In the current era of big data, applications increasingly rely on powerful computing infrastructure residing in large data centers (DCs), often adopting cloud computing technology. Clearly, this necessitates efficient and resilient networking infrastructure to connect the users of these applications with the data centers hosting them. In this paper, we focus on backbone network infrastructure on large geographical scales (i.e., the so-called wide area networks), which typically adopts optical network technology. In particular, we study the problem of dimensioning such backbone networks: what bandwidth should each of the links provide for the traffic, originating at known sources, to reach the data centers? And possibly even: how many such DCs should we deploy, and at what locations? More concretely, we summarize our recent work that essentially addresses the following fundamental research questions: (1) Does the anycast routing strategy influence the amount of required network resources? (2) Can we exploit anycast routing for resilience purposes, i.e., relocate to a different DC under failure conditions, to reduce resource capacity requirements? (3) Is it advantageous to change anycast request destinations from one DC location to the other, from one time period to the next, if service requests vary over time?

This paper investigates the non-uniqueness of resolvent analysis in the context of compressible fluid flows. Specifically, we compare two mathematically equivalent formulations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) in two sets of flow variables related via a nonlinear transformation, which we refer to as the 'Cubic+' and 'Quadratic+' formulations. The Cubic+ formulation is based on the conventional representation of compressible NSEs using the primitive variables of density, velocity components and temperature, whereas the Quadratic+ formulation utilizes a representation where density and temperature are replaced by specific volume and pressure, respectively. These formulations are implemented on a compressible plane Couette flow for a broad range of Mach numbers. Although the Quadratic+ formulation generally predicts higher amplifications than the Cubic+ formulation when the Chu energy is utilized for the compressible inner product, this trend reverses if kinetic energy is instead used to define the inner product. Furthermore, for some combinations of the streamwise and spanwise wavenumber pairs, the two formulations predict substantially different temporal behaviors. These range from differences in estimating the temporal frequencies for the largest gains to instances wherein one formulation predicts a single global peak when the other predicts multiple local peaks. In addition, the Quadratic+ results feature localized regions of wavenumber space associated with high resolvent gains that are absent in the Cubic+ results, but are qualitatively comparable to one another otherwise. The inconsistencies observed in resolvent analysis based on the two formulations considered here suggest that any insights drawn from resolvent analysis should be accompanied by computational and/or experimental studies to corroborate findings and interpretations of the underlying physics.

This paper studies the use of multi-fidelity surrogate modeling for analysis of hypersonic vehicles with a focus on the computation of trajectory sensitivities to inform sampling policy. A multi-fidelity aerodynamic database is generated for a hypersonic glide vehicle and surrogate accuracy is assessed for different numbers of high-fidelity samples. A methodology for computing sensitivities of trajectory quantities of interest to surrogate-modeled aerodynamic parameters is applied to hypersonic glide vehicle dynamics. The necessary adjoint equations are derived to compute sensitivities to aerodynamic parameters, which are then used to inform high-fidelity sampling. Of several strategies assessed, sensitivity-based sampling is found to give the best performance for fixed computational cost. Extensions of this methodology are discussed in the context of future work, including the use of sensitivities to allocate simulations among several disciplines in multidisciplinary design problems.

With the rapid development of computer technology and the rapid promotion of smart grid construction, more and more intelligent terminals are used in smart grids as a key equipment terminal. There are many advantages when intelligent terminals are introduced, such as more convenient and accurate when collecting data. However, the introduction of intelligent terminals also brings certain security problems to the smart grid. Attackers can more easily invade the smart grid through intelligent terminals and destroy the power supply. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the security of intelligent terminals in power grids. Trusted computing technology is an information security solution that builds a secure and trusted computing environment. Based on the trusted computing technology, a new architecture of intelligent grid terminals is proposed in this paper. Combined with the actual needs of grid intelligent terminals, a new trusted startup model and integrity measurement model are constructed.

The Computational Aircraft Prototype Syntheses (CAPS) enables vehicle designers to create multi-disciplinary, multi-fidelity analysis models from a single, parametric geometric source. These capabilities are natively accessed programmatically through an interface written in the C programing language, which can present a significant hurdle for initial users. To lower entry barriers, enable scriptable problem formulation, and improve overall flexibility, a Python-based interface module, pyCAPS, was created. The following paper provides an overview of pyCAPS's capabilities and interface, while also providing simple examples of its use. Furthermore, details and discussions are provided on how pyCAPS can be used to integrate CAPS capabilities into external Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) frameworks such as OpenMDAO, modeFRONTIER, and MSTC Engineering.

A calculation model for the evaluation of photometric calibration readings ist described. The model checks and takes into account the homogeneity of the blank data, determines the optimum functional correlation between concentration and measured values (optical density or transmittance) and finally tests the whole data material with respect to runaway data. The course of calculation and the numerous logical decisions required were programmed in the problem-oriented computer language ALGOL. The evaluation can, therefore, be restricted to simple input/output processes which can be handled by people without mathematical background. An example of application with two series of calibration readings shows that the electronic evaluation takes less than 6 min, whereas the time consumption for conventional calculation technique is 200 times greater. © 1968 Springer-Verlag.

Our objective with this study is to compare three distinct periods of CPR development. We contrast the original concerns regarding computer/information systems personnel from the early days of computing with emergent concerns reflecting the accumulation of evolution of both computing technology and IS management in the subsequent years. In order to accomplish our goal, we review the proceedings of the Computer Personnel Research (CPR) group analyzing the very first proceedings (1962), the next five proceedings (1964 to 1969), and the most recent five proceedings (2006 to 2011). Our intention is to present and analyze a broad picture of trends illustrating them with vignettes from practice and observations derived from particular studies. Finally, we identify and comment on the array of themes and topics that the CPR conferences have addressed in the most recent five years.

Ways to improve common engineering spreadsheet practices are reviewed, with attention paid both to software design and to calculation techniques. It is pointed out that, despite its limitations, the spreadsheet platform still permits the implementation of some structured software engineering principles. Some basic techniques to serve this end are discussed. It is also highlighted that the spreadsheet framework is best utilized for engineering design and analysis if numerical techniques (integration schemes, iterative approaches, geometric construction, and solutions based on some unique aspect of a formulation) predating the computer era are included in the algorithmic repertoire. Old-time numerics well fit the spreadsheet framework, and can greatly enhance program accuracy and efficiency. This is illustrated with two examples: the assessment with the equilibrium method (i.e., the "principle of perturbations") of the stability of a non-uniform cantilever column, and the solution with the Ritz method of the governing vibration of a space solar array-like structure.

Recent improvements in the throughput of next-generation DNA sequencing machines poses a great computational challenge in analysing the massive quantities of data produced. This paper proposes a novel approach, based on reconfigurable computing technology, for accelerating short read mapping, where the positions of millions of short reads are located relative to a known reference sequence. Our approach consists of two key components: an exact string matcher for the bulk of the alignment process, and an approximate string matcher for the remaining cases. We characterise interesting regions of the design space, including homogeneous, heterogeneous and run-time reconfigurable designs and provide back of envelope estimations of the corresponding performance. We show that a particular implementation of this architecture targeting a single FPGA can be up to 293 times faster than BWA on an Intel X5650 CPU, and 134 times faster than SOAP3 on an NVIDIA GTX 580 GPU.
