THE VARIABILITY OF MEASURING SPERM CONCENTRATION AND MOTILITY AS DETERMINED BY computer-assisted image-ANALYSIS AND VISUAL ESTIMATION

Systems of computer-assisted image processing (CAIP) offer good reproducibility and low intra-assay variability between replicate analyses of the same sample. The correlation between these values and those obtained by directly microscopic observation can be well demonstrated. The comparability between systems of different manufacturers is sufficient and satisfactory. Thus, they are well-suited for the routine work in the andrologic laboratory. Since sperm parameters are used for the prediction of male fertility, it is important to know whether computer-assisted analysis improves the predictive power as compared to visual estimation. In our study we compared the variation of semen parameters between two semen samples of the same individual taken in an interval of at least 3 months, by using the CAIP and visual methods. Significantly close correlations between the two values were obtained by both methods. Values of cell concentration showed the highest correlation in both methods (r=0.75). The lowest correlation, but also statistically significant, was observed in the values of locally motile cells (r=0.54 for CAIP and r=0.30 for visual determination). Although apparantly higher in CAIP within method correlation coefficients did not show statistically meaningful differences between both methods. We conclude from our study that if values of sperm concentration and motility as measured by CAIP are compared to those obtained by visual measurement, the first method is not superior to the latter in terms of retest reliability.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical performance of an experimental flat-panel digital X-ray detector plate (FDXD), and to assess clinical potential in radiographic and fluoroscopic node. The efficiency of the detector was assessed by the low-frequency detective quantum efficiency and a measure of image quality was threshold contrast detail detectability object. The DQE(0) of system was calculated to be almost 75%, compared with a value of approximately 20% for modern computed radiography equipment, offering the potential image quality or significant dose Measurements using the TCDD test object demonstrated a corresponding advantage for the image quality and dose efficiency. Clinical are producing radiographic results which are the equal of the best currently available digital and a limited number of examinations fluoroscopic mode at 25 frames per second have equally encouraging. Equipment using FDXD technology could potentially fulfill all the radiographic and fluoroscopic requirements of the digital department improved image quality image quality and dose efficiency.

Endovascular image-guided navigation - validation of two volume-volume registration algorithms

The limited volume covered by intraoperatively acquired CT scans makes the use of navigation systems difficult. Preoperative images cover a larger volume of interest. Hence, reliable registration of high quality preoperative to intraoperative CT will provide the necessary image information required for navigation. This study evaluates two algorithms (Siemens, CAMP) for volume-volume registration for usage during endovascular navigation. Twenty patients treated for abdominal aortic aneurysm were scanned with pre-, intra- and postoperative CT. Six data sets were excluded due to variations in image acquisition parameters and severe artifacts. Fourteen intra- and postoperative datasets were registered ten times with both algorithms, altogether 140 registrations for each program. In all data sets five specified landmarks placed by two radiologists were used to evaluate registration accuracy. The distance between the paired landmarks in the registered intra-and postoperative volumes was measured and the root mean square value calculated. Reference registrations were based on rigid body registration of the five landmarks in the intra-and postoperative volumes. Registration accuracy (mean +/- SD) was for Siemens 5.05 +/- 4.74 mm, for CAMP 4.02 +/- 1.52 mm and for the reference registrations 2.72 +/- 1.18 mm. The registration algorithms differed significantly, p < 0.001.

Iterative correction applied to streak artifact reduction in an X-ray computed tomography image of the dento-alveolar region

Streak artifacts that appear on dental and maxillofacial X-ray computed tomography (CT) images are mainly caused by the presence of metallic prosthetic appliances. Because of the design of common CT hardware, the thin slice thickness method is routinely used in CT examinations of the dento-alveolar region. Thus, within the resulting collection of thin slice images, adjacent CT images will often depict very similar anatomical structures. We took advantage of this aspect and employed iterative correction to reduce the streak artifact caused by metallic materials. The maximum likelihood-expectation maximization (ML-EM) reconstruction algorithm, a type of statistical reconstruction method, was applied to multidetector CT images. The ML-EM is an iterative restoration method that approximates between the processed image and the original projection data. In our study, we processed slices with heavy streak artifacts by using the projection data of an adjacent CT image without any major artifacts. Because the adjacent slices depicted very similar anatomical structures, they became the target of the proposed processing. Thus, the processing is essentially an iterative correction. The iterative correction was carried out 50 times. Processed images at the initial stage were blurred, but some streak artifacts clearly disappeared as the iteration progressed. An ML-EM reconstruction algorithm can be used to modify iterative correction to reduce streak artifacts in dental and maxillofacial CT images. We used an image that contained heavy artifacts in our study, and after 50 iterative correction cycles, only a few weak artifacts remained on the processed image. The final image produced by our iterative correction method depicted clear anatomical structures and developed only marginal deviations from the original image.

In order to realize a fully automated thermogram analysis package for breast cancer-detection, it is necessary to identify the region of interest in the thermal image prior to analysis. A nearly fully automated approach is outlined that is able to successfully locate the breast regions in most of the images analyzed. The approach consists of a sequence of Canny edge detectors to determine the body boundaries and to isolate the most likely candidates for the bottom breast boundary. Three different strategies for identifying the bottom breast boundary are investigated: a variation of the Hough transform to identify the curved edges in the image, an algorithm used to detect the longest connected edges that are not part of the body boundary, and a third approach involving the density of detected edges in the breast region. The last two methods show great promise in successfully segmenting the breasts.

Objectives: Quantitative analysis of the biofilm has been critical for pathogenicity of oral diseases such as caries and periodontal disease. Currently, the plaque control record (PCR) is used most frequently to evaluate the presence of plaque on teeth, but no quantification methods exist so far. The aim of this study was to establish a method to quantify plaque adhesion on teeth. Methods: A novel algorithm and executing program was developed to calculate the staining volume of biofilm on plastic disks or extracted teeth inoculated by Streptococcus mutans from photographic image data. The biofilm's volume on plastic disks was determined using a confocal microscope, and correlations between image analysis data were analyzed. Subsequently, the amount of plaque in the oral cavity was clinically evaluated using this algorithm. Results: A strong correlation was observed between the biofilm's volume and the image analysis data. Similar results were also obtained with the biofilm model using extracted teeth. Clinically, it was revealed that an assessment of the amount of plaque adhesion for every tooth was possible, which could not be determined by PCR in the oral cavity. Conclusions: We successfully developed a novel method, designated "plaque volume ratio," to quantify the plaque accurately from photographic image data. Our findings indicated that this method may be useful for the evaluation of the amount of plaque on the surfaces of not only teeth but also dental materials in the oral cavity. Purpose: Gingival depigmentation, a procedure for establishing pink-white aesthetics, can be performed using different techniques. Objective assessment of the efficacy of one technique over another can aid in determining the most efficient method. This study was done to objectively compare the efficacy of three different methods of depigmentation: cryosurgery, electrosurgery and LASER, using photometry and the image tracing and analysing software, imageJ. Methods: Thirty subjects between 20 and 60 years who reported to the Department of Periodontology of a dental teaching hospital with the complaint of pigmented gingiva were divided into three groups randomly for depigmentation using cryosurgery, electrosurgery or LASER. The distribution of pigmentation was assessed using the gingival pigmentation index (GPI) and the intensity of pigmentation was analysed using the software, imageJ. The parameters were assessed at baseline, in the immediate post-operative phase and at 1-, 3- and 6-month post-depigmentation. The data obtained was analysed using ANOVA with post hoc Bonferroni test. Results: There was a reduction in distribution and intensity of pigmentation in all groups in the initial period following depigmentation. Beyond 3 months, the distribution of pigmentation increased for the cryosurgery group, followed by electrosurgery and LASER groups. Using the imageJ to assess the intensity of pigmentation, it was found that at 6 months, pigmentation density was greater in the electrosurgery group, followed by LASER and cryosurgery groups. Conclusion: Results obtained indicate that although cryosurgery has the greatest effect on the intensity of pigmentation, LASER is the modality of choice from the perspective of patient acceptability and distribution of pigmentation. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG part of Springer Nature.

Reliability and reproducibility of a morpho-textural image analysis method over a patellar ligament ultrasonography

Objective: image analysis techniques over ultrasonograms may be useful to extract quantitative information. Because ecography and the selection of the area of interest are technician-dependent, the objective of this work was to calculate the reliability and the reproducibility of the analysis method. Material and methods: Test-retest reliability study on 60 cross-sectional patellar ligament ultrasonograms on 1cm of patella were carried out. Sonosite Titan L-38 (5-10 MHz) and the image analysis software J v1.40 were used. Morphometric variables were: perimeter, area, width, thickness, and mean echogenity;textural variables were: uniformity, homogeneity and entropy. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated with a confidence interval of 95%. Results: Intraclass correlation coefficients over 0.70 were found, with an agreement ranging from good to very good in all of the variables both for the intra ecography and inter ecography studies. Conclusion: Very good levels of reliability and internal consistency were seen, demonstrating that from the statistical point of view, the variability introduced by the technician is not significant. This method can be taken as a reference to analyze the reliability between several ultrasonographers. Copyright (C) 2009 Elsevier Espana, S.L. All rights reserved.

Adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction improves image quality without affecting perfusion CT quantitation in primary colorectal cancer

Objectives: To determine the effect of Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR) on perfusion CT (pCT) parameter quantitation and image quality in primary colorectal cancer. Methods: Prospective observational study. Following institutional review board approval and informed consent, 32 patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma underwent pCT (100 kV, 150 mA, 120 s acquisition, axial mode). Tumour regional blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), mean transit time (MTT) and permeability surface area product (PS) were determined using identical regions-of-interests for ASIR percentages of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%. image noise, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and pCT parameters were assessed across ASIR percentages. Coefficients of variation (CV), repeated measures analysis of variance (rANOVA) and Spearman' rank order correlation were performed with statistical significance at 5%. Results: With increasing ASIR percentages, image noise decreased by 33% while CNR increased by 61%;peak tumour CNR was greater than 1.5 with 60% ASIR and above. Mean BF, BV, MTT and PS differed by less than 1.8%, 2.9%, 2.5% and 2.6% across ASIR percentages. CV were 4.9%, 4.2%, 3.3% and 7.9%;rANOVA P values: 0.85, 0.62, 0.02 and 0.81 respectively. Conclusions: ASIR improves image noise and CNR without altering pCT parameters substantially.

High-resolution terahertz digital holography based on frequency-domain diagonal extension imaging

By leveraging frequency-domain diagonal extension (FDDE) imaging in terahertz (THz) in-line digital holography, the resolution of THz digital holography would be dramatically improved. The holography system in this work which utilizes a CO2-pumped 2.52 THz (118.83 mu m) continuous-wave laser as the source and a pyroelectric-array camera with a pixel pitch of 100 mu m as the detector could attain a resolution of 150 mu m (similar to 1.26 lambda) near to the resolution limit of the system. FDDE imaging is a simple and effective method for resolution enhancement, where no new detector or other equipment is employed. Samples are imaged twice from different angles and then the high-frequency components of images are stitched to improve the resolution. Different from the traditional FDDE, weight-FDDE (w-FDDE) which can reduce the visibility distinction between different orientations of the synthetic picture by adding weight factors to produce a superior synthetic image is proposed in this work.
