Smart vehicles, through dedicated sensors, can gather and announce information about road traffic events. This information can be exploited to improve the transportation system. However, with the ubiquity of cyber-attacks, it is challenging to safely store and share event messages collected through Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs). Therefore, in this work, we leverage blockchain technology capability to establish a decentralized, transparent and robust database to build, in turn, a robust and secure traffic event management protocol. We adapt the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to this context while testing network configurations via NS-3. The performance of the blockchain is evaluated and its reliability in the presence of attackers (malicious vehicles) is examined and discussed. The results highlight a trade-off between the events' trustworthiness and the blockchain's reliability and security.

Blockchain technology now has applications in many areas, such as cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. For example, in an IoT system, sensors from different devices transfer data collected in cloud computing on a central server. The issues that arise relate to security and privacy matters that occur mainly due to difficulties in upgrading the software of millions of smart devices and the management of servers in the cloud by other third-party companies. By enabling the blockchain, various security options are offered by storing transactions in a decentralized and transparent system. However, a lot of effort is needed to integrate blockchain systems and their application in smart cities. In this work, we review how blockchain systems can be integrated into smart cities.

The distributed estimation of the number of active sensors in a network can be important for estimation and organization purposes. We propose a design methodology based on the following paradigm: some locally randomly generated values are exchanged among the various sensors and thus modified by known consensus-based strategies. Statistical analysis of the a-consensus values allows estimation of the number of participant sensors. The main features of this approach are: algorithms are completely distributed, since they do not require leader election steps;sensors are not requested to transmit authenticating information (for example identification numbers or similar data), and thus the strategy can be implemented whenever privacy problems arise. After a rigorous formulation of the paradigm we analyze some practical examples, fully characterize them from a statistical point of view, and finally we provide some general theoretical results and asymptotic analyses.

In this contribution, we discuss the election of an optimal leader out of a network of agents described by first integrator dynamics and running a consensus algorithm. The network of agents may be a group of autonomous robots or more generally communicating vehicles, and the target is, for instance, to move the formation to a new location. A leader is said to be optimal if it leads to a controllable network, and minimizes a quadratic cost of reaching a target for all the other agents of the network. In the first part, controllability conditions and a decentralized way of checking them are discussed. We then study the correlation between the value of a quadratic cost function measuring the leader performance and the network properties. Strong correlation is found between closeness and degree centrality indices of the agents and the cost of achieving the assigned tasks. This allows us to run the optimal leader election process without a central authority and without the nodes having full knowledge of the network topology.

Voltage stability and accurate current-sharing are primary features of an efficiently operating power distribution network, such as a dc islanded-microgrid. This paper presents the development of a distributed hierarchical droop control architecture for dc-dc boost converters within a dc islanded-microgrid. Decentralised controllers are conventionally designed for local voltage and current control without accounting for coupling to other converters. However, due to the non-minimum phase action of boost converters, global knowledge of coupling is required to inform stable local controller tuning over a range of load disturbances. consensus-based distributed secondary controllers, utilising low-bandwidth communications, are designed to coordinate voltage levels and improve current-sharing accuracy. The control architecture is tested in response to communication faults, non-linear loads, and plug-and-play operations.

The goal of this research is to realize robust teleoperation with multiple telerobots under changing communication topologies. In haptic teleoperation with multiple operators and multiple robots the forces as well as the positions should be transmitted between all the robots, which introduces difficulties in maintaining the stability and the efficiency of the system under communication failures or time delays on certain paths. In our research, we relax the constraints on the control system by approaching the multilateral teleoperation problem by using information graphs and consensus algorithms. We first show how decentralized multilateral teleoperation can be realized by using consensus filters. The haptic consensus algorithm which employs consensus filters is shown to be effective even on dynamically changing network topologies, as long as the network structure is connected and balanced. Furthermore we show that using haptic consensus algorithm it is possible to realize a bilateral teleoperation system for cooperative load carrying. Experiment results show that the haptic consensus algorithm enables multilateral teleoperation as well as bilateral multirobot cooperative teleoperation even on switching network topologies where the network topology is changing every control sampling time, which in our case is 100 microseconds. This means that the control system is very flexible, and tolerant against communication failures.

The rapid development of distributed energy resources (DER) in the distribution grid calls for novel control and coordination solutions. Optimal management of DER will enable end-users to decrease their electricity costs and provide crucial services to grid operators. In this paper, a decentralized Optimal Power Flow (OPF) model is used to locally coordinate DER in distribution networks, while considering the network constraints, in a distributed, transparent and secure fashion. To achieve that, a consensus-based distributed optimization algorithm is developed using the general form Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). To enable transparent and verifiable management of the network, the paper provides a comprehensive procedure for the implementation of the decentralized OPF on a private blockchain-smart contracts platform. The performance of the proposed framework is tested using real data from a case study in a residential neighborhood in Amsterdam with different varieties of DER. The implementation procedure on a blockchain-smart contracts platform may be adopted in other problems that require a smart contract to act as a virtual aggregator.

The Blockchain technology is the most widely used and known of the cybersecurity techniques in recent years. This technology contained a lot of techniques, which are economic models, mathematics, cryptography, and algorithms. It is vital for several reasons, which are solving the synchronization problem and does not require the presence of more than two parties. In this paper, we survey Blockchain technology in terms of the consensus algorithms, the architecture, and the main features of this technology. This survey is constructed by explaining the importance of the privacy and security of the blockchain, issues, and some solutions if possible exists. This paper contributes to supporting the researchers who want to study the Blockchain Technology in terms of concept, applications, "security and privacy issues and solutions", and work mechanism of it.

This paper investigates a multi-period vehicle loading problem with stochastic information regarding the release dates of items to be transported. The deterministic version of the problem can be formulated as a large-scale set covering problem. Several heuristic algorithms are proposed to generate decision policies for the stochastic optimization model over a long rolling horizon. The resulting policies have been extensively tested on instances which display the main characteristics of the industrial case-study that motivated the research. The tests demonstrate the benefits of the multi-period stochastic model over simple myopic strategies. A simple and efficient heuristic is shown to deliver good policies and to be robust against errors in the estimation of the probability distribution of the release dates.

When employing a consensus algorithm for state machine replication, should one optimize for the case that all communication links are usually timely or for fewer timely links? Does optimizing a protocol for better message complexity hamper the time complexity? In this paper, we investigate these types of questions using mathematical analysis as well as experiments over PlanetLab (WAN) and a LAN. We present a new and efficient leader-based consensus protocol that has O(n) stable-state message complexity (in a system with n processes) and requires only O(n) links to be timely at stable times. We compare this protocol with several previously suggested protocols. Our results show that a protocol that requires fewer timely links can achieve better performance, even if it sends fewer messages.
