A concatenated forward error correction (FEC) scheme, which takes a binary code and a Reed-Solomon code as its inner and outer code, respectively, has been adopted as one of the candidate schemes in the next-generation high-speed Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3df). Unlike the other concatenatedscheme used before, to possess a low latency feature, the interleaving depth in the new scheme is very small, such as 2 or 4. In this case, the bit error ratio (BER) performance evaluation at low BER needs mass computer simulation, and the BER analysis proposed for large interleaving depth is no longer suitable. We propose a new BER analysis for a concatenated coding scheme with a small interleaving depth in this work. From the simulation results, the analysis is very accurate at a large range of BER. We also show that, contrary to intuition, a short inner code outperforms a long inner code in concatenated decoding performance, even though the long code performs better without being concatenated with the outer code.

We propose a novel concatenated coding scheme combined Low Density Parity Check(LDPC) code and vertical Bell Labs layered space-time (VBLAST) code to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance for Free-space optical (FSO) communication links with On Off Keying(OOK) modulation. In the scheme, pi-rotation encoding and belief-propagation (BP) decoding algorithm are employed in LDPC code, and minimum mean-square error (MMSE) soft-decision decoding algorithm is used for VBLAST code. Moreover, a joint iterative detection and decoding algorithm of VBLAST code and LDPC code is used to improve the overall link performance. At last, the BER of the proposed scheme over lognormal atmospheric turbulent fading channels is analyzed by using Monte Carlo method. The result shows that the BER of the proposed concatenated coding scheme is much improved than that only use VBLAST code scheme.

A concatenated coding scheme employing an irregular marker code as the inner code is designed to improve the ability of correcting insertions/deletions. In this scheme, bits associated with each marker symbol are allocated to the symbol of the LDPC code non-uniformly. Since the non-binary marker symbol at the irregular position provides reliable forward/backward quantities, significant amount of insertions and deletions can be detected and corrected by the presented method. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has an improved performance with only a very small penalty in coding rate compared with the traditional regular marker code.

In this paper, we propose a robust key extraction approach which consists of concatenated coding scheme and bit masking scheme based oil iris database. The concatenated coding scheme that combines Reed-Solomon code and convolutional code is proposed so that Much longer keys can be extracted from the iris data, while the bit masking scheme is proposed to minimize and randomize the errors occur in the iris codes. making the error pattern more suitable for the codingscheme. This paper is concerned with a class of product codes, referred to as CA-polar-SPC codes, where the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) aided polar (CA-polar) codes are column component codes and single parity-check (SPC) codes are row component codes. With the help of SPCs, a decodingscheme is proposed to improve the performance of CA-polar codes at the expense of only a minor increase in decoding complexity and latency. Distinguished from the conventional iterative decoding of product codes, the proposed decoding outputs immediately the successfully decoded columns without waiting for the reception of the entire product block. Only those unsuccessfully decoded columns are further decoded with updated messages from the row decoder by treating the successfully decoded columns as determined messages instead of soft messages. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed CA-polar-SPC code outperforms the underlying CA-polar code over binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (Bi-AWGN) channels with only a minor increase in decoding latency.
