Approaches in Cultural computing: A Survey and Inference from Social computing with Dynamics of Mind

Cultural computing is mainly viewed as the integration of computing technology with the culture. Being inherently interdisciplinary and multidimensional, it requires an explicit comprehension as the way it developed as well as expanded from the history of technological areas. This article addresses the need for cultural computing as well as comprehensively studies existing cultural computing approaches and models from different perspectives. An insight towards dynamics of mind and its incorporation in the virtual world of Internet and social computing has been provided. The article concludes with a summary providing useful suggestions for future developments.

This special issue encompasses eight papers devoted to the recent developments in the field of Data Mining. The issue originated from presentations of the special issue "Soft computing Techniques in Data Mining" at "10th International Conference on Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning (IDEAL 09)" held in Burgos (Spain), September 23-26th, 2009, together with invited papers from well recognized researchers in the topic. Ten papers were submitted to the special issue, every paper was revised by at least three referees and finally seven of them were accepted according to the referees' evaluations.

Applying of artificial intelligence techniques to designing of an autopilot for path following control of an underwater robotic vehicle is considered in the paper. The way-point line of sight scheme is incorporated for the tracking of the reference path and four independent fuzzy controllers are used to generate command signals. Parameters of membership functions of input and output are tuned using genetic algorithms. Quality of control is concerned without and in presence of external disturbances. Some computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the approach.

Approximate computing has become a well-known computing technique in recent years. It relies on the ability of many systems and applications to self-heal or to tolerate some loss of quality or optimality in the computed result. The main idea is to exploit the inherent error resiliency or error tolerance of the system to achieve energy efficiency, or in other words, trading accuracy with energy consumption. Such trade-off, in most cases, is also associated with performance improvements like faster operations, area reduction etc. Fortunately, most of the heavy workloads nowadays exhibit intrinsic application resilience [1],[2]. In most multimedia applications, the final output is interpreted by human senses, which are not perfect. This fact averts the need to produce exact outputs. Recent research efforts have quantitatively ascertained the high degree of inherent resilience in many applications. For example, our analysis of a benchmark suite of 12 recognition, vision and multimedia applications shows that on average, 83 % of the runtime is spent in computations that can tolerate at least some degree of approximation [3]. Therefore, there is a potential to leverage inherent resilience in a broad context. Let us consider digital signal processing (DSP). In multi-media applications, DSP blocks implement image, sound and video processing algorithms, where the final output is either an image or sound or a video for human senses. When interpreting an image or a sound or a video, human beings have limited perceptual capacities. This allows the system to be flexible in producing quality outputs. As an example, the relaxation on numerical precision provides some freedom to carry out imprecise or approximate computation. Another example of approximate signal processing is the utilization of incremental refinement. Comparison of computing capability and information system abilities of state hospitals owned by Ministry of Labor and Social Security and Ministry of Health

The main purpose of this study is to give an idea to the readers about how big and important the computing and information problems that hospital managers as well as policy makers will face with after collecting the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MoLSS) and Ministry of Health (MoH) hospitals under single structure in Turkey by comparing the current level of computing capability of hospitals owned by two ministries. The data used in this study were obtained from 729 hospitals that belong to both ministries by using a data collection *** results indicate that there have been considerable differences among the hospitals owned by the two ministries in terms of human resources and information systems. The hospital managers and decision makers making their decisions based on the data produced by current hospital information system (HIS) would more likely face very important difficulties after merging MoH and MoLSS hospitals in Turkey. It is also possible to claim that the level and adequacy of computing abilities and devices do not allow the managers of public hospitals to use computer technology effectively in their information management practices. Lack of technical information, undeveloped information culture, inappropriate management styles, and being inexperienced are the main reasons of why HIS does not run properly and effectively in Turkish hospitals. © Springer Science+Business Media, Inc. 2006.

The growing number of locally and globally connected devices and infrastructure services is symptomatic for increasing user requirements on convenient, comfortable, fast and cheap remote computing and access to data. Distributed computing techniques in combination with on-demand Clouds help matching the requirements and the offered resources. This paper evaluates existing distributed computing models according to their specific code, data and resource handling and defines a specific one, called dispersed computing, by consolidating existing research on dispersed data transmission, data storage and code execution. It furthermore contributes a mapping of the model to typical Cloud environments. Complementary, we share our experience with dispersed computing implementations.

The availability and utility of large numbers of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) have enabled parallel computations using extensive multi-threading. Sequential access to global memory and contention at the size-limited shared memory have been main impediments to fully exploiting potential performance in architectures having a massive number of GPUs. We propose novel memory storage and retrieval techniques that enable parallel graph computations to overcome the above issues. More specifically, given a graph G = (V, E) and an integer k <= vertical bar V vertical bar, we provide both storage techniques and algorithms to count the number of: a) connected subgraphs of size k;b) k cliques;and c) k independent sets, all of which can be exponential in number. Our storage technique is based on creating a breadth-first search tree and storing it along with non-tree edges in a novel way. The counting problems mentioned above have many uses, including the analysis of social networks.

For years, the fuels based vehicle has played a key role in the history of mankind. Such a type of vehicles has played it part not just as main transportation but also in many types of purposed as required of them. Currently, fossil fuels are the main sources of energy for the transportation mode around the world. Burning of fossil fuels will release heavy and vast amount of carbon agents into the environment which detrimental effect to the nature, surrounding and the population of earth be it humans, plants or mammals. For that a solution to reduce the gas emission from fossil fuels vehicle to prevent more ill-effect to the environment is required. New technology such as fully Electronic Vehicles (EVs) is considered as one of the best solutions to mitigate this problem. With the integration of computing or Information and Communication technology (ICT) can help to further improvise this future transportation and at the same time can reduce its negative impacts. This paper will review selected articles and papers published between 2001 and 2019 that contain information and terms that related climate change, global warming, environment, future transportation and computing technology. These articles were further inspected and the decision for its inclusion and exclusion were mediated to develop a comprehensive review on global warming issues that are related to transportation and how ICT can assist in mitigating them.
