Distributed optimal consensus algorithms in multi-agent systems

This paper investigates the distributed optimal consensus problem by designing the multi-agent communication systems, where each agent has local access to its own strongly convex utility function. Here, we design two distributed consensus-based optimization algorithms to tackle the optimization problem of multi-agent systems. One is the second-order optimization consensus algorithm, and another is the third-order algorithm. Moreover, the two algorithms can ensure that all agents achieve consensus at a common state which minimizes the sum of the objective function under the assumption that interaction graph is strongly connected and detailed balanced. For each of the proposed algorithms, it can be found that the equilibrium point of the algorithm is the optimal point and it is proved to be asymptotically stable under given conditions. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithms are verified by two simulations based on an IEEE 14-bus test system and an IEEE 57-bus test system. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Federated learning (FL) achieves collaborative learning without the need for data sharing, thus preventing privacy leakage. To extend FL into a fully decentralized algorithm, researchers have applied distributed optimization algorithms to FL by considering machine learning (ML) tasks as parameter optimization problems. Conversely, the consensus-based multi-hop federated distillation (CMFD) proposed in the authors' previous work makes neural network (NN) models get close with others in a function space rather than in a parameter space. Hence, this study solves two unresolved challenges of CMFD: (1) communication cost reduction and (2) visualization of model convergence. Based on a proposed dynamic communication cost reduction method (DCCR), the amount of data transferred in a network is reduced;however, with a slight degradation in the prediction accuracy. In addition, a technique for visualizing the distance between the NN models in a function space is also proposed. The technique applies a dimensionality reduction technique by approximating infinite-dimensional functions as numerical vectors to visualize the trajectory of how the models change by the distributed learning algorithm.

A Resilient consensus-Based Distributed Energy Management algorithm Against Data Integrity Attacks

This paper addresses the vulnerability of consensus-based distributed energy scheduling algorithm to data integrity attacks. A reputation-based neighborhood-watch mechanism is introduced to detect the false information and achieve optimal operating point in the presence of misbehaving controllers. The reputation-based neighborhood watch algorithm has three major functions: 1) verifying the correctness of neighbors' information based on two-hop shared information;2) identifying the compromised controller based on reputation indexes;and 3) maintaining the correctness of local information estimation in the presence of false information. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through simulation analyses in the future renewable electric energy delivery and management system.

A Resource Allocation algorithm for Formation Control of Connected Vehicles

A formation control problem is considered for a network of connected vehicles communicating over a 5G C-V2X communication system with limited network resources. To solve this problem, we propose a new combined control - resource allocation scheme to make the vehicles achieve the targeted formation. We concentrate on the formulation of the formation control problem under the constraints imposed by the communication system. We state the resource allocation problem and present an optimization algorithm to select the transmitting agents. The proposed algorithm allows to assign the network resources in a centralized way to ensure the convergence towards the desired formation while preserving the network connectivity.

An Improved Distributed Secondary Control Strategy for Battery Storage System in DC Shipboard Microgrid

In this article, an improved distributed secondary control strategy is proposed to achieve state of charge (SoC) balance, accurate load current sharing, and bus voltage recovery for battery storage system in dc shipboard microgrid. First, each battery storage unit (BSU) is regarded as a multiagent, and a neighbor-to-neighbor communication network is constructed to reduce the system communication burden. Each BSU is based on distributed consensus protocol, and global consensus can be achieved only by communication between adjacent BSUs. On this basis, a novel consensus-based SoC balancing algorithm is proposed to achieve accurate load current sharing, and a dc bus voltage controller is designed to achieve secondary regulation of the bus voltage. Furthermore, the SoC convergence characteristics, systems stability analysis, global dynamic model, and steady-state analysis of the proposed control strategy are studied. Finally, the simulation and StarSim HIL experimental results show that the proposed control strategy can achieve SoC dynamic balance, accurate load current sharing, and average bus voltage recovery under various complex conditions, and has a faster SoC convergence speed than advanced methods.

The asynchronous consensus protocol, as one of the core technologies of the blockchain, can ensure that the nodes in the system can agree on a certain value or status without assuming network capabilities. However, existing asynchronous consensus protocols face problems such as low efficiency and limited scalability. To address these problems, we propose an asynchronous consensus algorithm based on sharding, i.e., Monkey King, which innovatively introduces sharding into the field of asynchronous consensus. Our protocol divides the network into fixed-size shards, runs asynchronous common subset protocol (ACS) in each shard, selects a node from each shard to form the mainchain, then runs ACS once on the mainchain, and finally broadcasts the consensus result to All nodes. We implement the MK protocol and test the performance of different shard numbers under 100 nodes. Finally, we conduct comparative experiments between our protocol and Dumbo1/Dumbo2 under different numbers of nodes. Experimental results show that under 100-node scenario, the latency of our protocol is reduced by 94.51% and 79.04% respectively compared to Dumbo1 and Dumbo2. At the same time, under the condition of 100 nodes and a batch size of 10000, the throughput of our protocol increases by 520.1% and 12.7% respectively compared to Dumbo1 and Dumbo2, which reflects that our protocol has better performance in multi-node scenarios.

Battery energy storage system (BESS) commonly consists of multiple power conversion systems (PCSs) under parallel operation, which are controlled by a centralized controller to realize power allocation. As the number of PCSs increases, the topology and communication structure of the BESS become more complex, reducing the ability of centralized controller to respond quickly and flexibly. An effective approach to address this problem is to develop a distributed power allocation strategy. consensus theory, as an advanced distributed algorithm, is based on partial information interaction to achieve the state consistency of multiple agents. This paper presents a consensus-based strategy to realize efficient power allocation under distributed framework. The system convergence is analyzed under communication failure to demonstrate the robustness of the consensus -based control strategy. Considering state-of-charge (SOC) equalization, operation efficiency and battery life loss, the consensus factor of the consensus-based power allocation model is switched according to specific battery states and application scenarios. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is validated by simulation and real-world experiment in peak shaving and mitigating wind farm fluctuation scenarios.

This paper investigates the problem of consensus tracking control of discrete-time multi-agent systems under binary-valued communication. Different from most existing studies on consensus tracking, the transmitted information between agents is the binary-valued. Parameter identification with binary-valued observations is applied to the estimation of neighbors’ states and the tracking control is designed based on the estimation. Two Lyapunov functions are constructed to deal with the strong coupling of estimation and control. Compared with consensus problems under binary-valued communication, a reference state is required for consensus tracking control. Two scenarios of the time-varying reference state are studied respectively. (1) The reference state is asymptotically convergent. An online algorithm that performs estimation and control simultaneously is proposed, in which the estimation step size and the control gain are decreasing with time. By this algorithm, the multi-agent system is proved to achieve consensus tracking with convergence rate O(1/kΕ) under certain conditions. (2) The reference sate is bounded, which is less conservative than that in the first case. In this case, the esimation step size and control gain are designed to be constant. By this algorithm, all the followers can reach to a neighborhood of the leader with an exponential rate. Finally, simulations are given to demonstrate theoretical results. The paper proposes the consensus Augmented Lagrange Alternating Direction Inexact Newton (consensus ALADIN) algorithm, a novel approach for solving distributed consensus optimization problems (DC). consensus ALADIN allows each agent to independently solve its own nonlinear programming problem while coordinating with other agents by solving a consensus quadratic programming (QP) problem. Building on this, we propose Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) consensus ALADIN, a communication-and-computation-efficient consensus ALADIN. BFGS consensus ALADIN improves communication efficiency through BFGS approximation techniques and enhances computational efficiency by deriving a closed form for the consensus QP problem. Additionally, by replacing the BFGS approximation with a scaled identity matrix, we develop Reduced consensus ALADIN, a more computationally efficient variant. We establish the convergence theory for consensus ALADIN and demonstrate its effectiveness through application to a nonconvex sensor allocation problem. Copyright © 2025, The Authors.
