The genre of “computer art” began in the 1950s, when long exposure photography was used to capture images created by an oscilloscope manipulating electronic waves on a small fluorescent screen. Through the 1960s, most works of computer art were created using plotters and impact printers by the scientists and engineers who had access to emerging computing technology. By the 1970s, artists were learning to program, and some universities began to integrate computers into the fine arts curriculum. The widespread adoption of computers and the availability of off-the-shelf paint programs in the 1980s brought computer art to the masses. At the same time, computer graphics and special effects were beginning their takeover of the entertainment industry through Hollywood films, TV shows, and video games. By the 1990s, the term computer art was fading, and computers were becoming a mainstream part of arts and entertainment.

Editor\'s Note In this issue\'s \"Antenna Applications Corner\" column, authors Balamati Choudhury, Susan Thomas, and Rakesh Mohan Jha describe various techniques available for soft computing to tackle large, nonlinear problems in electromagnetics and antenna designs. Soft computing techniques differ from hard computational methods, and they do not rely on stringent mathematical formulations but instead are based on imitating biological systems such as human intelligence, genetic inheritance, and foraging behavior. These methods are useful in adaptive antenna arrays, metamaterials, and space/air vehicles.

Approximate computing has become a well-known computing technique in recent years. It relies on the ability of many systems and applications to self-heal or to tolerate some loss of quality or optimality in the computed result. The main idea is to exploit the inherent error resiliency or error tolerance of the system to achieve energy efficiency, or in other words, trading accuracy with energy consumption. Such trade-off, in most cases, is also associated with performance improvements like faster operations, area reduction etc. Fortunately, most of the heavy workloads nowadays exhibit intrinsic application resilience [1],[2]. In most multimedia applications, the final output is interpreted by human senses, which are not perfect. This fact averts the need to produce exact outputs. Recent research efforts have quantitatively ascertained the high degree of inherent resilience in many applications. For example, our analysis of a benchmark suite of 12 recognition, vision and multimedia applications shows that on average, 83 % of the runtime is spent in computations that can tolerate at least some degree of approximation [3]. Therefore, there is a potential to leverage inherent resilience in a broad context. Let us consider digital signal processing (DSP). In multi-media applications, DSP blocks implement image, sound and video processing algorithms, where the final output is either an image or sound or a video for human senses. When interpreting an image or a sound or a video, human beings have limited perceptual capacities. This allows the system to be flexible in producing quality outputs. As an example, the relaxation on numerical precision provides some freedom to carry out imprecise or approximate computation. Another example of approximate signal processing is the utilization of incremental refinement. Recently, computer simulation scale for biomedical EMC becomes extremely huge, because numerical models, which represent shape, structure, configuration, etc., of biological bodies, increase these preciseness. Parallelizing simulation code is one of the effective solutions to deal with such a high definition and massive scale problem. Finite difference methods, frequently used for solving biomedical EMC problem, are classified as the stencil scheme which has the nature of memory-bound feature. Hence, it is desirable to employ many-core architecture with the high-speed memory bandwidth (approximately 200-300GB/s) such as the graphics processing unit (GPU) or the many integrated core (MIC) hardware accelerators. The purpose of this study is to accelerate the multiphysics simulation system for numerical dosimetries by the many-core architecture based computing technique.

Advancements in communication and computing technologies have made promising the decentralized control of automated material handling systems (AMHS) to alleviate blocking and congestion of production flows and raise productivity in an automated large-scale factory. With the growing availability of edge computing and low-cost mobile communications, either among vehicles (V2V) or between vehicles and machines (V2M), decentralized vehicle control may exploit frequent and low latency exchanges of neighborhood information and local control computation to increase AMHS operation efficiency. In this study, a decentralized control algorithm design, BALI (blocking avoidance by exploiting location information) algorithm, exploits V2X exchanges of local information for transport job matching, blocking inference, and job exchange for vehicle dispatching in AMHS. Performance evaluation of the BALI algorithm by discrete-event simulation shows that the BALI algorithm can significantly reduce blocking and congestion in production flows as compared to commonly used Nearest Job First rule-based heuristics.

Metal oxide-resistive memory using graphene-edge electrodes

The emerging paradigm of 'abundant-data' computing requires real-time analytics on enormous quantities of data collected by a mushrooming network of sensors. Todays computing technology, however, cannot scale to satisfy such big data applications with the required throughput and energy efficiency. The next technology frontier will be monolithically integrated chips with three-dimensionally interleaved memory and logic for unprecedented data bandwidth with reduced energy consumption. In this work, we exploit the atomically thin nature of the graphene edge to assemble a resistive memory (similar to 3 angstrom thick) stacked in a vertical three-dimensional structure. We report some of the lowest power and energy consumption among the emerging non-volatile memories due to an extremely thin electrode with unique properties, low programming voltages, and low current. Circuit analysis of the three-dimensional architecture using experimentally measured device properties show higher storage potential for graphene devices compared that of metal based devices.

In the current era of big data, applications increasingly rely on powerful computing infrastructure residing in large data centers (DCs), often adopting cloud computing technology. Clearly, this necessitates efficient and resilient networking infrastructure to connect the users of these applications with the data centers hosting them. In this paper, we focus on backbone network infrastructure on large geographical scales (i.e., the so-called wide area networks), which typically adopts optical network technology. In particular, we study the problem of dimensioning such backbone networks: what bandwidth should each of the links provide for the traffic, originating at known sources, to reach the data centers? And possibly even: how many such DCs should we deploy, and at what locations? More concretely, we summarize our recent work that essentially addresses the following fundamental research questions: (1) Does the anycast routing strategy influence the amount of required network resources? (2) Can we exploit anycast routing for resilience purposes, i.e., relocate to a different DC under failure conditions, to reduce resource capacity requirements? (3) Is it advantageous to change anycast request destinations from one DC location to the other, from one time period to the next, if service requests vary over time?
