This paper summarizes the research effort on the development of the computer simulation models, NTVPM and RTVPM, for design evaluation of vehicles with flexible tracks and rigid link tracks, respectively. The basic features of these models have been validated using field test data. They have been successfully employed in assisting vehicle manufacturers in the development of new products and governmental agencies in the evaluation of vehicle candidates, in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. The application of the model NTVPM to the development of a new version of the infantry fighting vehicle ASCOD is presented as an example.

This study proposes and demonstrates how computer-aided methods can be used to extend qualitative data analysis by quantifying qualitative data, and then through exploration, categorization, grouping, and validation. computer-aided approaches to inquiry have gained important ground in educational research, mostly through data analytics and large data set processing. We argue that qualitative data analysis methods can also be supported and extended by computer-aided methods. In particular, we posit that computing capacities rationally applied can expand the innate human ability to recognize patterns and group qualitative information based on similarities. We propose a principled approach to using machine learning in qualitative education research based on the three interrelated elements of the assessment triangle: cognition, observation, and interpretation. Through the lens of the assessment triangle, the study presents three examples of qualitative studies in engineering education that have used computer-aided methods for visualization and grouping. The first study focuses on characterizing students' written explanations of programming code, using tile plots and hierarchical clustering with binary distances to identify the different approaches that students used to self-explain. The second study looks into students' modeling and simulation process and elicits the types of knowledge that they used in each step through a think-aloud protocol. For this purpose, we used a bubble plot and a k-means clustering algorithm. The third and final study explores engineering faculty's conceptions of teaching, using data from semi-structured interviews. We grouped these conceptions based on coding similarities, using Jaccard's similarity coefficient, and visualized them using a treemap. We conclude this manuscript by discussing some implications for engineering education qualitative research.

Terramechanics and its applications to the evaluation of terrestrial and extraterrestrial vehicle mobility: theory into practice

This paper traces the development of terramechanics - the study of the mechanics of vehicle-terrain interaction that provides the foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the behaviour of a vehicle operating on unprepared terrain. It highlights the development of computer-aided methods for performance and design evaluation of tracked and off-road wheeled vehicles, based on the principles of terramechanics. Examples of the applications of these computer-aided methods to guiding the development and design of off-road vehicles on earth, as well as the evaluation of the performance of rovers for exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond, are presented. These signify that results of research on terramechanics have been put into engineering practice in enhancing the development of terrestrial and extraterrestrial vehicles. Prospects for further development of terramechanics, as well as challenges and opportunities in the field, are reviewed.

In this perspective paper, we present challenges and opportunities that the chemical, biochemical and related industries pose to the process system engineering community to help deliver reliable and novel sustainable alternatives. More specifically, we highlight the need for a systems approach where model-based sustainable process synthesis, design, and analysis serve as opportunities to tackle the challenges. Three technology areas (interlinked to each other) that impact the sustainability of earth, namely, chemical processes linked with CO2 capture and utilization, biorefineries and water desalination are selected to highlight our views as well as the need for further development of computer-aided tools to efficiently solve the large and complex mathematical systems the problems represent. Analysis of these problems and their reported solutions indicate that opportunity exists for development of a new class of model-based methods and tools and their integration with the currently available ones to obtain the desired sustainability development goals. The determination of total burn surface area: How much difference?

Burn depth and burn size are crucial determinants for assessing patients suffering from burns [1]. Therefore, a correct evaluation of these factors is optimal for adapting the appropriate treatment in modern burn care. Burn surface assessment is subject to considerable differences among clinicians [2]. This work investigated the accuracy among experts based on conventional surface estimation methods (e.g. "Rule of Palm", "Rule of Nines" or "Lund-Browder Chart"). The estimation results were compared to a computer-based evaluation method. Survey data was collected during one national and one international burn conference. The poll confirmed deviations of burn depth/size estimates of up to 62% in relation to the mean value of all participants. In comparison to the computer-based method, overestimation of up to 161% was found. We suggest introducing improved methods for burn depth/size assessment in clinical routine in order to efficiently allocate and distribute the available resources for practicing burn care. The successful early diagnosis of brain tumors plays a major role in improving the treatment outcomes and thus improving patient survival. Manually evaluating the numerous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images produced routinely in the clinic is a difficult process. Thus, there is a crucial need for computer-aided methods with better accuracy for early tumor diagnosis. computer-aided brain tumor diagnosis from MRI images consists of tumor detection, segmentation, and classification processes. Over the past few years, many studies have focused on traditional or classical machine learning techniques for brain tumor diagnosis. Recently, interest has developed in using deep learning techniques for diagnosing brain tumors with better accuracy and robustness. This study presents a comprehensive review of traditional machine learning techniques and evolving deep learning techniques for brain tumor diagnosis. This review paper identifies the key achievements reflected in the performance measurement metrics of the applied algorithms in the three diagnosis processes. In addition, this study discusses the key findings and draws attention to the lessons learned as a roadmap for future research.

Multiwinner voting rules can be used to select a fixed-size committee from a larger set of candidates. We consider approval-based committee rules, which allow voters to approve or disapprove candidates. In this setting, several voting rules such as Proportional Approval Voting (PAV) and Phragmen's rules have been shown to produce committees that are proportional, in the sense that they proportionally represent voters' preferences;all of these rules are strategically manipulable by voters. On the other hand, a generalisation of Approval Voting gives a non-proportional but strategyproof voting rule. We show that there is a fundamental tradeoff between these two properties: we prove that no multiwinner voting rule can simultaneously satisfy a weak form of proportionality (a weakening of justified representation) and a weak form of strategyproofness. Our impossibility is obtained using a formulation of the problem in propositional logic and applying SAT solvers;a human-readable version of the computer-generated proof is obtained by extracting a minimal unsatisfiable set (MUS). We also discuss several related axiomatic questions in the domain of committee elections.

The manufacture of improved adhesive products that meet specified target properties has attracted increasing interest over the last decades. In this work, a general systematic methodology for the design of optimal adhesive products with low environmental impact is presented. The proposed approach integrates computer-aided design tools and Generalised Disjunctive Programming (GDP), a logic-based framework, to formulate and solve the product design problem. Key design decisions in product design (i.e., how many components should be included in the final product, which active ingredients and solvent compounds should be used and in what proportions) are optimised simultaneously. This methodology is applied to the design of solvent-based acrylic adhesives, which are commonly used in construction. First, optimal product formulations are determined with the aim to minimize toxicity. This reveals that number of components in the product formulation does not correlate with performance and that high performance can be achieved by investigating different number of components as well as by optimising all ingredients simultaneously rather than sequentially. The relation between two competing objectives (product toxicity and concentration of the active ingredient) is then explored by obtaining a set of Pareto optimal solutions. This leads to significant trade-offs and large areas of discontinuity driven by discrete changes in the list of optimal ingredients in the product. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Conventional design of experiments (DoE) methods require expert knowledge about the investigated factors and their boundary values and mostly lead to multiple rounds of time-consuming and costly experiments. The combination of DoE with mathematical process modeling in model-assisted DoE (mDoE) can be used to increase the mechanistic understanding of the process. Furthermore, it is aimed to optimize the processes with respect to a target (e.g., amount of cells, product titer), which also provides new insights into the process. In this chapter, the workflow of mDoE is explained stepwise including corresponding protocols. Firstly, a mathematical process model is adapted to cultivation data of first experimental data or existing knowledge. Secondly, model-assisted simulations are treated in the same way as experimentally derived data and included as responses in statistical DoEs. The DoEs are then evaluated based on the simulated data, and a constrained-based optimization of the experimental space can be conducted. This loop can be repeated several times and significantly reduces the number of experiments in process development. less
