purposes, another swarm optimization algorithm (i.e., particle swarm optimization-PSO) was also used to optimize the LMBPNN model (i.e., PSO-LMBPNN model). The results obtained by the PSO-LMBPNN and WOA-LMBPNN models are then compared based on the different datasets. Finally, the results revealed the effective role of the WOA, as well as the efficiency and robustness of the new hybrid WOA-LMBPNN model in predicting DRCB.

This paper introduces a computer -aided approach for evaluating the stability of rotary cranes. Utilizing the Motion add -in within the SolidWorks package, a comprehensive numerical stability analysis was carried out. The interaction dynamics between the crane's support system and the ground were modeled employing linear springs, while the rope system was characterized by a blend of linear spring and damper elements. The term "temporary loss of stability"was introduced to describe scenarios wherein one support loses contact with the ground. Furthermore, ramifications of overlapping control signals on crane operational safety were investigated. Validation of the numerical findings was accomplished through experimental tests conducted on an actual crane. This integrated methodology not only enhances the understanding of crane stability but also offers practical insights for optimizing crane operations in real -world settings.

An Automatic on Top Analysis of Single Scan Tracks to Evaluate the Laser Powder Bed Fusion Building Parameters

The production of dense samples produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is mainly determined by the choice of the best combination of construction parameters. Parameter optimization is the first step in the definition of an LPBF process for new alloys or systems. With this goal, much research uses the single scan track (SST) approach for a preliminary parameter screening. This study investigates the definition of a computer-aided method by using an automatic on top analysis for the characterization of SSTs, with the aim of finding ranges of laser power and scan speed values for massive production. An innovative algorithm was implemented to discard non-continuous scans and to measure the SSTs quality using three regularity indexes. Only open source software were used to fine tune this approach. The obtained results on Al4Cu and AlSi10Mg realized with two different commercial systems suggest that it is possible to use this method to easily narrow the process parameter window that allows the production of dense samples.

From 1 to N: A computer-aided case study of thermodynamic cycle construction based on thermodynamic process combination

Thermodynamic cycles are essential for utilization of energy in most situations. The development of methods that can be used to construct thermodynamic cycles has therefore been the focus of engineers and scientists for some time. The essence of most traditional construction methods is to improve the classical thermodynamic cycles rather than constructing a new cycle. Few researchers have attempted to construct cycles with thermodynamic processes as basic elements. In this study, the thermodynamic process is considered as the degree of freedom in thermodynamic cycle construction for the first time, and a computer-aided method for constructing thermodynamic cycles is proposed based on this viewpoint. This method constructs a thermodynamic cycle by combining a specific number of thermodynamic processes under the guidance of predefined rules. Case studies show that this method can generate numerous forms of thermodynamic cycles, including existing classical cycles and new cycles. Thirty-eight new cycles that were generated using this method demonstracted efficiencies higher than 0.25, which is 16.67% lower than the efficiency of the Carnot cycle under the same conditions. This shows that this method is an efficient means of constructing thermodynamic cycles. The method also provides a new perspective on the construction of the thermodynamic cycle, facilitating the transition from empirical methods to data-dependent methods for thermodynamic cycle construction. Transmitted wavefront testing with large dynamic range based on computer-aided deflectometry

The transmitted wavefront testing technique is demanded for the performance evaluation of transmission optics and transparent glass, in which the achievable dynamic range is a key issue. A computer-aided deflectometric testing method with fringe projection is proposed for the accurate testing of transmitted wavefronts with a large dynamic range. Ray tracing of the modeled testing system is carried out to achieve the virtual `null' testing of transmitted wavefront aberrations. The ray aberration is obtained from the ray tracing result and measured slope, with which the test wavefront aberration can be reconstructed. To eliminate testing system modeling errors, a system geometry calibration based on computer-aided reverse optimization is applied to realize accurate testing. Both numerical simulation and experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and high accuracy of the proposed testing method. The proposed testing method can achieve a large dynamic range compared with the interferometric method, providing a simple, low-cost and accurate way for the testing of transmitted wavefronts from various kinds of optics and a large amount of industrial transmission elements.

Quantitative CT analysis of honeycombing area in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: Correlations with pulmonary function tests

Objectives: The 2011 official statement of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) mentions that the extent of honeycombing and the worsening of fibrosis on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in IPF are associated with the increased risk of mortality. However, there are few reports about the quantitative computed tomography (CT) analysis of honeycombing area. In this study, we first proposed a computer-aided method for quantitative CT analysis of honeycombing area in patients with IPF. We then evaluated the correlations between honeycombing area measured by the proposed method with that estimated by radiologists or with parameters of PFTs. Materials and methods: Chest HRCTs and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) of 36 IPF patients, who were diagnosed using HRCT alone, were retrospectively evaluated. Two thoracic radiologists independently estimated the honeycombing area as Identified Area (IA) and the percentage of honeycombing area to total lung area as Percent Area (PA) on 3 axial CT slices for each patient. We also developed a computer-aided method to measure the honeycombing area on CT images of those patients. The total honeycombing area as CT honeycombing area (HA) and the percentage of honeycombing area to total lung area as CT %honeycombing area (%HA) were derived from the computer-aided method for each patient. Results: HA derived from three CT slices was significantly correlated with IA (rho = 0.65 for Radiologist 1 and rho = 0.68 for Radiologist 2). %HA derived from three CT slices was also significantly correlated with PA (rho = 0.68 for Radiologist 1 and rho = 0.70 for Radiologist 2). HA and %HA derived from all CT slices were significantly correlated with FVC (%pred.), DLCO (%pred.), and the composite physiologic index (CPI) (HA: rho= -0.43, rho=-0.56, rho = 0.63 and %HA: rho=-0.60, rho=-0.49, rho = 0.69, respectively). Design and characterization of novel hybrid peptides from LFB15(W4,10), HP(2-20), and cecropin A based on structure parameters by computer-aided method

The increasing problem of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria requires development of new antimicrobial agents. The pivotal assets of the antimicrobial peptide include potential for rapid bactericidal activity and low propensity for resistance. The four new antimicrobial hybrid peptides were designed based on peptides LFB15 (W4,10), HP(2-20), and cecropin A according to the structure-activity relationship of the amphipathic and cationic antimicrobial peptides. Their structural parameters were accessed by bioinformatics tools, and then two hybrids with the most potential candidates were synthesized. The hybrid peptide LH28 caused an increase in antibiotic activity (MIC50 = 1.56-3.13 mu M) against given bacterial strains and did not cause obvious hemolysis of rabbit erythrocytes at concentration of 3.13 mu M with effective antimicrobial activity. The results demonstrate that evaluating the structural parameters could be useful for designing novel antimicrobial peptides.

The purpose of this study is illustrated the potential of applying the additive manufacturing (AM) technology with a low-cost three-dimensional (3D) printer on clinical applications of spine surgeries. First, the target vertebrae will be extracted from the computed tomography (CT) images of a patient and converted to a 3D polyhedral model. After choosing the target regions of pedicle screws in this 3D polyhedral model, the optimal screw angles and depths will be obtained without injuring the spinal cord. Then, a drill guide template of pedicle screws will be developed by using an AM software, and fabricated by a low-cost 3D printer. The doctor can utilize it to buckle the specific designed position of the vertebrae of the patient, and drill directly through the guide hole during the scoliosis surgery. These steps can reduce the surgical time substantially. Finally, several cases were executed to verify the placement accuracy of drill guide templates fabricated by the low-cost 3D printer.

The Kronig-Penney model consists of a periodic potential function, which is used to derive the concepts of allowed and forbidden energy bands. Here, to circumvent the tedious evolution, it is helpful to use computer methods to derive the textbook equation of the analytic Kronig-Penney model. The hierarchical methodology with the shorter symbols can effectively reduce the complication in the expression of the 4 x 4 matrix. By defining the symbol sequence, we can easily reduce terms by cancellation. With these methods and computer-aided evolution, we can derive the Kronig-Penney model from the matrix expression to the textbook form without the extremely laborious evolution.
