During discussions that took place during a Colloquium on Numerical Methods for Engine-Airframe Integration at the AIAA 22nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting, several basic questions came to light in regard to the following: availability of computers, status of turbulence modeling, numerical methods for complex flows, and applicability of different levels and types of codes to specify flow interactions of interest in integration. The current volume is organized based on the four invited articles that address those basic questions and the revised and edited contributions. This volume is a comprehensive introduction to the current state of developments and the directions for advances in the application of computational methods as a primary tool for performance estimation and design.

When the first U.S. satellite was launched in January 1958, there were many skeptics as to the practical value of the space program. On April 1, 1960, in a little over two years, the world's first Earth observation satellite-TIROS-was successfully orbited, demonstrating for the first time the potential of remote sensing from space to provide direct benefits to mankind. This book covers the principal activities of remote sensing of the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans from space.

Communications Satellite Technology has been published simultaneously with its companion, Communications Satellite Systems, Volume 32 in this series. Communications satellites are now well within the commercial era-most of them are operational rather than experimental devices. And their capacity to process multiple signals simultaneously has expanded enormously: in the six years between the launchings of INTELSAT I (Early Bird, 1965) and INTELSAT IV, this capacity in terms of telephone circuits jumped from the low hundreds to the mid-thousands, and will increase in the next five years by at least one order of magnitude. Moreover, this is likely to be accomplished through the intelligent coordination of new systems and technologies rather than through "brute force" solutions in terms of mass and power. These companion volumes survey the present successes and future promises of commercial communications satellites. The 42 papers they contain are the work of outstanding authorities who are at the forefront of research and development. Many of the papers are of a general nature that will interest all those concerned with communication, and others will acquaint the specialist with specific network concepts and with satellite components and techniques that have been perfected or proposed. The 20 papers in Communication Satellite Systems are organized into sections on international applications, advanced concepts, and special topics. Communications Satellite Technology contains 22 papers, covering orbit and attitude control, propulsion and power, and communications.

Fred L. Whipple writes in his foreword to this book that "not only the meteors but almost all of the phenomena studied in this important volume are interface phenomena, partly or wholly arising from external radiation or particles from space impinging on our own private spaceship, the Earth." The papers included are focused on the physical processes that form the structure of the base of the thermosphere and on the meteor trail radar observational technique for extending synoptic meteorological exploration into the thermospheric region. Synoptic exploration of the upper atmosphere has proceeded rapidly during the past decade. Two experimental methods are most prominent in this work - the radar tracking of the ionization tracks of meteors and soundings with physical probes carried by high-altitude research rockets. The results obtained from these methods have demonstrated that the upper atmosphere is meteorologically active; the prior assumption was that this region was quiescent and neutral.

The present volume is intended both as a report on, and an authoritative reference guide to, the present status of the closely connected fields of Guidance and Control, particularly as related to missiles and space vehicles. Like its predecessor in the series, Volume 8, this volume had its genesis in a Specialist Conference that was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1963. Although in no sense a proceedings of this conference, the present volume uses the same subdivisions of technology, i.e., Attitude Control, Inertial Guidance, Onboard Techniques, Manned Control, Deep Space Guidance and Navigation, Rendezvous, and Landing. To set the stage and to orient those readers who may not have had exposure to the more rapidly growing areas, the Editors have invited certain introductory review articles. They will assist the reader's entry into the subject and into the literature, and in addition they contain information basic to the more complex situations covered in the succeeding papers. In the selection of papers the guiding rule has been the exposure of diverse lines of inquiry, with particular attention given to those current lines of research that appear to be most promising.

A collection of technical papers drawn mainly from the AIAA 3rd Thermophysics Specialist Conference, June 24-26, 1968, subsequently revised for this volume. Topics covered include improved thermal analytical methods and acquisition of necessary data, entry or ablation problems in both earth and planetary spacecraft systems, thermal influence of the on-board orbit injection or descent propulsion system, and the thermal design of a complete system for lunar and Martian vehicles; the thermophysical properties of spacecraft components and of the environment; and the effects of the space environment, real and simulated, upon thermal control materials.

Many requirements must be satisfied in order to achieve a successful spacecraft mission. One very pervasive requirement is that every spacecraft component must be maintained within either operating or survival temperature limits at all times. This is a very difficult requirement to satisfy because of the many boundary *** examples of the type of heat transfer and advanced thermophysical work that is currently being done in response to space mission needs are contained in this volume, such as: discussion on the recent past, status, and future directions of thermophysics, aspects of the critically important area of thermal and visible radiation properties of solid/vacuum interfaces, thermal conductance across joints, thermal conductance concepts to ball bearings, heat transfer analysis, the rapidly developing area of multilayer or "super" insulation, and thermal control devices.
