In this paper, we have presented an RTOS-based design and validation methodology for embedded systems. The heart of our methodology is the use of an RTOS simulation model from the very early stage of the system design, which enables accurate system specification, efficient validation, and smooth implementation. We also showed a case study in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology. Up to now, we have developed a co-simulation framework and a simulation model of RTOS (Honda et al.,2004) which are key components to realize the proposed methodology. Currently we are working towards two directions. One is to improve the timing accuracy of co-simulation, and the other is to support multiprocessor embedded systems.

The Chained Lin-Kernighan algorithm (CLK) is one of the best heuristics to solve traveling salesman problems (TSP). In this paper a distributed algorithm is proposed, were nodes in a network locally optimize TSP instances by using the CLK algorithm. We show that the distributed variant finds better tours compared to the original CLK given the same total amount of computation time. Hence, the cooperation of the processes in the distributed algorithm increases the effectiveness of the approach beyond the maximally achievable reduction in computation time due to parallelization. For example, for TSP instance fl3795, the original CLK got stuck in local optima in each of 10 runs, whereas the distributed algorithm found optimal tours in each run requiring less than 10 CPU minutes per node on average in an 8 node setup.

Transaction performs lock and unlocking operations on the data items required in its execution. These operations on the data items are important in order to maintain consistency of the database as the data may be accessed by concurrently executing transactions. Designing locking and unlocking mechanism on the data items it involves fine tuning which involves the following factors a) level of granularity b) appropriate version to be locked c) supporting the compatibility mode. In this paper, two locking protocols are covered namely Multi version and Multi granularity locking protocol. The Multiple granularity locking protocol specify at which level locks can be applied, if the lock is applied on exact level of database, then definitely system performance can be improved and basically explore how can be increase the concurrency of MGL locking protocol by considering suitable example. An efficient locking technique is proposed by integrating multi version with multiple granularity in the hierarchical structure. This allows several requesting transactions to be executed in parallel by serving them an appropriate version to read while the write operation of some other transaction is in progress.

A discussion is presented of the use of the computer system accounting structure to control software change, provide phased software testing, and handle software and data files in parallel with the software life-cycle. The US Food and Drug Administration, as the federal regulating body for the industry, directly influences software maintenance practices and procedures. Traceability to back versions of the software, as well as software validation, is required. Three categories of testing are discussed: systems testing (for designed functionality), user acceptance testing (for validation), and verification testing (for consistent operation). Testing is introduced into the life cycle according to established procedures. Software and data integrity is ensured throughout the life cycle through strictly controlled user access and file management using the operating system accounting structure.< >

Virtualization is a promising technology that has attracted much attention, particularly in the grid community. Recent advances using virtualization technologies enable multiplexing the physical resources by means of virtual machines resulting in better resource utilization. We have proposed virtual cluster development environment (VCDE) to dynamically form virtual cluster on demand providing the grid execution environment using Virtual machines. The formation of a grid environment to execute any MPI or sequential application has been automated by VCDE. The user can simply submit the job along with the requirements of hardware and software needed for the execution. The VCDE provides easy access to grid by reducing the burden of GT installation and other configurations. It is important to note that there is no human intervention in the preparation of virtual cluster as well as the grid environment. The Proposed VCDE uses virtualization technologies and it helps the user to make use of grid as easy as possible.

Modern web-based applications are often built as multi-tier architecture using persistence middleware. Middleware technology providers recommend the use of Optimistic Concurrency Control (OCC) mechanism to avoid the risk of blocked resources. However, most vendors of relational database management systems implement only locking schemes for concurrency control. As consequence a kind of OCC has to be implemented at client or middleware side. A simple Row Version Verification (RVV) mechanism has been proposed to implement an OCC at client side. The implementation of RVV depends on the underlying database management system and the specifics of the middleware. For performance reasons the middleware uses buffers (cache) of its own to avoid network traffic and possible disk I/O. This caching however complicates the use of RVV because the data in the middleware cache may be stale (outdated). We investigate various data access technologies, including the new Java Persistence API (JPA) and Microsoft's LINQ technologies for their ability to use the RVV programming discipline. The use of persistence middleware that tries to relieve the programmer from the low level transaction programming turns out to even complicate the situation in some cases. Programmed examples show how to use SQL data access patterns to solve the problem.

The authors have designed an object-oriented architecture for a family of portable, distributed operating systems. The implementation of an experimental prototype called Lipto is underway. Lipto's architecture facilities the dynamic composition of distributed services and applications from a set of building blocks or modules. Their approach is based on two fundamental premises. First, a modern operating system should allow applications to dynamically compose higher-level services from a set of building blocks (modules); it should further support the integration of system, third-party, and application provided modules. The second premise reads that a modern operating system must be readily portable across a variety of hardware architectures.< >

The Radon transform (RT) is a widely studied algorithm used to perform image pattern extraction in fields such as computer graphics, medical imagery, and avionics. Real time implementation of the discrete RT (DRT) is extremely difficult due to its use of complex trigonometric functions and O(N/sup 3/) time complexity, making its use in video applications difficult. A O(N/sup 2/lgN) approximate discrete (ADRT) has been presented in literature (Brady, 1998) that allows highly parallel computation. This paper presents an architecture that uses the ADRT to create a computation architecture known as the xADRT. Performance analysis indicates that it can achieve a refresh rate of 10 frames per second for use in real time image processing applications.

In recent years automatic ontology population (OP) from texts has emerged as a new field of application for knowledge acquisition techniques. In OP, the instances of an ontology classes will be extracted from text and added under the ontology concepts. On the other hand, semantic annotation which is a key task in moving toward semantic Web tries to tag instance data in a text by their corresponding ontology classes; so the ontology population activity accompanies generating semantic annotations usually. In this paper we introduce a cross-lingual population/annotation system called POPTA which annotates Persian texts according to an English lexicalized ontology and populates the English ontology according to the input Persian texts. It exploits a hybrid approach, a combination of statistical and pattern-based methods as well as techniques founded on the Web and search engines and a novel method of resolving translation ambiguities. POPTA also uses Wikipedia as a vast natural language encyclopedia to extract new instances to populate the input ontology.
