An efficient 3D DEM-FEM contact detection algorithm for tire-sand interaction

The combined discrete-finite element method is often used for dynamic interaction simulations, in which contact detection is the most time-consuming but critical constituent. Therefore, it is significant to develop an accurate and efficient contact detection algorithm. In this study, an efficient contact detection algorithm termed TSC (tire-sand contact) is developed for dealing with the interactions between spherical discrete elements and hexahedral finite elements. The global search of TSC is suitable for the contact detection of tire-sand interaction. In the global search phase, according to the contact characteristics of tire movement on granular terrain, the potential contact pairs are quickly determined by using the method of dynamically changing the slave nodes and master segments within a moving contact region. The local search is based on the principle of inside-outside algorithm, and the contact region is divided into three types, i.e. surface contact region, edge contact region and node contact region. In the local search phase, the invalid contact pairs and repeated contact pairs can be quickly excluded from the multiple potential contact pairs of one particle according to the relevant judgment conditions. And the Hertz-Mindlin contact model is used in corresponding contact force calculation. As a result, the quick contact search and accurate evaluation of contact force are accomplished. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the TSC algorithm in 3D contact analysis, which also demonstrates the advantages of the proposed algorithm in tire-sand interaction simulations. A robust contact detection algorithm based on the contact Theory in the three-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis

The two-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA), as a discrete numerical method, has been successfully used to simulate many rock mechanics and rock engineering problems. However, for the development of the three-dimensional DDA (3D-DDA), the contact detection between polyhedral blocks has long been one of the key difficulties awaited to be solved. A universal contact Theory was proposed by Shi in 2015, in which the complicated contact relationship of two any-shaped blocks is represented by a simple relationship between a reference point and an entrance block, along with a concept of the contact cover. In the present study, a robust contact detection algorithm in the 3D-DDA for convex polyhedral blocks based on the contact Theory is proposed. In this algorithm, all the six basic contact types of polyhedral blocks are functionally treated as two contact types, namely, the vertex-to-face contact and the non-parallel edge-to-edge contact;meanwhile, the vertex-to-vertex and vertex-to-edge contacts are specially handled to guarantee the effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm. Two special contact cases with the parallel edge-to-edge contact and the vertex-to-vertex contact, respectively, and two multi-block cases, in which various contact types and the transition between them are involved, are simulated to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed contact detection algorithm. Moreover, failure simulations of sliding and toppling slopes with massive rock blocks are conducted and in the sliding case the effect of a retaining wall is also simulated. Results indicate that, the proposed algorithm can handle the contact detections of convex polyhedral blocks effectively under critical and complex conditions, which builds a good precondition for the successful development and practical application of the 3D-DDA method.

An improved contact detection algorithm for bonded particles based on multi-level grid and bounding box in DEM simulation

Non-spherical particles have shown increasing importance in the simulation of discrete element methods. Bonded particle model (BPM) is often used to realize the inclusion of non-spherical particles into the calculation using spherical calculation methods. However, the traditional grid subdivision method shows low efficiency and high computational complexity in the face of particle clusters containing a large number of elemental spheres. In this paper, an improved contact detection algorithm for bonded particles based on multi-level grid and bounding box method is proposed. The algorithm treats unbroken or broken new dusters as a unit in the process of contact detection. The contact detection problem including dusters is split into two steps: a pre-detection between the bounding spheres in the primary grid and an accurate contact detection of the elemental spheres in the secondary grid. The hopper experiment and the comminution simulation show that the algorithm has high accuracy and the calculation results are in line with the actual situation. The numerical simulation results of multiple sets of comparisons show that the improved algorithm has higher computing speed than the traditional grid subdivision algorithm, especially when the particle distribution in the calculation domain is relatively loose, the number of particle clusters is large or the composition of the cluster is more complicated. Construction of poly-ellipsoidal grain shapes from SMT imaging on sand, and the development of a new DEM contact detection algorithm

Purpose - This paper aims to construct smooth poly-ellipsoid shapes from synchrotron microcomputed tomography (SMT) images on sand and to develop a new discrete element method (DEM) contact detection algorithm. Design/methodology/approach - Voxelated images generated by SMT on Colorado Mason sand are processed to construct smooth poly-ellipsoidal particle approximations. For DEM contact detection, cuboidal shape approximations to the poly-ellipsoids are used to speed up contact detection. Findings - The poly-ellipsoid particle shape approximation to Colorado Mason sand grains is better than a simpler ellipsoidal approximation. The new DEM contact algorithm leads to significant speedup and accuracy is maintained. Research limitations/implications - The paper limits particle shape approximation to smooth poly-ellipsoids. Practical implications - Poly-ellipsoids provide asymmetry of particle shapes as compared to ellipsoids, thus allowing closer representation of real sand grain shapes that may be angular and unsymmetric. When incorporated in a DEM for computation, the poly-ellipsoids allow better representation of particle rolling, sliding and interlocking phenomena. Originality/value - Method to construct poly-ellipsoid particle shapes from SMT data on real sands and computationally efficient DEM contact detection algorithm for poly-ellipsoids.

Dynamics of mechanical systems involving impact and friction using an efficient contact detection algorithm

In this work, some new results are presented on the dynamics of a class of multibody mechanical systems, involving contact and friction. The main contribution refers to the development of a systematic, accurate and efficient method for detecting contact among the components of a system of solid bodies. For some simple geometries, this task is achieved by employing analytical means. For systems possessing components with complex geometric shapes a more involved numerical methodology is developed. In both cases, once a potential contact point is detected, the common tangent plane and normal vector are located and the penetration depth is calculated, leading to determination of the force arising between the contacting bodies. This information is then passed to a solver, providing the full dynamic response of the system. The validity and numerical efficiency of the methodology developed is first demonstrated by considering a number of examples with relatively small geometric complexity but large traditional value and interesting dynamic response. Some new results are obtained and presented on the dynamics of these systems. Finally, the same methodology is also tested in a more complicated and demanding mechanical application. The interaction simulations between particles and structures are often performed in the context of the combined discrete-finite element (DEM-FEM) method, where an efficient, robust and accurate contact algorithm for challenging contact problems is essential. A three-dimensional (3D) discrete and finite element contact algorithm, named ZGL here, has been proposed in our research group (Zang, M.Y. et al., 2011. A contact algorithm for 3D discrete and finite element contact problems based on penalty function method. Comput. Mech. 48, 541-550.). Despite being quite well-established, ZGL algorithm may lack efficiency, robustness and accuracy in certain situations, e.g., when special mesh pattern is applied. However, since such cases are readily to appear in practice engineering application, an algorithm named DZCeII is developed to resolve these issues and thus significantly applicable to challenging contact problems. The proposed DZCell algorithm includes an improved global phase to directly find the potential segments rather than the nearest node for discrete elements as contact counterparts. Furthermore, both the memory cost and time consumption of this algorithm are linear, and the algorithm is readily to extend to parallel computing. Several numerical examples demonstrate the achievable improvements in terms of efficiency, robustness and accuracy for 3D contact analysis and validate the capability of the DZCeII algorithm in the granular science and mechanical engineering. An efficient GPU-based ALE-DEM coupling method for tire-sand interaction dynamics

The coupling of the finite element method and the discrete element method is one of the powerful approaches for simulating tire-sand interaction dynamics. However, the computational cost is significantly heavy for the models with a huge number of sand particles and fine meshes of the tire for the accurate contact detection. In this study, by introducing the arbitrary Lagrange-Euler (ALE) formulation, an efficient GPU-based ALE-DEM coupling method is proposed for simulating tire-sand interaction dynamics. Firstly, based on the ALE method and absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF), the tire is discretized by the ALE-ANCF shell elements, and an incompressibility Mooney-Rivlin constitutive model is employed. A kinematic constraint equation with a material flow velocity is established to describe the relationship between the rigid rim and the flexible tire tread. By utilizing the ALE method, fine meshes of the tire tread are used on the contact region to obtain a detailed distribution of contact stress and strain, while coarse meshes are used on the other non-contact region to save computational time. Secondly, the sand particles are modeled by the DEM. Thirdly, for contact detection between finite elements and particles, an efficient global search algorithm based on the ALE method and an improved local search algorithm are proposed. Finally, the computational framework of the ALE-DEM coupling method based on GPU parallelization is established for the tire-sand system. Three numerical examples are presented to validate this method and the tire-sand interaction dynamics is simulated and comparatively studied.

Rock cracking simulation in tension and compression by peridynamics using a novel contact-friction model with a twin mesh and potential functions

Peridynamics (PD) is an effective method for simulating the spontaneous initiation and propagation of tensile cracks in materials. However, it faces great challenges in simulating compression-shear cracking of geomaterials due to the lack of efficient contact-friction models. This paper introduces an original contact-friction model that leverages twin mesh and potential function principles within PD to model rock cracking under tensile and compressive stresses. The contact detection algorithm, based on space segmentation axis-aligned bounding box (AABB) tree data structure, is used to address the significant challenge of highly efficient contact detection in compression and shear problems. In this method, the twin mesh and potential function are utilized to quantify contact detection and contact degree, as well as friction behavior. This is in contrast to the distance and circular contact area model, which lacks physical significance in the classical PD method. As demonstrated by the tests on specimens containing cracks, the proposed model can capture 8 types of secondary fractures, reduce the contact detection error by about 29%–56%, and increase the contact retrieval efficiency by over 1600 times compared to the classic PD models. This significantly enhances the capability of PD to simulate the initiation, expansion, and coalescence of intricate compression-shear cracks. © 2025 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

The contact Theory proposed by Shi in 2015 is expected to solve the contact detection problem of discrete blocks in a perfect and universal manner. In the present paper, a contact detection algorithm for arbitrary polygonal blocks based on the contact Theory is proposed and coupled into the two-dimensional DDA (2D-DDA). Four different methods to determine the contact entrance lines are presented, and among which the contact vector method is used in the proposed contact detection algorithm because of its advantage in treatment of small overlapping of blocks along the edges and its simplicity in implementation. The vertex-to-vertex contact and vertex-to-edge contact are separately handled to effectively select the final actually needed entrance lines for the contact treatment. The proposed algorithm is examined by some representative and complex simulation examples, and the results are theoretically verified or compared with that by the original 2D-DDA with the direct contact detection algorithm based on the angle method. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can handle the contact detection of convex and concave blocks in diverse scenarios effectively. This work proves the feasibility and robustness of the contact Theory, and provides 2D-DDA an optional effective approach for the contact detection.
