Management of electronic ledger: a constraint programming approach for solving curricula scheduling problems

Curricula timetabling belongs to the scheduling and planning domain of artificial intelligence, the problem largely recognised by its key importance for initiating and afterward regulating the curricula events. In the literature the issue is reflected as a resources management job against puzzling constraints. The group of hard constraints requires the vital priority and must be removed, whereas the degree of solving of soft constraints upraises the quality scale and leads to optimal solution at the end. Constraint programming is one of the contemporary techniques that shape the research work presented in this article. The research investigates a constraint programming framework to examine over the various datasets. The study proposes and implements three incremental low-level heuristics operated by min-conflict algorithm approach for solving identical but unequal benchmark scheduling instances. The framework is designed in such way to provide fair chance of randomisation and incremental calculation to parameters in order to keep up the accuracy. The acquired prominent results validated the effectiveness and correctness of proposed methodology.

The problem considered in this paper concerns the proactive mission planning of a UAV fleet, taking into account simultaneous changes in weather conditions and delivery dates. This problem belongs to the VRP class of fuzzy weather forecast and fuzzy delivery time window constraints where UAV delivery routes must be resistant to simultaneous changes in weather conditions and delivery dates. The applied methodology, based on the declarative modeling paradigm, allows the use of commercially available constraint programming packages and considers new cases extended by demand and travel time constraints. To illustrate the possibilities of practical use of the proposed approach, multiple simulation experiments of potential scenarios of planned missions have been carried out. The obtained results indicate the proposed approach can be used for planning UAV fleet mission sizes occurring in practice while being robust to selected environmental disruptions in online mode.

This paper tackles the scheduling problem of both production and flexible preventive maintenance activities on a single machine under human resource constraints. The considered human resources oversee the maintenance activities. They are characterised by a competence level and a timetabling that determines their availabilities. Our objective is to minimise a common and weighted objective function that involves both the tardiness and the earliness resulting from production and maintenance activities when considering maintenance workers. We first introduce a mathematical modelling for the studied problem that we implemented in Cplex in order to compute the optimal solutions of small instances of this problem. Secondly, we propose an improved guided local search (GLS) metaheuristic to deal with relatively large instances of the problem. Cplex is used as a reference exact method to check the solution quality of the approached method GLS. The proposed methods are evaluated on a large number of randomly generated instances. The experimental results show that the studied problem is very hard to solve optimally, the approached method GLS performs well and is able to find good solutions to instances up to 700 jobs in a reasonable CPU time. Discrete constraint problems surface often in everyday life. Teachers might group students with complex considerations and hospital administrators need to produce staff rosters. Constraint programming (CP) provides techniques to efficiently find solutions. However, there remains a key challenge: these techniques are still largely inaccessible because expressing constraint problems requires sophisticated programming and logic skills. In this work we contribute a language and tool that leverage knowledge of how non-experts conceptualize problems to facilitate the expression of constraint models. Additionally, we report the results of a study surveying the advantages and remaining challenges towards making CP accessible to the wider public.

Small and medium enterprises are significantly hampered by cyber-threats as they have inherently limited skills and financial capacities to anticipate, prevent, and handle security incidents. The EU-funded PALANTIR project aims at facilitating the outsourcing of the security supervision to external providers to relieve SMEs/MEs from this burden. However, good practices for the operation of SME/ME assets involve avoiding their exposure to external parties, which requires a tightly defined and timely enforced security policy when resources span across the cloud continuum and need interactions. This paper proposes an innovative architecture extending Network Function Virtualisation to externalise and automate threat mitigation and remediation in cloud, edge, and on-premises environments. Our contributions include an ontology for the decision-making process, a Fault-and-Breach-Management-based remediation policy model, a framework conducting remediation actions, and a set of deployment models adapted to the constraints of cloud, edge, and on-premises environment(s). Finally, we also detail an implementation prototype of the framework serving as evaluation material.

This paper presents a variant of the Periodic Vehicle Routing Problem, where a fleet of homogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in periodically repeated missions, serves spatially dispersed customers, over a planning horizon. The plan of mission includes both routing and scheduling decisions. The fleet's size and UAV's lifting capacity allow for the implementation of missions. However, the changing weather conditions affect the energy consumption of UAVs, and limits their range because of an earlier depletion of batteries. That may result in only partly fulfilment of the demand. Thus, the planning of subsequent missions should take into consideration, previously unmet demand, as well as the current weather forecast. We aim to propose a new approach to an online, proactive periodic planning, which guarantees timely delivery of the required quantity of goods, while taking into account the forecasted weather changes. We implement a constraint programming approach with ordered fuzzy numbers. That allows coping with nonlinearity of system's characteristics and computational accumulation of inaccuracies generated by the uncertainty of travel parameters. The proposed approach is evaluated on several instances, including real-life scenarios. The computational experiments have shown that the developed model is capable of providing feasible plans of UAVs' mission in an online mode.

The trend towards a precise, numerical, and data-intensive agriculture brings forward the need to design and combine optimization techniques to obtain decision support methodologies that are efficient, interactive, robust and adaptable. In this paper, we consider the Differential Harvest Problem (DHP) in precision viticulture. To tackle this problem, we dedicated a specific column generation approach with enumeration techniques and a constraint programming model. Therefore, a set of simulated instances (which differ in field shape, zone shape, and size) was created to perform a parametric study on our different approaches. The specific column generation approach presented in this paper is preliminary work in the development path of more sophisticated resolution methods such as robust optimization and column generation/constraint programming hybridization.

A decision support model for prototyping in-plant milk-run traffic systems

In the present study, a declarative model is developed which allows to formulate a constraint satisfaction problem that provides decision support for prototyping in-plant milk-run traffic systems. In particular, the model is used to determine the number of transport trips and their organization in time and space needed for timely delivery of material to specific loading/unloading points. Implemented in a constraints programming driven solver, it allows to formulate forward and reverse milk-run vehicle routing and scheduling problems subject to constraints imposed by an in-plant distribution network. In this context, our contribution can be seen as an alternative approach to DSS design, which allows one to search for solutions by alternate and iterative formulation of successive forward and reverse decision problems. In this paper, we study a new scheduling problem that considers both production and flexible preventive maintenance on a single machine where the human resource constraints (the availability and the competence) are taken into account. The objective function involves both the tardiness and the earliness resulting from production and maintenance tasks. We propose a mathematical formulation of the studied problem that is expressed in the constraint programming (CP) paradigm as a set of linear constraints. This CP modeling had been implemented in ILOG OPL language and the exact method Cplex is applied on it to compute the optimal solutions of relatively small instances of the problem. Further, a heuristic algorithm is provided to deal with lager instances of the problem. Computational experiments demonstrate that the proposed heuristic performs well and is able to find good solutions to instances up to 700 jobs in a reasonable CPU time. (C) 2018 The Authors.
