This paper introduces an efficient method for lossless compression of depth map images, using the representation of a depth image in terms of three entities: 1) the crack-edges;2) the constant depth regions enclosed by them;and 3) the depth value over each region. The starting representation is identical with that used in a very efficient coder for palette images, the piecewise-constant image model coding, but the techniques used for coding the elements of the representation are more advanced and especially suitable for the type of redundancy present in depth images. Initially, the vertical and horizontal crack-edges separating the constant depth regions are transmitted by 2D context coding using optimally pruned context trees. Both the encoder and decoder can reconstruct the regions of constant depth from the transmitted crack-edge image. The depth value in a given region is encoded using the depth values of the neighboring regions already encoded, exploiting the natural smoothness of the depth variation, and the mutual exclusiveness of the values in neighboring regions. The encoding method is suitable for lossless compression of depth images, obtaining compression of about 10-65 times, and additionally can be used as the entropy coding stage for lossy depth compression.

In the paper improvements obtained for context lossless audio coding are investigated. The approach is not popular in audio compression, hence, the research concentrates on static forward predictors optimized using MMSE criterion. Two and three context algorithms are tested on 16 popular benchmark recordings. Savings due to inter-channel audio dependencies are also considered. It is shown that indeed, context approach has potential of improving data compaction properties of audio coding algorithms.

In VVC, the intra prediction mode of a block is encoded using the most probable mode (MPM). For this purpose, possible candidate modes for MPM are maintained in the MPM candidate list. The list is constructed differently depending on the number of neighboring angular intra prediction modes. While it is important to maintain a proper MPM candidate list, but how to encode the selected list index is also important. In this paper, we investigate on context coding of the MPM candidate list index instead of the current bypass-coding in VVC. The proposed method achieves a BDBR gain of 0.08% in the Y channel, and 0.10% and 0.06% respectively in the Cb and Cr channels.

A new efficient and fast context lossless image coding method is presented in the paper, named Multi-ctx. High performance is obtained due to the fact that predictors are chosen from a very large database. On the other hand, simple rules determining contexts result in low computational complexity of the method. The technique can be easily adapted to specific class of applications, as the algorithm can be trained on a set of exemplary images. For the purpose of proving its potential it has been trained on a set of 45 images of various type, then its performance compared to that of some widely used fast techniques. Indeed, the new method appears to be the best, even better than CALIC approach.

The paper presents a new lossless ECG compression scheme. The short-term predictor and the coder use conditioning on a small number of contexts. The long-term prediction is based on an algorithm for R-R interval estimation. Several QRS detection algorithms are investigated to select a low complexity and reliable detection algorithm. The coding of prediction residuals uses primarily the Golomb-Rice (GR) codes, but, to improve the coding results, escape codes GR-ESC are used in some contexts for a limited number of samples. Experimental results indicate the good overall performance of the lossless ECG compression algorithms (reducing the storage needs from 12 to about 3-4 bits per sample). Based on our statistical investigation of a typical three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet codec, we present a unified mathematical model to describe its operational rate-distortion (RD) behavior. The quantization distortion of the reconstructed video frames is assessed by tracking the quantization noise along the 3-D wavelet decomposition trees. The coding bit-rate is estimated for a class of embedded video coders. Experimental results show that the model captures sequence characteristics accurately and reveals the relationship between wavelet decomposition levels and the overall RD performance. After being trained with offline RD data, the model enables accurate prediction of real RD performance of video codecs and therefore can enable optimal RD adaptation of the encoding parameters according to various network conditions.

A new lossless image coding method competitive with the best known image coding techniques in terms of efficiency and complexity is suggested. It is based on adaptive color space transform, adaptive context coding, and improved prediction of pixel values of image color components. Examples of application of the new algorithm to a set of standard images are given and comparison with known algorithms is performed.
