A formal consensus-based distributed monitoring approach for mobile IoT networks

Internet of Things (IoT) represent a significant area of network research due to the many opportunities derived from the problematics and applications. The most recurring problematics are the mobility, the availability and also the limited resources. A well-known interest in networks and therefore in IoT is to monitor properties of the network and nodes [1, 2]. The problematics can have a significant impact on the monitoring efforts. Mobility and availability can create incomplete results for the monitoring. It can also represent a challenge to monitor distributed properties. The literature states that accuracy is not always reliable and difficult to achieve due to dynamic properties of the IoT in particular with M2M communications and mobile devices. Therefore we propose a distributed monitoring architecture that relies on multiple points of observation. It provides a consensus mechanism that allows it to aggregate and provides a more meaningful and accurate result. We support our proposal with numerous mathematical definitions that model local results for a single node and global results for the network. Finally, we evaluate our architecture with an emulator that relies on AWS, NS3, and Docker with varying number of nodes, network size, network density, speed, mobility algorithms and timeouts. Blockchain-based payment systems utilize an append-only log of transactions whose correctness can be verified by any observer. Classically, verification costs grow linearly in either the number of transactions or blocks in the blockchain (often both). Incrementally Verifiable Computation (IVC) can be used to enable constant-time verification, but generating the necessary proofs is expensive. We introduce the notion of Proof of Necessary Work (PoNW), in which proof generation is an integral part of the proof-of-work used in Nakamoto consensus, producing proofs using energy that would otherwise be wasted. We implement and benchmark a prototype of our system, enabling stateless clients to verify the entire blockchain history in about 40 milliseconds.

Consider a network where each agent has a private composite function (e.g. the sum of a smooth and a non-smooth function). The problem we address here is to find a minimizer of the aggregate cost (the sum of the agents functions) in a distributed manner. In this paper, we combine recent results on primal-dual optimization and coordinate descent to propose an asynchronous distributed algorithm for composite optimization.

Sensor networks aim at monitoring events and phenomena occurring in their environment and providing useful information to one or several end users. When a global knowledge of sensed data is needed, techniques from data gathering, statistical estimation and parametric modeling can be used. While the two first methods require respectively a large amount of energy and a knowledge of statistical dependencies between measurements, a new simple algorithm for fitting a parametric model to sensed data is proposed in this article. The novelty and advantages of this approach stands in its intrinsic robustness to packet losses and asynchronous data exchanges. Moreover, this algorithm is intituively efficient as it uses the broadcasting nature of the wireless medium.

Multi-robots systems exploiting sensor network capabilities can be successfully employed to cope with several tasks, including coverage, surveillance, target tracking, and foraging, in partially known environments subject to dynamical changes. In this paper we define a reward collection problem, where both the positions and the values of the rewards change with time. We propose a distributed actor-critic method to solve the problem, establish its convergence, and demonstrate its adaptation capabilities. Our analysis leverages ideas from actor-critic methods and consensus algorithms.

In this paper, we introduce a programmable particle swarm evolving on a sphere called swarm on sphere system. This model is a polynomial dynamical system obtained from a consensus algorithm that exhibits a rich set of synchronous behaviors with close connections to the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators, coalition formation in social networks, small-words, integer programming problems such as max-cut, and networks of self-synchronous oscillators with applications to synthetic biology. We prove the generalized Kuramoto model can be obtained as a special case of this model in dimension two. Moreover, we provide formal stability analysis of aligned, bipolar, and dispersed synchronous modes of the system. As a byproduct of this stability analysis, we obtain simple algorithms for programming the weights of the swarm enabling it to exhibit various desired patterns of synchrony. Simulation results are provided that demonstrate 3-D in-phase synchrony, coalition formation for interacting agents with mixed-sign couplings, and dispersal behavior with spatial order.

The paper considers the problem of performing distributed particle filtering in intermittently connected networks with nonlinear state dynamics. In the context of large, geographically-distributed sensor networks, communication delays affect the convergence of the consensus algorithms used to derive the global state estimate from local estimates. We propose a non-linear fusion rule that relaxes the condition of requiring convergence of the consensus step between two successive iterations of the localized particle filters, thereby, allowing the consensus step to catch up with the localized filters in case of communication delays. Our Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the ability of the modified consensus/fusion based distributed implementation of the particle filter (MCF/DPF) to successfully handle intermittence in the network connectivity.

With the purpose of enabling a low-carbon future, power systems worldwide are undergoing major transformations. These developments require new advanced control and operation approaches to ensure a stable and efficient system operation. Distributed consensus-based algorithms are a promising option to provide the necessary flexibility and scalability to cope with these challenges and have, thus, been widely investigated in the literature. Yet, most available results are limited to scenarios with reduced-order models and ideal communication. Motivated by this, we perform a case study using a detailed dynamic model of the well-known Nordic test system equipped with a consensus-based distributed secondary frequency controller. Our main objectives are to analyse the robustness of the closed-loop system with respect to unmodelled (voltage and higher-order generator) dynamics as well as communication delays. To facilitate the later property, we employ robust-stability conditions in the control design. Then, the performance of the proposed controller is assessed through detailed dynamic simulations covering several disturbances leading to large frequency and voltage excursions.

Sharding is a way to solving the scalability problem in the blockchain. The sharding method uses traditional consensus algorithms, such as PBFT. In traditional consensus algorithms, network nodes can register blocks by working together. In these algorithms, an important issue is how to motivate group nodes to participate in the consensus algorithm so as not to cause collusion or free-riding. In this paper, we first examine the previous solutions that try to solve the incentive mechanism in sharding blockchain and show that these solutions do not consider the leader's role in involving other nodes in the consensus algorithm. By the game theory, we show that the leader for increasing his benefit prevents some nodes from participating in the consensus algorithm, which creates collusion. We propose a solution to motivate group nodes in the sharding method and by the game theory prove that this solution is incentive compatible and also does not causes any collusion.

With the development of education informatization in China, the student profiles are becoming digitized. However, currently different digital profiles of a student are still stored dispersedly in multiple databases, which results in information silos and vulnerability to security and privacy threats. Aiming at these deficiencies, this paper proposes a secure storage and sharing scheme of student digital profile based on blockchain technology. With the characteristics of decentralization, security, credibility, and tamper-resistance of the blockchain, the consensus of network nodes is achieved through the Delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (DBFT) protocol, and the sharing of student digital profile information is achieved through the access control mechanism. The public information of educational digital information is preserved on the blockchain, and the student profiles are encrypted and stored in a database or cloud, which facilitates the effective storage of personal digital profiles and information sharing among various systems. The proposed scheme utilizes blockchain technology for decentralized and tamper-proof management, and provides a solution to information silos and security issues of student digital profiles.
