The optimal power flow problem is nonconvex, and a convex relaxation has been proposed to solve it. We prove that the relaxation is exact, if there are no upper bounds on the voltage, and any one of some conditions holds. One of these conditions requires that there is no reverse real power flow, and that the resistance to reactance ratio is non-decreasing as transmission lines spread out from the substation to the branch buses. This condition is likely to hold if there are no distributed generators. Besides, avoiding reverse real power flow can be used as rule of thumb for placing distributed generators.

In this paper, a novel optimization algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is proposed for solving the non-convex non-linear economic dispatch (ED) problem in a system integrated with combined heat and power. In the proposed method, which is known as Advanced Modified PSO (AMPSO), one third of the population is updated based on conventional PSO, and the remaining members are updated randomly based on the boundaries of variables. In order to improve the efficiency of the algorithm, the required coefficients were estimated by the Taguchi method. The optimization problem is the nonlinear non-convex ED in which the effects of steam valves and the power loss have been included. The proposed algorithm is applied on different systems, and the results are compared with those of some well-regarded methods developed by other researchers. The results show the superiority of the proposed AMPSO in comparison to other methods. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

An integrated two-level distributed dispatch for interconnected microgrids considering unit commitment and transmission loss

Interconnected microgrids or a microgrid cluster (MGC) can enable mutual power support among microgrids and can improve the utilization of renewable energy sources. However, most of the distributed optimization focuses only on day-ahead or day-in dispatch, and few studies have attempted to study the integrated two-level distributed optimization. On the basis of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), this paper describes an efficient two-level distributed algorithm framework to solve multi-area ED problems in MGC considering unit commitment and transmission loss. Specifically, to overcome the non-convexity, a choice and comparison approach is introduced to cooperate with power-based ADMM for searching feasible binary variables in the first level, i.e., day-ahead dispatch. Voltage-based ADMM is adopted to obtain the relevant intra-day scheduling plan considering tie-line transmission loss among different areas in the second level. Moreover, a spinning reserve-based chance-constrained programming procedure is added to address uncertainty factors such as renewable energy fluctuations and load forecasting errors in isolated microgrids. Finally, a consensus-based cost allocation is proposed to fairly clear the expenses among microgrids. A case study with several networked microgrids is tested to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

In this work we consider feature selection for two-class linear models, a challenging task arising in several real-world applications. Given an unknown functional dependency that assigns a given input to the class to which it belongs, and that can be modelled by a linear machine, we aim to find the relevant features of the input space, namely we aim to detect the smallest number of input variables while granting no loss in classification accuracy. Our main motivation lies in the fact that the detection of the relevant features provides a better understanding of the underlying phenomenon, and this can be of great interest in important fields such as medicine and biology. Feature selection involves two competing objectives: the prediction capability (to be maximized) of the linear classifier and the number of features (to be minimized) employed by the classifier. In order to take into account both the objectives, we propose a feature selection strategy based on the combination of support vector machines (for obtaining good classifiers) with a concave optimization approach (for finding sparse solutions). We report results of an extensive computational experience showing the efficiency of the proposed methodology.

With the development of information and communications technology (ICT) and inundation of sensing devices, the control of smart grid is undergoing a paradigm shift from centralised/decentralised to a more distributed nature allowing each distributed generator to receive information from sensors at distant buses. In such systems, there is much interdependency between various power, control and communication parameters due to which the control of parameters from one domain gets affected by other. The central idea of this study is to develop a generic, hybrid and customised framework to jointly model the multi-disciplinary variables and their interactions present in the smart grid and to develop controllers in an adaptive manner to ensure better control of physical variables such as voltage irrespective of the changes in operating point brought about by changes in physical/cyber parameters. Hence, the different operating conditions of the power system have been modelled as multiple subsystems of a hybrid switching system and controller design is carried out by solving the optimisation formulations developed for delay-free and delay-existent cases using the theory of common Lyapunov function. The optimisation is carried out using the block coordinate descent methodology by converting the non-convex formulation into a series of convex problems to obtain a solution.

Earlier the authors proved the equivalence of a sustainable exploitation problem for a system of renewable resources and a certain mathematical program. In this paper we study the properties of a map describing the dependence of the state vector of the system on the control. In the particular case of a structured population described by the binary Leslie model, conditions for the objective function are characterized under which there are optimal controls preserving all structural divisions of the system. In this case, we use the notion of local irreducibility, which generalizes the classical notion of map irreducibility.

Low sidelobe waveform design with constant modulus constraint for high-frequency radar

This article designs waveform in fast-time domain to optimise high-frequency radar performances embedded in the co-channel interference and coloured noise. Considering the whitening filter is applied for fast-time processing, a novel objective function accounting for both signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and integrated range sidelobe level (IRSL) is introduced and the constant modulus constraint is forced on the probing waveform. An iterative algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is presented, resolving such non-convex quartic optimisation problem with a polynomial-time computational complexity. In each iteration, two quadratic problems are presented, with the closed-form solutions given. Finally, the authors evaluate the effectiveness of the designed waveform in terms of the range-Doppler processing result, SINR, IRSL and power spectrum.

In this paper, we study how to save energy in Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), which is introduced to the next generation cellular systems. A HetNet based cellular system consists of a mix of macrocells and low power nodes, such as picocells, femtocells and relays, making the systematic power controlling more complex than the conventional ones. The major difficulty for power control in HetNets is the mutual interference among cells with different transmission power. So interference management is very important for the next generation cellular networks. We try to minimize the total power consumption while guaranteeing users' rate requirements, to save energy and keep the user's QoS from degenerating. Our general problem formulation leads to a nonconvex optimization problem which is generally hard to solve. We derive the lower bound of user's achievable rates with given power consumption and develop an efficient iterative algorithm to deal with the intractable optimization task. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm performs well for practical wireless scenarios.

In this paper, we study the optimal transmitter beamforming design in a coordinated multicell multicast network under the wiretap channel model, where each cell serves a group of users and a single-antenna eavesdropper tries to overhear the confidential information. We study the problem of finding the optimal beamforming strategy at each base station to minimize the total transmit power of the multicell network while guaranteeing secrecy and QoS requirements of each user. The resulting non-convex optimization problem is solved through a sequence of convex semi-definite relaxations. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated via numerical simulations.
