Smetana has written an integrated course book about dynamics and automatic controls for introductory students in vibrations, dynamics, digital and automatic controls, dynamics of machinery, linear systems, and modeling. Upper-level undergraduate students are sure to benefit from Smetana’s 40 years of experience in the field. The book emphasizes a common methodology and seeks to aid student understanding with SOLVE software to permit easy and comprehensive numerical experiments to answer “what if” questions. It includes more than 350 illustrations, and details about how solutions are achieved and how to analyze the results. Discussion of various software packages reinforces the author’s view that “engineering education will eventually emulate the engineering workplace in its use of ‘canned’ software.” A 95-page user’s manual for the SOLVE software provides FORTRAN codes for evaluating analytical solutions to systems of linear differential equations; it comes with two 3.5-inch PC diskettes. The goal is to prepare the newly graduated engineer to analyze the response of a flexible system to command and to determine rationally how the system’s performance can be brought to the desired level of performance.

This interdisciplinary book combines the astronomical and the engineering approaches to those questions of space research that are known as orbit and trajectory problems. The new word 'Astrodynamics' (no reference to stellar dynamics) intends to represent a field that emphasizes the engineering aspects of dynamical astronomy. The application of a highly developed mathematical science which is soundly embedded in hundreds of years of tradition to the newest engineering problems is one of the most challenging tasks to representatives of both fields. This book intends to meet this challenge by covering the most significant and recent developments in a systematic, though not at all textbook like, manner. It is prepared for the worker in the field with background in celestial mechanics and with familiarity with the engineering *** chapters are organized according to the major functional subjects of space dynamics rather than along operational lines. Indeed, it is aimed at the discussion, first, of general ideas, and then these are interspersed with examples. Chapter 1 reports on the most advanced analytical methods, recently proposed and developed, that attack new and old problems of celestial mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the physics of the solar system from the point of view of celestial mechanics. One of the major engineering problems of space dynamics, orbit selection, is the subject of the third chapter. Chapter 4 applies the general systems engineering aspects of the previous chapter to a specific mission. Probably the most popular subjects of space dynamics, orbit transfer, and optimization problems are treated in the fifth chapter. The last chapter deals with a classical subject of celestial mechanics, viz., the determination of orbits of objects already in motion. This chapter, therefore, closes the circle of subjects that starts with perturbation problems of celestial mechanics and ends with the inverse problem, i.e., orbit determination.

Introduction to Aircraft Flight Dynamics is geared directly toward senior undergraduate engineering students and beginning graduate students. The author uses linear algebraic principles and notations to establish airframe equations of motion. The use of this dimensional approach to stability derivatives when describing aerodynamic forces and moments in the six governing relations assures that the solutions to given problems remain in real time and frequency. In addition, the textbook uses modern control theory concepts to introduce the airframe as a plant matrix operator. Consistent reference is made to matrix algebra-oriented software, MATLAB®, as a tool for solving aircraft-related problems in both the linear and nonlinear forms. Contemporary analytical methods are also employed to describe the aerodynamics involved in flight vehicle motion and to develop a rationale for modeling and solving related problems in aircraft dynamics. The author also discusses modern control theory methods.

Electric propulsion has quickly assumed a prominent place in the space engineering program. The period of feasibility studies is over, the period of laboratory models has produced promising results, and the period of flight testing and engineering refinement has begun. Research for higher efficiency and for greater reliability is underway at many places. The great potential of electric propulsion systems for unmanned and manned space exploration, which is being recognized more and more, has led to many studies of mission applications. The present book attempts to give a cross section through those problems of electric propulsion that occupy the front line of interest and effort. It is based on papers that were presented during the Second Electric Propulsion Conference of the American Rocket Society in Berkeley, California, on March 14-16, 1962. Although a book of this kind lacks the coherence of a one-author book, it focuses the attention more on the existing problems and on their possible solutions. It will inform the specialist of the state of the art; it will stimulate the beginner to attack those problems that are most in need of further work; and it will help the long-range planner to appraise the potentialities of electric propulsion for future space programs.

The present volume is intended both as a report on, and an authoritative reference guide to, the present status of the closely connected fields of Guidance and Control, particularly as related to missiles and space vehicles. Like its predecessor in the series, Volume 8, this volume had its genesis in a Specialist Conference that was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1963. Although in no sense a proceedings of this conference, the present volume uses the same subdivisions of technology, i.e., Attitude Control, Inertial Guidance, Onboard Techniques, Manned Control, Deep Space Guidance and Navigation, Rendezvous, and Landing. To set the stage and to orient those readers who may not have had exposure to the more rapidly growing areas, the Editors have invited certain introductory review articles. They will assist the reader's entry into the subject and into the literature, and in addition they contain information basic to the more complex situations covered in the succeeding papers. In the selection of papers the guiding rule has been the exposure of diverse lines of inquiry, with particular attention given to those current lines of research that appear to be most promising.
