A Systematic Literature Review Toward a Blockchain Benchmarking Framework

Blockchain is a disruptive technology that focuses on the safe exchange of data between several distributed applications. Despite its widespread adoption, there are areas that require further research towards the understanding of their performance characteristics. In addition, consensus algorithms, a vital part of blockchain, require a more comprehensive understanding of their technical principles and characteristics. Along with the design of different types of consensus algorithms, several challenges, such as system scalability and power consumption, have been raised. Therefore, more comprehensive research is needed to investigate the degree to which consensus algorithms are built and how they perform. To this end, this study extends the body of knowledge and contributes towards the assessment of blockchain protocol performance. We present a comprehensive taxonomy of selected studies on blockchain performance, identifying similarities and differences while attempting to identify existing work on simulators and benchmarking frameworks that aim to explore the performance of blockchain-enabled consensus algorithms.

Resilient Trajectory Propagation in Multirobot Networks

This article presents a novel method for a class of multirobot networks to resiliently propagate vector messages from a set of leaders to all followers within the network in the presence of faulty or adversarially behaving robots. It is shown that the proposed method can operate under heterogeneous communication rates between robots and perturbations of the leaders' propagated information. As a case study, the proposed method is applied to the problem of time-varying trajectory tracking;more specifically, time-varying reference trajectories in the form of Bezier curves are encoded into vectors of static parameters, which, in turn, are resiliently propagated from the leaders to the followers.

Blockchain-Enabled Online Traffic Congestion Duration Prediction in Cognitive Internet of Vehicles

The real-time intelligent perception and prediction of traffic situation can assist connected automated vehicles (CAVs) in path planning and reduce traffic congestion in Cognitive Internet of Vehicles (CIoVs). The centralized traffic congestion prediction solutions generally fail to adapt to the dynamic traffic environment and lead to significant communication overheads. Blockchain technology has attracted great attention in the information sharing of vehicular networks for its advantages in decentralization, transparency, traceability, and tamper-proof capability. However, due to the bottlenecks, such as high computational cost, current blockchains are incapable actuate on efficient online traffic situational cognition and prediction for CIoVs. Motivated by this, we propose a blockchain-enabled cognitive segments sharing framework for online multistep congestion duration prediction. We design a cognitive model of traffic situation based on anomaly detection and filtering mechanism to guarantee the accuracy of the cognitive segments before being packaged into the block. Furthermore, to improve the consensus efficiency, we design a credit evaluation mechanism and propose a credit-based delegated Byzantine fault tolerance (CDBFT) algorithm. Finally, we propose an online multistep prediction algorithm based on long short-term memory (LSTM) to predict future traffic congestion duration. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve shorter consensus latency and higher predictive accuracy than the existing algorithms.

A Trustworthy Safety Inspection Framework Using Performance-Security Balanced Blockchain

Regular safety inspection is critical to reduce safety risk in industry. Applying the consortium blockchain technology to safety inspection can ensure the effectiveness of the inspection process and tracing of problems. However, there are two major issues when using conventional consortium blockchain. It is challenging to guarantee the authenticity of the retrieved data source, and meanwhile, achieving a balance between performance and security is not easy. Hence, this article proposes a blockchain-based performance-security balanced safety inspection framework (PSB-SIF), in which a safety inspection box is designed to ensure the authenticity of the inspector's identity while inspection logic is executed automatically via smart contracts. In addition, this article also proposes a novel credit scoring-based Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus algorithm, named safety inspection BFT consensus algorithm (SIBFT), which is used to balance the performance and security of consensus network in a safety inspection. We evaluate the proposed approach by comparing with the solutions using RAFT, Practical BFT (PBFT), and SIBFT consensus algorithms in terms of throughput, transaction latency, scalability, and security of PSB-SIF. The evaluation results show that PSB-SIF is efficient for all these quality metrics.

Adaptive Coalition Formation-Based Coordinated Voltage Regulation in Distribution Networks

High penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems can cause severe voltage quality problems in distribution networks. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy based on the dynamic formation of coalitions to coordinate a large number of PV inverters for voltage regulation. In this strategy, a rule-based coalition formation scheme deals with the zonal voltage difference caused by the uneven integration of PV capacity. Under this scheme, PV inverters form into separate voltage regulation coalitions autonomously according to local, neighbor as well as coalition voltage magnitude and regulation capacity information. To coordinate control within each coalition, we develop a feedback-based leader-follower consensus algorithm which eliminates the voltage violations caused by the fast fluctuations of load and PV generation. This algorithm allocates the required reactive power contribution among the PV inverters according to their maximum available capacity to promote an effective and fair use of the overall voltage regulation capacity. Case studies based on realistic distribution networks and field-recorded data validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Moreover, comparison with a centralized network decomposition-based scheme shows the flexibility of coalition formation in organizing the distributed PV inverters. The robustness and generalizability of the proposed strategy are also demonstrated.

Hierarchical Cooperative Control Strategy for Battery Storage System in Islanded DC Microgrid

This paper presents a novel hierarchical cooperative control strategy to solve the problems of unbalanced State of Charge (SoC), unreasonable load current sharing, and unstable bus voltage for battery storage system (BSS) in islanded DC microgrid. In the communication layer, a neighbor-to-neighbor communication network architecture is constructed in which each battery storage unit (BSU) only communicates information with neighboring nodes, and a multi-agent consensus algorithm is used to iteratively estimate the relevant average global variables. In the main control layer, the droop coefficient is dynamically adjusted by constructing a fast SoC convergence function to ensure that the load current is reasonably distributed based on the rated capacity of each BSU. In the secondary control layer, a virtual voltage drop equalization controller and an average bus voltage compensation controller are designed to eliminate the impact of line impedance mismatch and compensate the average bus voltage. Furthermore, an optimized factor is designed to accelerate the later stage of SoC convergence. Finally, a DC microgrid experimental platform based on StarSim HIL is built, and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can achieve the control objectives of fast SoC balance, proportional load current sharing, and bus voltage stability.

Distributed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Positioning for Multitarget Tracking with Bearing-Only Information

This paper proposes a distributed positioning algorithm for a swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to track multiple moving targets with bearing-only measurements. An approximate performance metric is first derived that can be used in position determination based on the properties of multisensor joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) filter. A fully distributed position planning algorithm using incremental optimization strategy is then proposed for tracking multiple moving targets. Simulation examples with comparison results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Global FLS-based consensus of Stochastic Uncertain Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems

Using graph theory, matrix theory, adaptive control, fuzzy logic systems and other tools, this paper studies the leader-follower global consensus of two kinds of stochastic uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems(MAS). Firstly, the fuzzy logic systems replaces the feedback compensator as the feedforward compensator to describe the uncertain nonlinear dynamics. Secondly, based on the network topology, all followers are divided into two categories: One is the followers who can obtain the leader signal, and the other is the follower who cannot obtain the leader signal. Thirdly, based on the adaptive control method, distributed control protocols are designed for the two types of followers. Fourthly, based on matrix theory and stochastic Lyapunov stability theory, the stability of the closed-loop systems is analyzed. Finally, three simulation examples are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithms.

Finite-Time Observer-Based Leader-Following consensus for Nonlinear Multiagent Systems With Input Delays

This article studies the finite-time observer-based leader-following consensus problem for a class of nonlinear multiagent systems with nonuniform time-varying input delays. Existing works usually assume that input delays are the same constants and the input of the leader is available for each follower. In this article, we propose a new distributed consensus algorithm to relax the conservative condition. A novel finite-time distributed observer is designed for each follower, which can accurately estimate the state information of the leader in a setting time. By means of the observer, the distributed controller is proposed for each follower, and it depends only on the state information of the follower and the estimated-state information of its neighbor agents. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory, it is strictly proved that all agents can achieve a consensus. Finally, the effectiveness of the theoretical results is verified by numerical simulation on a group of single-link manipulators.
