Performance Amelioration of Edge Detection Algorithms Using concurrent programming

Edge detection is a terminology that aims at identifying points in a digital image at which the image brightness changes sharply or more formally has discontinuities. The purpose of detecting sharp changes in image brightness is to capture changes such as discontinuities in depth, discontinuities in surface orientation, changes in material properties and variations in scene illumination. The basic principles of edge detection are applying projection processing, perform differentiation, and correct the differential waveform. The different edge detection techniques are first order derivative such as Sobel edge detector, second order derivative such as Laplacian of Gaussian and optimal edge detection called as canny edge detection. The classical edge detectors are simple, detects thick lines but they are sensitive to noise and inaccurate. The Laplacian of Gaussian finds the correct places of edges but malfunctions at corners, curves where the gray level intensity function varies. The canny edge detector improves signal to noise ratio, uses probability to find the error rate, better detection especially in noise conditions but its complex and time consuming. The algorithms are implemented sequentially using high level languages and tools such C, C++, and MATLAB, etc. These languages exploit the CPU alone, which makes the execution of the algorithm slower. In the proposed system, the algorithm will be implemented in OpenCL, a concurrent programming framework which exploits the parallelism that is inherently present in the algorithm. Using the OpenCL framework, the CPU and GPU is parallelized, thus making the algorithm run faster and reducing the running time of the algorithm. This minimizes the overhead and makes the sobel, laplace and canny to run faster thereby achieving 25x, 39x and 50x higher throughput.

Teaching concurrent and parallel programming by patterns: An interactive ICT approach

The use of programming patterns is considered to be a conceptual aid for programmers for developing understandable and testable concurrent and parallel code which is not only well built but also safe. By using programming patterns and their implementations as computer programs, difficult new concepts can be smoothly taught in lectures to students who before trying this teaching approach would have been reluctant to enroll on Parallel and concurrent programming courses. The approach presented in this paper consists in changing the traditional programming teaching and learning model to one where students are first introduced to syntactical constructs through selected introductory program code-patterns. In the theory lessons that follow, through the use of laptops with multi-core processors and access to the Virtual Campus services of our university, the students are easily able to implement and master the new concepts as they are taught. This teaching experiment was implemented to teach a concurrent and real-time programming course which is part of the computer engineering (CE) degree and taught during the third semester of the CE curriculum. Evaluation of the students' academic performance when they had been taught with this approach revealed a 20.6% improvement in the students' end-of-course grades. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. Reengineering the SLEEP Simulator in a concurrent and Distributed programming Course

This article presents laboratory exercises and project assignments developed to teach concepts of concurrent and distributed programming in Java. The exercises and assignments cover important topics determined after an analysis of topics that are often taught in different universities. During the exercises, students reengineer the general purpose discrete event simulator named SLEEP (Simulation, Logic, Execution, prEsentation, Physics). A multilayer organization of the SLEEP simulator enables coverage of the important topics in a coherent manner. In order to support parallel execution in SLEEP students start to reengineer the simulator layers with an exercise related to concurrent programming, followed by two exercises related to distributed programming, and finish with an exercise related to grid computing. The exercises follow the principles of error management training and teach students what common errors are and how to overcome them. The article also describes a practical experience with the use of SLEEP on a concurrent and distributed programming course over a 3-year period. Facile is a symmetric integration of concurrent and functional programming. The language supports both function and process abstraction. Functions may be defined and used within processes, and processes can be dynamically created during expression evaluation. In this work we present two different descriptions of the operational semantics of Facile. First, we develop a structural operational semantics for a small core subset of Facile using a labeled transition system. Such a semantics is useful for reasoning about the operational behavior of Facile programs. We then provide an abstract model of implementation for Facile: theconcurrent and Functional Abstract Machine (C-FAM). The C-FAM executes concurrent processes evaluating functional expressions. The implementation semantics includes compilation rules from Facile to C-FAM instructions and execution rules for the abstract machine. This level of semantic description is suitable for those interested in implementations.

It seems that education is working fine, especially in several good and traditional Universities around the world. Nokia was also doing very well in a business world until clients' needs change. Are we academics really offering what the students and the labor market need and demand? We have offered the same product for decades, but we haven't realize that the client is different and is demanding another product. Sometimes, we may have the feeling that our students are beyond this world when they are connected in the internet. Some say that the new generation is not using technology in a properly way to study;however are academics using it better? We are not using the new generation's language to communicate with students and to transfer knowledge. Games and competitions is the "language of the new generation" and it may promote a desired long-term learning experience we academics always wished. This paper describes the use of gamification as a tool to support the lectures of concurrent and distributed subjects, for undergraduate students of computer science course. In the game students should create and optimize the production line of a specific product. In the programming class, students should create and balance the same production line to beat competitors. Students have to use concepts of distributed programming and concurrency, and create strategies to organize the threads (production line) in order to be more efficient than the other competitors. The best production lines sell more and get more benefits. This paper discusses the preliminary results obtained from a survey of learning inhibits, which were applied before and after doing the course activity. The study compares the results obtained in both surveys and indicate that with the use of gamification to support class activities the learning inhibits tend to reduce at same time that transversal competences are stimulate on students. The importance of concurrent and distributed programming is increasing on Computer Science curricula. This exploratory research identifies additional notions required by the official topics of "Parallel and concurrent programming" course, taught at the University of Costa Rica. This paper characterizes previous knowledge that students had about these notions and the extracurricular effort that they made to overcome the lack of notions. Findings show that students were able to overcome the lack of notions at expense of more extracurricular effort. Exploratory evidence indicates that students' election of professors in previous courses influenced their performance and extracurricular effort in the parallel programming course.

Understanding concurrent and parallel programming can be a very hard task on first contact by students. This paper describes the development and experimental results of the FSP2JAVA tool. The proposed method starts from concurrent systems modeling through Finite State Processes (FSP). After that, the method includes an automatic code generation from the model. This goal is achieved by a domain-specific language compiler which translates from the FSP model to Java code. The FSP2JAVA tool is available for free download in the github site. We argue that this tool helps in teaching concurrent systems, since it abstracts all complex languages concern and encourages the student to be focused at the fundamental concepts of modeling and analysis.

An effective teaching and learning in concurrent and parallel programming needs the presentation of short excerpts of code to students in a selected programming language during lectures. This is sometimes necessary to make understandable complicate syntactical constructs. Traditionally, these codes have been presented by the teacher to the students on a blackboard, with slides or by means any projection facilities, together with an oral description of their operation and significance. Teachers try to explain those syntactical constructs with more or less success and students do not usually test program code during lectures, nor can do any modifications to the programs, which are helpful in order to master difficult concepts of parallel programming and Concurrency. In the best possible scenario, students will carry out any tests on the real code of an example presented in lectures during practical lessons at the lab. Nevertheless, without a clear illustration of their actual behavior in a real computer program, any new concepts of concurrent constructs taught in lectures will remain fuzzy and prone to be forgotten. The presented approach consists of changing the traditional teaching and learning model of parallel programming into another where students will be equipped with multicore processors inside their laptops, which in addition to Virtual Campus services will serve to put into practice any programming code that illustrates a programming concept the minute it is presented during any lecture by the teacher to the class.

The use of key parallel-programming patterns has proved to be extremely helpful for mastering difficult concurrent and parallel programming concepts and the associated syntactical constructs. The method suggested here consists of a substantial change of more traditional teaching and learning approaches to teach programming According to our approach, students are first introduced to concurrency problems through a selected set of preliminar program code-patterns. Each pattern also has a series of tests with selected samples to enable students to discover the most common cases that cause problems and then the solutions to be applied. In addition, this paper presents the results obtained from an informal assessment realized by the students of a course on concurrent and real-time programming that belongs to the computer engineering (CE) degree. The obtained results show that students feel now to be more actively involved in lectures, practical lessons, and thus students make better use of their time and gain a better understanding of concurrency topics that would not have been considered possible before the proposed method was implemented at our University.
