Audio and video streaming across delay tolerant networks are relatively new phenomena. During the Apollo 11 mission, video and audio were streamed directly back to Earth using fully analog radios. This streaming capability atrophied over time due to the gradual conversion to digital electronics accompanied with higher resolutions causing the required bit rates to outpace communication link performance. Additionally, 21st century space systems face the new requirement of interconnectedness. Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) attempts to solve this requirement by uniting traditional point to point links into a robust and dynamic network. However, In order to avoid system bottlenecks, the High-Rate Delay Tolerant Networking (HDTN) implementation focuses on performance-optimization of the standards. This work extends the functionality of HDTN by implementing audio and video streaming, with the goal of demonstrating the practical application of high definition media streaming across space networks. A series of network topologies were created including simple point to point links and multi-node multi-hop networks. Test media in the form of prerecorded and live footage was streamed across the network. A set of objective quality metrics were established in order to measure the stream quality. A lunar network was emulated using a mixture of embedded ARM platforms.

The SWARM-EX three-CubeSat mission is a paragon of small satellite ventures which require innovative software design decisions to realize the mission's principal objectives. Seeking to concurrently investigate equatorial space weather phenomena and advance the state-of-the-art in spacecraft swarming, the SWARM-EX team has developed a flight software architecture that satisfies the requirements of the mission. Choosing a low-power 16-bit dsPIC33 as the principal onboard microcontroller to increase student engagement, design features such as the taskslot architecture, timekeeping informed by GPS, and usage of non-volatile memory enables comprehensive maintenance of all onboard peripherals and mission-critical telemetry. All command and telemetry data packets are uniquely identifiable by adhering to the consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) space Packet Protocol 133.0-B-2 managed by a singular routing function known as the CCSDS Highway. A combination of radio packet protocols and a novel packet layer known as the Callsign Identifier enables any of the mission's three ground stations or three spacecraft to uniquely distinguish a data packet's source and destination. The authors aim to have these techniques serve as a specific case from which more advanced planning processes can be derived, some of which may proliferate to other small satellite projects throughout the field.

REStRAIN: Conceptualization of Agile Process Tools Integration with Reference to the Aerospace Industry

This paper describes the development of a framework that integrates engineering software and agile tools based on ontologies and business rules. The aim of this integration is to help project managers specify their own rules of integration between development software and agile tools. This integration circumvents the limitations of on-the-shelf plugins that perform a very basic integration that not only fails to satisfy the complex needs of project managers but also provides insufficient customization possibilities. A formalization of the domain knowledge ontology and its extension are presented. A generic integration algorithm is presented, and some of its performance properties are detailed. To examine the application and validation of the framework, it is deployed for the integration of spacecraft data definition software with issue management systems. This deployment shows how project managers can specify the integration rules that give them the appropriate feedback information at project level after spacecraft data updates. The evaluation of the framework is conducted at two stages. At the time of design, the usability of the framework is evaluated, and it is shown that the general usability criterion is 4.15 on a Likert-type five-point response scale. Additionally, a comparison with on-the-shelf integration plugins shows that less cognitive effort is required from project managers to customize the presented framework integration rules. At run time, the execution time of the presented framework integration algorithm is evaluated. This evaluation shows that even for updates of large data files on the development software, the agile tools are updated following project managers' integration rules in a reasonable time.

Mastering deep space is one of the main stages in the development of science as a whole. Considering the space industry, all the most modern technologies of mankind are taken. One of the most important tasks in space exploration is the implementation of sustainable information exchange between different segments. Special attention is paid to systems for automatic identification of objects, which in turn contribute to optimizing the time allotted for clear positioning of objects for organizing life activities, defining specifications, as well as making managerial decisions aimed at planning and efficient management of material flow to support vital functions and fulfill strategic tasks of astronauts . The purpose of this article is to study the technology of radio frequency identification, as applied to the space industry, as well as modeling the process of information exchange of various segments, to identify the optimality of algorithms in the development of data encoding methods in the space industry. The article discusses the tasks of material flow identification, standardization based on CCSDS 881.1-B-1 (spacecraft Onboard Interface Services-RFID tag encoding specification) standart and various versions of regulatory documents. The task of information exchange between different segments space station based on RFID technology is not completely solved. Due to the presence of various segments, testing for possible errors in the information exchange between segments is necessary and very important. The article presents the solution of the cargo identification problem, presents the structure of the label fields, presents the choice of symbol libraries and models, and presents mathematical coding model. Based on the choice of information coding systems, simulation was performed at various values of the material flow labels. Possible identification errors are determined based on the simulation. In this paper a new approach of digital communication system, The 4D8 PSK TCM Encoder Decoder design is presented. Aside ² from Earth, the inner solar system is like a vast desert where water and other volatiles are scarce. An old saying is, “In the desert, gold is useless and water is priceless.” While water is common on Earth, it is of very high value in space. Science missions to the Moon have provided direct evidence that regions near the lunar poles, which are permanently in shadow, contain substantial concentrations of water ice. On the lunar surface, water itself is critical for human consumption and radiation shielding, but water can also be decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis. The oxygen thus produced can be used for life support, and hydrogen and oxygen can be combusted for rocket propulsion. Due to the Moon's shallow gravity well, its water-derived products can be exported to fuel entirely new economic opportunities in space. This paper is the result of an examination by industry, government, and academic experts of the approach, challenges, and payoffs of a private business that harvests and processes lunar ice as the foundation of a lunar, cislunar (between the Earth and the Moon), and Earth-orbiting economy. A key assumption of this analysis is that all work—construction, operation, transport, maintenance and repair—is done by robotic systems. No human presence is required. Obtaining more data on conditions within the shadowed regions is vital to the design of a lunar ice processing plant. How much water is actually present, and at what percentage in the lunar regolith? How firm or soft are the crater bottoms, and how will that affect surface transportation? How deep is the ice resource, and in what state is it deposited amongst the regolith? These and other questions must be answered by precursor prospecting and science missions. A wide range of potential customers for the hydrogen and oxygen products has been identified. The mini-micro command and control center has supported different scientific missions for the past fifteen years. As with the other command and control centers, it has helped different teams to achieve their goals. It was created with the cheapest available components and the maintenance costs have been low. Despite this, the command and control center was able to adapt to new needs and new ways of working. Today the center has become a sort of experimental laboratory for the new CNES ISIS (Initiative for space Innovative Standards) generic Command and Control Centre (CCC) to be used by all future CNES missions.. Reconfigurable architecture for real-time image compression on-board satellites

A high-speed image compression architecture with region-of-interest (ROI) support and with flexible access to compressed data based on the consultative committee for space data systems 122.0-B-1 image data compression standard is presented. Modifications of the standard permit a change of compression parameters and the reorganization of the bit stream after compression. An additional index of the compressed data is created, which renders it possible to locate individual parts of the bit stream. On request, stored images can be reassembled according to the application's needs and as requested by the ground station. Interactive transmission of the compressed data is possible such that overview images can be transmitted first followed by detailed information for the ROI. The architecture was implemented for a Xilinx Virtex-5QV and a single instance is able to compress images at a rate of 200 Mpx/s at a clock frequency of 100 MHz. The design ensures that all parts of the system have a high utilization and parallelism. A Virtex-5QV allows compression of images with a width of up to 4096 px without external memory. The power consumption of the architecture is similar to 4 W. This example is one of the fastest implementations yet reported and sufficient for future high-resolution imaging systems. In this paper a communication system for CubeSats in formation that operate in the vicinity of the Moon is proposed. A CDMA system for the fleet of CubeSats in the vicinity of the moon to communicate with the Earth station is considered. This is an extension of our previous proposed CDMA system for a concept Constellation of CubeSats. In this paper the Doppler effects on CDMA communication system performance for a constellation of CubeSats around the Moon will be investigated. As an example we have estimated the maximum Doppler and Doppler rate profile of a SOLARA/SARA CubeSat scenario. We investigate the Effects of Doppler Shift/Rate on the CDMA system performance as a result of the CubeSat constellation orbiting in a halo orbit around Earth-Moon Lagrange Point L1. A detailed analysis and simulation of system in presence of Doppler frequency and unknown carrier phase will be performed. First we define the CDMA system for uplink and downlink between the vicinity of the Moon and Earth station. Link budgets will be provided both for uplink and downlink. Bandwidth limitations imposed by the spectral standards will be investigated for modulation formats. All system simulations are done using Simulink Matlab platform. For highly efficient nonlinear power amplifiers, we prefer to use a filtered offset QPSK with phase modulation, which is a CCSDS standard for constant envelope signaling. This allows us to use a nonlinear amplifier at CubeSat to operate at saturation point for the highest efficiency. Filtered offset QPSK with phase modulation is much more bandwidth efficient scheme. We demonstrate that this modulation format satisfies the two international spectral standards. For estimated and specified Doppler frequencies and Doppler rates we design frequency-tracking loops to track the Doppler frequency and Doppler rate in the presence of data with filtered offset QPSK with phase modulation.
