This paper investigates the non-uniqueness of resolvent analysis in the context of compressible fluid flows. Specifically, we compare two mathematically equivalent formulations of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) in two sets of flow variables related via a nonlinear transformation, which we refer to as the 'Cubic+' and 'Quadratic+' formulations. The Cubic+ formulation is based on the conventional representation of compressible NSEs using the primitive variables of density, velocity components and temperature, whereas the Quadratic+ formulation utilizes a representation where density and temperature are replaced by specific volume and pressure, respectively. These formulations are implemented on a compressible plane Couette flow for a broad range of Mach numbers. Although the Quadratic+ formulation generally predicts higher amplifications than the Cubic+ formulation when the Chu energy is utilized for the compressible inner product, this trend reverses if kinetic energy is instead used to define the inner product. Furthermore, for some combinations of the streamwise and spanwise wavenumber pairs, the two formulations predict substantially different temporal behaviors. These range from differences in estimating the temporal frequencies for the largest gains to instances wherein one formulation predicts a single global peak when the other predicts multiple local peaks. In addition, the Quadratic+ results feature localized regions of wavenumber space associated with high resolvent gains that are absent in the Cubic+ results, but are qualitatively comparable to one another otherwise. The inconsistencies observed in resolvent analysis based on the two formulations considered here suggest that any insights drawn from resolvent analysis should be accompanied by computational and/or experimental studies to corroborate findings and interpretations of the underlying physics.

Modified Chebyshev Picard iteration (MCPI) is a numerical integrator have been developed to benefit from the availability of parallel architecture (parallelized processing, multiple cores and Graphic Processing Units (GPUs)). The serial formulation of MCPI has proven to be an efficient and accurate method for propagating perturbed orbital motion. However, one significant advantage of MCPI is that it is well suited to parallelization. Initial efforts to implement MCPI using parallel computation have shown additional speedup. This paper presents an efficient GPU parallel implementation of perturbed orbit propagation. It also compares the performance of incorporating various gravity fields with different number of nodes.

Federated learning (FL) is a cutting-edge machine learning platform that protects user privacy while enabling collaborative learning across various devices. It is particularly relevant in the current environment when massive volumes of data are generated at the edge of networks by developing technologies like social networking, cloud computing, edge computing, and the Internet of Things. FL reduces the possibility of unauthorized access by third parties by allowing data to stay on local devices, hence mitigating any privacy breaches. The integration of FL in Cloud, Edge, and hybrid Edge-Cloud settings are some of the computing paradigms that this study investigates. We highlight the salient features of FL, go over the main obstacles to its implementation and use, and make recommendations for future study directions. Furthermore, we assess how FL, by facilitating safe and cooperative data sharing among vehicles, can improve service quality in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Our study findings are intended to offer practical insights and suggestions that may have an impact on a variety of computing technology research topics. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

We present a fully parallel digital memcomputing solver implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board. For this purpose, we have designed an FPGA code that solves the ordinary differential equations associated with digital memcomputing in parallel. A feature of the code is the use of only integer-type variables and integer constants to enhance optimization. Consequently, each integration step in our solver is executed in 96 ns. This method was utilized for difficult instances of the Boolean satisfiability (SAT) problem close to a phase transition, involving up to about 150 variables. Our results demonstrate that the parallel implementation reduces the scaling exponent by about 1 compared to a sequential C++ code on a standard computer. Additionally, compared to C++ code, we observed a time-to-solution advantage of about three orders of magnitude. Given the limitations of FPGA resources, the current implementation of digital memcomputing will be especially useful for solving compact but challenging problems.

Unmanned vehicles are becoming increasingly more capable of performing surveillance and reconnaissance tasks in place of manned vehicles or human operators. In particular, small UAVs provide an inexpensive alternative to larger scale surveillance aircraft, be they manned, or unmanned. While they are restricted in carrying less surveillance equipment due to their size, these vehicles can be deployed in large numbers as a swarm to make up for their individual shortcomings. Due to their small size, however, these UAVs typically do not operate well in turbulent conditions, and are susceptible to disturbances such as wind gusts. The issue here is determining how to organize the swarm to make best use of its size and position and to overcome stability deficiencies at the vehicle level. This study creates a model of a UAV swarm using an agent-based simulation approach and will attempt to determine how to use clustering methods and various individual behaviors to maintain resiliency at the swarm level in response to wind gusts. The mission to be tested will be a search and rescue mission, in which the UAVs need to surveil an area and locate a target. The model will organize the vehicles into isolated formations, and these formations will be split into distinct groups using k-means clustering based on their positions over the target area. In addition, a wind gust behavior will be modeled to displace the UAVs, with obstacles placed within the mission coverage area and collisions between UAVs modeled as well, in order to capture the impact of a gust on the swarm, which is quantified in terms of vehicle losses. It is expected that the use of clustering during the mission will decrease the time required to locate the target while also reducing the number of vehicles lost due to collisions.

The continuous advances in mobile computing technologies have paved the way to the spreading of new classes of collaborative mobile applications. Clustering the mobile nodes into local groups may promote and ease collaborations. In this paper we propose a clustering scheme formulated as a multi-criteria optimization problem based on the weighted-sum approach. The aim of the optimization is to maximize the network lifetime and the mobility similarity of the devices within a group. Depending on the specific application scenario, the weights associated to the cost functions can be properly tuned. Experimental results show that by using the proposed approach, the network lifetime is extended and the number of alive devices is significantly higher compared to alternative clustering strategies, while meeting application-level performance constraints as high mobility similarity within a cluster.

Manual cost estimation is a task that requires experience;it is tedious, cumbersome and error-prone. As a result, manual estimation results are influenced by each estimator's judgement or opinion. The use of computing technology can help automate this cost estimation process, reducing the subjectivity in estimation, improving the efficiency and the accuracy of cost estimation. This has been shown by the success of various building information modeling (BIM) software products. Nevertheless, existing cost estimation automation methods in these tools are still limited in terms of: (1) interoperability - in spite of their compliance with the industry foundation classes (IFC) schema, the detailed implementation in complying with IFC is largely proprietary;and (2) full automation - manual input is needed in various ways to fulfill the information need of the cost estimation automation. To address these two limitations, in this study, the authors developed a method and algorithms for fully automated cost estimation in wood construction, leveraging the fundamental geometric representation of wood building object representations in IFC models for quantity takeoff, and a price computation using a cost database generated from RSMeans Assemblies Cost Data 2015. The developed automated cost estimation method and algorithms were implemented in java programs and tested in a case study wood building project in Kalamazoo, MI area. By comparing with estimates from existing BIM tools, improvement in interoperability and a reduction in manual input were observed using the authors' newly developed method and algorithms.

Our objective with this study is to compare three distinct periods of CPR development. We contrast the original concerns regarding computer/information systems personnel from the early days of computing with emergent concerns reflecting the accumulation of evolution of both computing technology and IS management in the subsequent years. In order to accomplish our goal, we review the proceedings of the Computer Personnel Research (CPR) group analyzing the very first proceedings (1962), the next five proceedings (1964 to 1969), and the most recent five proceedings (2006 to 2011). Our intention is to present and analyze a broad picture of trends illustrating them with vignettes from practice and observations derived from particular studies. Finally, we identify and comment on the array of themes and topics that the CPR conferences have addressed in the most recent five years.

Eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) is a widely-used factorization tool to perform principal component analysis, and has been employed for dimensionality reduction and pattern recognition in many scientific and engineering applications, such as image processing, text mining and wireless communications. EVD is considered computationally expensive, and as software implementations have not been able to meet the performance requirements of many real-time applications, the use of reconfigurable computing technology has shown promise in accelerating this type of computation. In this paper, we present an efficient FPGA-based double-precision floating-point architecture for EVD, which can efficiently analyze large-scale matrices. Our experimental results using an FPGA-based hybrid acceleration system indicate the efficiency of our novel array architecture, with dimension-dependent speedups over an optimized software implementation that range from 1.5x to 15.45x in terms of computation time.
