Enhancing the effectiveness of joint production and maintenance scheduling based on a multi-agent system and a Pigouvian approach of externalities

Joint maintenance and production scheduling is very important and challenging in the smart manufacturing field. Multi-agent systems based on contract-net protocol (CNP) have been proposed to solve this scheduling problem, to reduce complexity, increase flexibility, and enhance robustness. However, these multi-agent approaches use myopic behaviors which can cause loss of performance. This study aims to improve the CNP-based approach of joint production and maintenance scheduling by reducing loss of performance due to agent myopia. Based on a Pigouvian approach of externalities, a new multi-agent scheduling system RCEMP (Regulator, Customers, Environment, Maintainers, and Producers) was developed to improve the multi-agent system SCEMP (Supervisor, Customers, Environment, Maintainers, and Producers). We have implemented the SCEMP and RCEMP approaches with Python programming language, simulated them with a fixed set of problem instances and compared their performances with the Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. These comparisons show that the approach in terms of externalities improves significantly the performances of the CNP-based approach in terms of regular classical optimality criteria of scheduling, maintenance costs, and execution times.

Dynamic-distributed decisions and sharing protocol for fair resource sharing in collaborative network

This research addresses distributed decisions for dynamic partnership reformation to enhance fairness and efficiency among collaborative networked enterprises (CNEs). The aim of this research is to investigate a new sharing protocol (SP) to control CNEs. Most CNE studies are designed under a centralized SP. However, centralized SPs appear to be unfeasible or inadequate due to enterprises' operating environments and local objectives;therefore, each CNE requires a distributed decision-making mechanism. Furthermore, market globalization and competition necessitate rapid responses to market changes and give rise to two major concerns about CNEs: (1) how can collaborations be rendered re-configurable to dynamically capture and adapt to market patterns;and (2) how can the resources of all CNEs be utilized fairly among enterprises, ensuring mutual benefits? Therefore, Dynamic-Distributed Sharing protocol ((DSP)-S-2), which is inspired by the principles of Collaborative Control Theory and contract net protocol, is proposed to address these concerns. The performance of (DSP)-S-2 is evaluated by comparing with (1) static-centralized SP, (2) static-distributed SP, and (3) dynamic-centralized SP. The experimental results show that (DSP)-S-2 performs at least equally or better than centralized and static SPs in terms of total profit, fairness, scalability, and communication overhead.

The paper presents a new approach for robots tasks allocation and scheduling in order to minimize the total execution time (makespan) of a mission while satisfying all the tasks constraints. This approach is implemented in a multi-agent architecture for remote control of heterogeneous multi-robot systems. The agents controlling the robots coordinate their actions and cooperate to achieve the assigned mission. The proposed approach is carried out in two phases. During the first phase, a negotiation process (based on the contract-net protocol) is carried out between the agents of the system to allocate the tasks to the robot proposing the minimal execution time (cost). In the second phase, a local scheduling process based on priority rules is carried out by the corresponding agent for each allocated task in order to minimize its inoccupation (idle) time.

A Combinatorial Reverse Auction Trading Infrastructure - CRATI is designed and implemented as an agent-based system. Two basic building blocks Java Agent Development Framework (JADE) and an Open Source Java Constraint Programming Library (Choco Solver) are used to facilitate agent interactions and an optimization task. For our purpose, it is shown that auction Winner Determination Problem (WDP) can suitably be represented as a weighted set covering problem instance whose solution gives the decided winners of the auction process. In order to realize the system, a variation of contract net protocol is designed and implemented to handle auctions that occur in the platform from start to finish.

As more and more functionally similar Web Services from providers with different Quality of Service (QoS) are available on the Web, a selection needs to be made to determine which services are to participate in a given composite service. Moreover, QoS becomes one of the most important factors for Web Service selection. Indeed, one of the main assets of service-orientation is composition to develop higher level services, so-called composite services, by re-using existing services. However, in distributed environments, the use of services without any quality guarantees from the service providers can negatively affect a composite service. Particularly, a system composed of services that ensures the QoS of individual services which should achieve optimal Composite QoS (CQoS) is always a problem during the search. Meanwhile, accuracy and speed of Web Service selection come to be the new barriers. This paper deals with the selection of composite Web services on the base of Multi-Agents negotiation. The objective of these agents is to find out the best CQoS. The proposed Multi-Agents architecture is compared to an existing approach in terms of execution time. The experiments have demonstrated that our approach takes a largely lower time.

The focus of this paper is on interaction protocols and topologies of multi-agent systems for task allocation in manufacturing applications. Resource agents in manufacturing are members of a network whose possible logical topologies and governing interaction protocol influence the scheduling and control in the multi-agent system. Four models are identified in the paper, each having specific rules and characteristics for scheduling and task allocation. The models use either a standard interaction method such as contract-net protocol (CNP), or a different method proposed in this research. A Java-based multi-agent system was developed to simulate different scenarios of task allocation and to compare the four models in terms of performance indicators. Data from an industrial case study involving a manufacturing shop floor was used to evaluate the performance of the models. The results indicate meaningful differences between the four models, and highlight the performance potential of a proposed task allocation model.

The efficiency and validity of product and component reuse should be evaluated in relation to the balance among utility value, environmental load, and cost throughout the entire product life cycle from the viewpoint of society as well as that of individual users. This paper proposes an evaluation method for reuse focusing on this balance from both societal and individual perspectives. In order to evaluate these balances, a multi-agent consumer model representing users with different preferences for products is introduced and an algorithm to ascertain a near-optimal reuse solution is developed. A simplified simulation of reuse is conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of our method. (C) 2009 CIRP.

This paper examines an agent-mediated collaborative negotiation framework for e-commerce. This paper specifically focuses on travel industry. Individual customers and travel agencies will both be able to benefit from the usage of the system, since its negotiation strategies will not depend on price only, but several attributes, such as the number of rooms, the required facilities, and so on. The key issues in automating negotiation are the negotiation protocol, the negotiation object, and the negotiation strategy. Our paper addresses these issues by discussing the development of an agent-mediated e-commerce system using the FEPA compatible agent development framework, the JADE platform. Finally we provide our conclusions and discuss possible future work.

Ant colony intelligence in multi-agent dynamic manufacturing scheduling

This study aims at building an efficient agent-based dynamic scheduling for real-world manufacturing systems with various products, processes, and disturbances. Ant colony intelligence (ACI) is proposed to be combined with local agent coordination so as to make autonomous agents adaptive to changing circumstances and to give rise to efficient global performance. The work here differs from other dynamic scheduling research in two areas: (1) a more generic and realistic manufacturing model with multiple product types, multiple/ parallel multi-purpose machines with sequence-dependent setup constraints, and various dynamic disturbances is used, (2) ACI integrated with both machine agents and job agents to solve not only the task allocation problem, but also the task sequencing problem. The implementation of the aforementioned issues in a multi-agent system (MAS) is discussed. Simulation results show that, for most of the performance measures, a MAS integrated with well-designed ant-inspired coordination performs well compared to a MAS using dispatching rules. There is a growing recognition that current manufacturing enterprises must be agile, and the use of virtual enterprise (VE) is becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. It is a very important and difficult activity in forming a virtual enterprise to select appropriate business partners, because each enterprise considers not only pursuing its profit but also sharing the risk to join the virtual enterprise. At first we propose a VE coalition algorithm based on multi-agent paradigm. Then we develop a computer simulation model to evaluate the proposed method by forming a virtual enterprise through multiple negotiations amongst several potential members in the negotiation domain. Finally, we clarify the coalition dynamism with the negotiation process. The effectiveness of the proposed concept in the agile manufacturing is discussed with several simulation experiments.
