design thinking (DT) is a robust framework to creatively identify and solve various human problems. It offers a systematic solution to train engineering students in critical and creative thinking to solve complex engineering problems. The DT method is integrated with the conceive-design-implement-operate (CDIO) approach with the objective of developing problem-solving skillset amongst engineering students. This paper presents the implementation of CDIO-DT towards achieving the program outcome related to environment and sustainability (PO7) for the first year civil engineering students taking an introductory course on Civil Engineering Appreciation (ECM414). Problem-based learning (PBL) was used as a teaching and learning method in the course where the students participated in an innovation competition. Performance criteria matrices were used to evaluate the project report, program outcome attainment, and the application of CDIO-DT approach. Survey conducted indicates that students demonstrated positive perceptions on their knowledge and understanding of the environment and sustainability elements using the CDIO-DT approach. The finding is supported by the true attainment of PO7 in the course assessment. It can be concluded that the CDIO-DT approach is a good method to improve the cognitive learning domains in developing student attributes towards the understanding of complex engineering problem-solving in societal and environmental contexts. Overall, from a continual quality improvement (CQI) perspective this study is important to improve, develop and evaluate the teaching and learning methods adopted for effective engineering education.

Under the background of engineering education professional certification, the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) education concept of "output-oriented" has been paid more and more attention. The traditional experimental teaching of programming course often focuses on the teaching of theoretical knowledge, and lacks the cultivation of students' practical ability and innovative spirit. Engineering education puts forward new requirements for the teaching mode of program design course. The experimental teaching of programming courses requires further reform and innovation to cultivate high-quality technical engineering talents with good social responsibility, teamwork ability, and innovative thinking ability. Guided by the theory of engineering education combined with the educational philosophy of conceive-design-implement-operate (CDIO) and OBE, this paper carried out the reform of experimental teaching of programming course among students majoring in computer science and technology and information security. This teaching reform aimed to better cultivate students' practical ability, innovation ability, and knowledge-integrated application ability, considering the course concept, course design, course implementation, and course operation, and exploring the practice of teaching process reconfiguration, teaching content organization, and teaching method integration. This multi-integration experimental teaching reform was found to fully mobilize students' learning enthusiasm, tap into students' potential, greatly improve students' comprehensive practical ability, effectively achieve course goals, and lay a solid foundation for subsequent professional course learning. This teaching mode has been practically applied in current experimental teaching and is widely recognized by students, providing a reference for improving teaching quality.

At present, a lack of practical experience for engineering is a universal problem among college students. The traditional teaching methods for students' practical activities have some disadvantages that they are far from meeting the demand of cultivation of talents with application and innovation ability. In order to improve the students' engineering practice ability and create an environment of engineering practice for students, the engineering experience course based on CDIO is necessary, so is to establish the basic framework of engineering science, professional knowledge and engineering ability for students. On the basis of the new experimental course system based on CDIO, Department of electronic information, Shanghai University of Engineering Science made progress on the reform and practice of teaching content, means of examine in engineering project comprehensive experiment course. It undoubtedly significant to improve students' creativity as well as engineering practice abilities.
