With the adoption of values, principles, practices, tools and processes from Agile, Lean, and DevOps, knowledge preservation has become a serious issue because documentation is largely left out. We identify two questions that are relevant for knowledge acquisition and distribution concerning design decisions, rationales, or reasons for code change. The first concerns which knowledge is required upfront to start a project. The second question concerns continuation after initial development and addresses which knowledge is required by those who deploy, use or maintain a software product. We evaluate two relevant approaches for alleviating the issues, which are 'Just enough Upfront' and 'Executable Documentation' with a total of 25 related artifacts. For the evaluation, we conducted a case study supported by a literature review, organizational and project metrics, and a survey. We looked into closed source-code and closed classified source-code. We found two conclusive remarks. First, git commit messages typically contain what has been changed but not why source-code has been changed. Design decisions, rationale, or reasons for code change should be saved as close as possible to the source-code with Git Pull Requests. Second, knowledge about a software product is not only written down in artifacts but is also a social construction between team members.

In continuous software development, a wide range of tools are used for all steps in the life cycle of a software product. Information about the software product is distributed across all those tools and not stored in a central repository. To better understand the software products, the following media elements must be taken into account: the types of information, the tools, tool-stacks and ecosystems to manage the (types of) information, and the amount of structure. In the tile, "tools" refers to the phrase "the medium is the message", coined by McLuhan and Fiore (1967) pointing that the medium should be subject of investigation as well as the content of the message. In this paper the tools include tool stacks, ecosystems, the types of information and amount of structure;they define the content of the message. Our approach to present relevant information to different stakeholders is rooted in understanding and utilizing these aspects. In this respect, the amount of structural variety of information defines the value for information creation and retrieval, including the tools to process that information. Documentation is considered an information type that is processed through tools in a software development ecosystem.

A mapping study on documentation in continuous software development

Context: With an increase in Agile, Lean, and DevOps software methodologies over the last years (collectively referred to as continuous software development (CSD)), we have observed that documentation is often poor. Objective: This work aims at collecting studies on documentation challenges, documentation practices, and tools that can support documentation in CSD. Method: A systematic mapping study was conducted to identify and analyze research on documentation in CSD, covering publications between 2001 and 2019. Results: A total of 63 studies were selected. We found 40 studies related to documentation practices and challenges, and 23 studies related to tools used in CSD. The challenges include: informal documentation is hard to understand, documentation is considered as waste, productivity is measured by working software only, documentation is out-of-sync with the software and there is a short-term focus. The practices include: non-written and informal communication, the usage of development artifacts for documentation, and the use of architecture frameworks. We also made an inventory of numerous tools that can be used for documentation purposes in CSD. Overall, we recommend the usage of executable documentation, modern tools and technologies to retrieve information and transform it into documentation, and the practice of minimal documentation upfront combined with detailed design for knowledge transfer afterwards. Conclusion: It is of paramount importance to increase the quantity and quality of documentation in CSD. While this remains challenging, practitioners will benefit from applying the identified practices and tools in order to mitigate the stated challenges.

continuous software development enables the early identification of potential problems in terms of software code, system integration, and team communication. In the field of software engineering education, usually, software development depends on the particular methodology for evaluating the technical performance of students in terms of software code and system integration of software development. Actually, GitHub is used for mining the information stored in GitHub's event logs, trying to understand how its students to performance on software development. However, there are few studies and experiences describing how GitHub can support continuous software development. In this paper, we present a case study in two software engineering courses at the University of Talca using GitHubTracker. GitHubTracker is a tool for improving continuous software development using the main GitHub's features. The results indicate that student teams were more effective in terms of performance and productivity than the other teams.

Context: As software applications become more complex and competition between companies demands shorter time-to-market, the methodologies to develop these applications needs to adapt to this new environment of continuous change. New strategies are required to allow effective management of changing requirements, continuous deliveries, testing, integration, etc. software reuse emerges as a potential solution to these demands. This work presents results from a systematic mapping study aimed at assessing the use of software reuse in the context of continuous software development (CSD). Objective: To identify, analyse, and classify the published works in order to provide an overview of current challenges and the trends in the application of systematic software reuse to the continuous software development. Method: We use a systematic mapping study, posing a set of questions to map the research space, defining exclusion/inclusion criteria and developing a classification schema. We limit our study to peer-reviewed works published up to December 2016. Results: Our study includes a set of fifteen works. We classified the works according to reuse processes, CSD activities and type of research. Component-based development is the most frequent reuse process, while the three CSD activities (Deployment, Integration and Testing) are mentioned equally. Quality, productivity and reduction of costs are the reuse effects more reported. Conclusions: We have not found previous systematic reviews in this field. The main outcome is that we do not find causal relations between reuse processes and CSD activities. The effect of reuse does not relate to the context of the experience reported. There is a lack of empirical evidence and reported data. This is a poorly investigated area offering a promising domain for future research.

We have been observing an ongoing trend in the software engineering domain towards development practices that rely heavily on verbal communication and small, closely-interacting teams. Among others, approaches like Scrum, Lean software development, and DevOps fall under this category. We refer to such development practices as continuous software development (ConSD). Some core principles of ConSD are working in short iterations with frequent delivery, striving for an optimal balance between effectiveness and efficiency, and amplify learning in the development team. In such a context, many traditional patterns of software specification, documentation and knowledge preservation are not applicable anymore. To explore relevant topics, opinions, challenges and chances around specification, documentation and knowledge preservation in ConSD, we conducted a workshop at the 22nd European Conference on Pattern Languages of Programs (EuroPLoP), held in Germany in July 2017. The workshop participants came from the industry and academia. In this report, we present the results of the workshop. Among others, we elaborate on the difference between specification and documentation, the special role of architecture in ConSD in general, and architecture decision documentation in particular, and the importance of tooling that combines aspects of development, project management, and quality assurance. Furthermore, we describe typical issues with documentation and identify means to efficiently and effectively organize specification and documentation tasks in ConSD.

Driving the Technology Value Stream by Analyzing App Reviews

An emerging feature of mobile application software is the need to quickly produce new versions to solve problems that emerged in previous versions. This helps adapt to changing user needs and preferences. In a continuous software development process, the user reviews collected by the apps themselves can play a crucial role to detect which components need to be reworked. This paper proposes a novel framework that enables software companies to drive their technology value stream based on the feedback (or reviews) provided by the end-users of an application. The proposed end-to-end framework exploits different Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks to best understand the needs and goals of the end users. We also provide a thorough and in-depth analysis of the framework, the performance of each of the modules, and the overall contribution in driving the technology value stream. An analysis of reviews with sixteen popular Android Play Store applications from various genres over a long period of time provides encouraging evidence of the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Currently, many financial organizations must undergo a digital transformation. In this study, we investigated a transformation in a Norwegian fintech company with the aim of understanding how the tasks performed by business development can be better aligned with the work of cross-functional development teams. Specifically, we examined the enablers and barriers to coordination between business development and software product development in large-scale agile software development. The organization under study had 25 software product development teams that followed an in-house agile model. We collected data by conducting 13 interviews and collecting various documents. Our findings suggest that having cross-functional fora, having a common understanding of what business development is, and coaching the whole organization to be more agile can improve coordination between business and software development.

Traditionally, the quality of a software or system architecture has been evaluated in the early stages of the development process using architecture quality evaluation methods. Emergent approaches like Industry 4.0 require continuous monitoring of both run-time and development-time quality properties, in contrast to traditional systems where quality is evaluated at specific milestones using techniques such as project reviews. Considering the dynamics and minimum down-time imposed by the industrial production domain, it must also be ensured that Industry 4.0 system evaluations are continuously performed with high confidence and with as much automation as possible, using simulations, for instance. In this regard, there is a need to develop new methods for continuously monitoring and evaluating the quality properties of software-based systems for Industry 4.0, which must be supported by automated quality evaluation techniques. In this research we analyze traditional architecture evaluation methods and Industry 4.0 scenarios, and propose an approach based on Digital Twins and simulations to continuously evaluate runtime quality aspects of the architecture and systems of industrial production plants. The evaluation is based on the instantiation of our approach for a concrete demand of an automation plant in the automotive domain.

Security is increasingly recognized as an important aspect of software development processes. Improving processes for security in agile teams is very important to streamline the focus on security and keep the agility of the software development process. In Visma we use data to drive improvement of security services provided to the software teams. The improvement process involves changing the services or their structures after some period of usage and experience with it, driven by data collected during operations. We systematically identify the areas that need changes in order to become more valuable for the development teams and for the security program. In this paper we have described the improvement process used on the security static analysis service in Visma, the data we have used for that, how we extracted this data from the Static Application Security Testing (SAST) tool, the lessons learned and also provide some guidelines to other organizations that would like to use this method in their own services.
