By combining into one volume a number of papers carefully chosen to illuminate important areas of technical development, it is possible to get this broader view of the whole field, its state of the art, and its pattern of development. This is the purpose of the present volume. The editors have grouped the the papers broadly into space guidance and path control, terrestrial guidance concepts and components, and other control topics. The first of these comprises three major mission phases: ascent from Earth to an orbit or space trajectory operations in space requiring navigation or guidance, and descent to the surface of Earth or the moon. The second group includes the system aspects of inertial navigation, gyroscopes as basic components of inertial navigation, and topics in optical navigation. The third group is less homogeneous. Its major divisions are adaptive control, a subject currently in the forefront of modern control theory developments, and attitude control, the major control phase in a space environment.

Over the past 25 years, the mass of man-made objects from upper-stage breakups has grown to the point that it now dictates the design environment for future low-Earth-orbit operations. Precision Aerial Delivery Systems: Modeling, Dynamics, and Control provides an overview of the recent developments in precision aerial cargo delivery from the standpoint of developing guidance, navigation and control (GNC) algorithms for the self-guided parafoil and parachute-based aerial delivery systems (PADS). Developing a robust GNC system involves aerodynamics modeling, structural and parametric system identification, understanding the environment PADS glides through developing and testing suitable navigation solutions, guidance strategies, and controllers. Introduction of ram-air gliding parachutes in sportive sky diving in the early 1970s ended the era of round canopies. Availability of GPS in the late 1990s opened an era of autonomous vehicles, which boosted an interest in self-guided PADS. A substantial improvement in achieving a better landing accuracy demonstrated by the different-weight PADS during the last decade expanded the area of their potential usage. Miniaturization and availability of sensors allowed developing micro-light PADS that not only have their own market niche, but make it possible for universities to utilize these systems in their curricula and research along with other unmanned vehicles. Thus the intended audience for this book is not only professionals and researchers, but graduate and postgraduate students working in the areas of aerial systems modeling and GNC algorithms design as well. This volume brings together a group of important papers on stratospheric circulation that have arisen from recent research, most of them from the programs of two seminars on this subject held in London in 1967 and in Tokyo in 1968. The seminars were sponsored by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). Efficient use of data produced by the global synoptic rocket network requires a general background knowledge of the new rocket systems, measurement techniques, observational programs, and data applications which have evolved during this first decade of the Meteorological Rocket Network. This volume provides a source of such material for the uninitiated as well as a comprehensive reference volume for the experienced rocket scientists who have participated in this cooperative synoptic venture. Although it has not been possible to include all aspects of MRN development, the coverage is sufficient to lead the investigator to all facets of this new cooperative atmospheric exploration system.
