Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and blockchain are two terms that have been used interchangeably for the longest of time ever since the concept of the bitcoin cryptocurrency system was introduced by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. DLT can be thought of as an umbrella term that encompasses the blockchain and other type of distributed ledgers. It is a decentralized, permisionless, distributed database where each participant maintains its own copy of the distributed ledger and the records are distributed as a chain of blocks across a peer-to-peer network. This implies that a replicated database is maintained and it does not rely on a single party or an intermediary for its operation. This also happens to be the most ground breaking feature of this technology. Bitcoin blockchain can be understood as the first fully functional DLT that exists. Blockchain is rapidly evolving as the next disruptive innovation in secure connectivity, with the potential to fundamentally alter how we work and live in the twenty-first century. The key components of this technology include the miner, the consensus protocols, hashing and an asymmetric cryptography system to encrypt the data through the use of the public and the private key. All transaction in the blockchain is recorded in the form of chain of blocks. Each block contains a unique header which is mathematically and cryptographically computed and to this feature is attributed the immutable nature of the blockchain. This computed hash commits to the header of the previous block, storing the contents of the block in the form of a hash function. All the transactions in the blockchain are recorded in a block that contains a unique header which is cryptographically computed and this attributes to the immutability of the blockchain. This computed hash is stored in the header of the next block. We study the bounded consensus tracking problem for the heterogeneous multiagent system composed of single- and double-integrator agents in the presence of diverse communication and input delays. The objective is to ensure bounded tracking when only a portion of agents has access to the desired trajectory while agents interact with each other through a directed communication network. To achieve this goal, we propose a protocol consisting of a consensus-based trajectory estimator followed by a controller tracking the estimated trajectory for each agent. Though the agents involved in the mission are heterogeneous, the estimators of all the agents are designed as coupled single integrators to provide estimates of the acceleration, velocity, and position along the desired trajectory. The coupled single-integrator estimator followed by the tracking controller strategy leads to a decoupling whereby the allowable estimator gains for an agent depend only on its communication delays and its controller gains depend only on its input delay. The tracking errors remain bounded even if the desired acceleration is unknown to all the agents. Simulation results are carried out to validate the proposed consensus tracking algorithm.

In islanded microgrids, the existence of nonlinear electric loads may cause voltage distortion and affect the performance of power quality sensitive equipment. Thanks to the prevalent utilization of interfacing power electronic devices and information/communication technologies, distributed generators can be employed as compensators to enhance the power quality on consumer side. However, conventional centralized control is facing obstacles because of the distributed fashion of generation and consumption. Accordingly, this paper proposes a consensus algorithm based distributed hierarchical control to realize voltage harmonic compensation and accurate current sharing in multi-bus islanded microgrids. Low order harmonic components are considered as examples in this paper. Harmonic current sharing is also realized among distributed generators by applying the proposed methods. Plug-and-play capability is demonstrated for flexible operation. The proposed method is based on proper analysis and modeling of the system.

In the intricate dance of multi-agent systems, achieving average consensus is not just vital–it is the backbone of their functionality. In conventional average consensus algorithms, all agents reach an agreement by individual calculations and sharing information with their respective neighbors. Nevertheless, the information interactions that occur in the communication network may make sensitive information be revealed. In this paper, we develop a new privacy-preserving average consensus method on unbalanced directed networks. Specifically, we ensure privacy preservation by carefully embedding randomness in mixing weights to confuse communications and introducing an extra auxiliary parameter to mask the state-updated rule in initial several iterations. In parallel, we exploit the intrinsic robustness of consensus dynamics to guarantee that the average consensus is precisely achieved. Theoretical results demonstrate that the designed algorithms can converge linearly to the exact average consensus value and can guarantee privacy preservation of agents against both honest-but-curious and eavesdropping attacks. © 2023, CC BY.

The exponential growth in connected devices with Internet-of-Things (IoT) and next-generation wireless networks requires more advanced and dynamic spectrum access mechanisms. Blockchain-based approaches to Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) seem efficient and robust due to their inherited characteristics such as decentralization, immutability, and transparency. However, conventional consensus mechanisms used in blockchain networks are expensive to be used due to the cost, processing, and energy constraints. Moreover, addressing spectrum violations (i.e., unauthorized access to the spectrum) is not well-discussed in most blockchain-based DSA systems in the literature. In this work, we propose a newly tailored energy-efficient consensus mechanism called "Distributed-Proof-of-Sense (DPoS)" that is specially designed to enable DSA and detect spectrum violations. The proposed consensus algorithm motivates blockchain miners to perform spectrum sensing, which leads to the collection of a full spectrum of sensing data. An elliptic curve cryptography-based zero-knowledge proof is used as the core of the proposed mechanism. We use MATLAB simulations to analyze the performance of the consensus mechanism and implement several consensus algorithms in a microprocessor to highlight the benefits of adopting the proposed system.

Robust Weighted-Average Continuous-Time consensus With Communication Time Delay

Achieving consensus behavior robust to time delay in multiagent systems has attracted much attention. This work is concerned with optimizing the convergence rate of the consensus algorithm in such systems with time delays. Previous approaches optimize either the robustness to time delay or the convergence rate separately, while imposing a limit on the other. Eigenratio optimization is another method, which does not necessarily result in a unique set of weights. Here, the problem is treated in its general form as a multiobjective optimization problem. It is shown that the corresponding Pareto frontier depends solely on the optimal condition number of the Laplacian, and it includes the optimal answer of previously adopted approaches as special cases. A notion of optimal consensusability is then defined, which allows a particular point on the Pareto Frontier with special properties to be identified. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be convex, as is solved by reformulating it as a standard semidefinite programming problem. The optimal weights for individual topologies, clique lifted graphs, and different types of subgraphs are provided, where for the latter, the optimal weights have shown to be independent of the rest of topology. Through numerical simulations, the tradeoff between robustness and convergence rate is demonstrated.

Hybrid Dynamical Control for Discharging Rate consensus in AC-Bus Microgrids

In this letter, a robust distributed hybrid algorithm is proposed for the primary and secondary control loops of an island AC-bus microgrid to provide large-signal stability of the complete system. A secondary control loop is designed from droop control and multi-agent systems theory to ensure that the State Of Charge (SOC) of the batteries in discharging mode converges to a consensus. Furthermore, this distributed strategy ensures robustness with respect to any plug-and-play event or communication failure. The DC-AC power converter of each battery in discharging mode is controlled in the primary loop by using hybrid dynamical system theory, which considers non-trivial issues in the model (switching and affine terms) and in the signals (constraints in the dwell time). A suited selection of gains allows using singular perturbation analysis to provide large-signal stability properties for the complete nonlinear model.

This paper proposes a formation control algorithm based on a flocking approach to coordinate a team of quadro-tors. A flock formation control algorithm aims to respect for Reynolds rules (cohesion, alignment and separation) whereas maintaining a formation shape of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) team defined a priori. In the proposed algorithm, the navigation approach for flocking algorithm presented by Olfati-Saber is reformulated for keeping a predefined formation shape, propagating the desired formation in the network using a distributed consensus algorithm, starting from a virtual leader. The proposal is validated using a Model-in-the-Loop (MiL) simulation composed by the linear models of quadrotors and the position, altitude and attitude proportional-derivative controllers. The results obtained were presented and analysed based on graphic resources and metrics for formation control and flocking behaviour algorithms.

Distributed Economic Dispatch algorithms of Microgrids Integrating Grid-Connected and Isolated Modes

The economic dispatch problem(EDP) of microgrids operating in both grid-connected and isolated modes within an energy internet framework is addressed in this paper. The multi-agent leader-following consensus algorithm is employed to address the EDP of microgrids in grid-connected mode, while the push-pull algorithm with a fixed step size is introduced for the isolated mode. The proposed algorithm of isolated mode is proven to converge to the optimum when the interaction digraph of microgrids is strongly connected. A unified algorithmic framework is proposed to handle the two modes of operation of microgrids simultaneously, enabling our algorithm to achieve optimal power allocation and maintain the balance between power supply and demand in any mode and any mode switching. Due to the push-pull structure of the algorithm and the use of fixed step size,the proposed algorithm can better handle the case of unbalanced graphs, and the convergence speed is improved. It is documented that when the transmission topology is strongly connected and there is bi-directional communication between the energy router and its neighbors, the proposed algorithm in composite mode achieves economic dispatch even with arbitrary mode ***, we demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our algorithm through numerical simulations.
