Railway network operations form complex systems. Any disruption adversely impacts the operations, causing long delays. Many studies investigate the effect of a railway incident;however, a holistic quantification is lacking. This study aims to present an estimation framework for flexible traffic management systems, which can help reduce network delays and enable dispatchers to make better-informed decisions. An incident's impact on the network is estimated by creating a sequence of models, which predict two key variables. Firstly, the incident duration is predicted, which is used to predict the second variable: total delay caused by the incident. Various influencing attributes are examined, such as weather, network and railway-related attributes. Their relationship with the response variables is studied in order to understand the incident's impact. Using incident data from the Danish Railways, machine learning models are estimated. The results show that neural networks outperform other competing models for total delay modelling, resulting in improved prediction by the estimation framework, thus giving higher accuracy than the stand-alone models in the study.

Computers have been used in maintenance for over 20 years, and many users claim to be 'world class' or adopting 'best practice'. However, from the analysis of 725 AMIS maintenance management audits, the results would suggest that over 60% of companies are not satisfied with their system and cannot demonstrate clear benefits from operating these systems. In many instances computer systems have actually created additional work and are driving the management process rather than being a tool supporting the process. This article highlights some of the main reasons for lack of success in the use of CAMMS and suggests a better way forward.

This article discusses the research and development methods used by the British Ineos Team UK whilst competing for the America's cup in yacht racing 2021. This year's rules minimised the time and methods allowed for physical testing, resulting in essential hours of parallel run sailing simulations utilising CAD files, along with computational fluid dynamic modelling run on Simcenter's STAR-CCM+ software. Structural and mechanical feature design of boat components including foils, hulls, masts, rudders and sails were also explored along with weather conditions such as wind, and forces such as drag, lift, yaw, pitch, flow and roll, with feedback gathered from 100 different points on the simulated boat. Virtual-reality headsets and graphics are used alongside a motion platform for sailors to train on the simulated models.
