Simple structure for a high-performance three-dimensional tracking filter

The structure of a three-dimensional tracking filter in a rotating sensor frame was discussed. The three-dimensional estimator consisted of three independent filters whose state included position, velocity and acceleration along the tree axes in the rotating frame sensor frame. The line-of-sight models for the target acceleration were found to be identical in all three axes and independent. Analysis shows that filter structure remained unchanged during the replacement of basic exponetially correlated acceleration model by more complicated models.

MODULAR SIMULATION-MODEL FOR A WIND TURBINE SYSTEM

A mathematical simulation model for a large horizontal axis wind turbine system is presented. The model is intended for simulation of the synchronization of the wind turbine generator against the utility grid and the operation of the wind turbine system under different wind conditions and with different control algorithms. Particular attention has been given to the modularization. The model is divided into subsystems to make it easy to modify the model and adapt it to systems of similar type. The interactive simulation package SIMNON, which allows good structuring and programming in a high level language, has been used.

Rapid industrial expansions in recent years have triggered the proliferation of diverse sensitive loads on electrical power networks. Fragile, delicate loads require their stipulated power fed in, without excessive perturbations in the input voltage. These loads are vulnerable to even minor voltage variations, degrading performance with undesirable repercussions. Susceptibility of delicate loads is apparent, when they are deployed in lifecritical support systems, besides the need for information assurance in cyber physical systems. Series active filters are one of the expedient measures to bolster the resilience of the sensitive loads to voltage deviations. This paper proffers a novel technique for the monitoring and control of active filters. Performance analysis of prototype versions of the proposed Fundamental Voltage Peak Detection (FVPD) controller, for series active filters, was compared against conventional control mechanisms. Supplemental experimentation and results of simulation, with MATLAB Simulink platform, re-affirmed the superior performance of the FVPD algorithm over the extant control algorithms, under varying system operational conditions.

State and Space Vectors of the 5-Phase2-Level VSI

The paper proposes a general description system of the five-phase two-level inverter. The two base methods are presented and discussed. The first one is based on the standard space vector transformation, while the other uses state vectors which enable the definition of the basic physical quantities of the inverter: current and voltage. The proposed notation system offers a general simplification of vector identification. It comprises a standardized proposal of notation and vector marking, which may be extremely useful for the specification of inverter states. The described notation system makes it possible to reach correlation between state and space vectors. It presents space and state vectors using the same digits. These properties suggest that the proposed notation system is a useful mathematical tool and may be really suitable in designing control algorithms. This mathematical tool was verified during simulation tests performed with the use of the Simulation Platform for Power Electronics Systems-PLECS.

Energy-Storage-Based Smart Electrical Infrastructure and Regenerative Braking Energy Management in AC-Fed Railways with Neutral Zones

This paper presents a modified power supply system based on the current alternating current (AC)-fed railways with neutral zones that can further improve the eco-friendliness and smart level of railways. The modified system complements the existing infrastructure with additional energy-storage-based smart electrical infrastructure. This infrastructure comprises power electronic devices with energy storage system connected in parallel to both sides of each neutral zone in the traction substations, power electronic devices connected in parallel to both sides of each neutral zone in section posts, and an energy management system. The description and functions of such a modified system are outlined in this paper. The system allows for the centralized- and distributed-control of different functions via an energy management system. In addition, a control algorithm is proposed, based on the modified system for regenerative braking energy utilization. This would ensure that all the regenerative braking energy in the whole railway electrical system is used more efficiently. Finally, a modified power supply system with eight power supply sections is considered to be a case study;furthermore, the advantages of the proposed system and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm are verified.

Analytical Framework for Precise Relative Motion in Low Earth Orbits

This work presents a practical and efficient analytical framework for the precise modeling of the relative motion in low Earth orbits. Developed to support the design and verification of relative guidance navigation and control algorithms devoted to spacecraft rendezvous for active debris removal applications, only the orbital perturbation due to nonspherically symmetric mass distribution is considered. The relative motion is modeled in mean relative orbital elements, revisiting the available formulations to include the first-order expansion of the effects due to any even zonal harmonics and the second-order expansion of the unperturbed and J2 terms. Mean/osculating orbital element conversions are obtained by merging a second-order Hamiltonian approach applied to the J2 problem with the Kaula linear perturbation method for the remaining terms of the geopotential. The paper describes the main building blocks of the framework as well as their interfaces because the key aspect to achieve precision is to set up a fully consistent environment. The results show the achievable accuracy under realistic operational conditions for possible guidance and navigation applications.

Wind-Tunnel Evaluation for an Active Sting Damper Using Multimodal Neural Networks

A harmful oscillation occurring in a wind-tunnel test often leads to the degradation of data quality and the limitation of the test envelope. Therefore, it needs to be avoided. With the aim of solving the vibration problem of the long cantilever sting used in wind tunnels, an active sting damper based on piezoelectric stacks is designed and its principle of controlling vibration is analyzed in this paper. To improve the damping effect and ensure the safety of wind-tunnel tests, a controller based on neural networks that is able to suppress multimodal vibration is detailed and established. A hardware platform composed of various instruments is developed, and related testing software is built to evaluate the damper as well as the control algorithm. Finally, broadband excitation and transonic wind-tunnel tests are carried out to verify the capability of the whole damping system. Experimental results indicate that the amplitude of vibration is dramatically reduced and the test angles of attack are enlarged, which show the superiority of the damper and the control algorithm.

Understanding the combustion mode transition from CDC to RCCI and RCCI to CDC - An experimental approach

This article presents an experimental understanding of combustion mode transition from conventional diesel combustion (CDC) mode to reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion mode. In the current study the variations in combustion, performance, and emissions during the mode transition were investigated and accordingly a dual fuel control algorithm for achieving smooth transition between CDC and RCCI com-bustion modes was developed. Experimental data are presented for CDC with diesel and RCCI with Gasoline/ Diesel at 1600 rev/min, 25 N.m torque only, considering the data size and ease of understanding the mode transition. Nine steps have been adopted to switch from CDC to RCCI combustion mode. The operating variables such as number of diesel injections, injected diesel mass between the injections, gasoline energy fraction, diesel start of injection, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow rate have been altered to switch from CDC to RCCI. Changes in combustion, performance, and emissions have been recorded and analyzed at each operating variable to determine the optimal path for smooth combustion mode transition. A similar approach has been extended to medium and high loads to obtain the optimal path. Finally, all the optimal paths have been collated to develop calibrated maps for operating the chosen test engine from CDC to RCCI and RCCI to CDC modes smoothly.

Evaluation of Machine-Learning Approaches in the Automation of Irrigation Canals Using a Variable-Height Weir

Automatic check structures can be important for water distribution in irrigation networks. In this research, a control algorithm was developed for a variable height whirling (VHW) weir, as a regulating structure equipped with a control mechanism. A local feedback controller was established for adjusting the flow depth upstream of the weir within a marginal target range. The control performance of the VHW weir was investigated using two methods: (1) K nearest neighbor (KNN);and (2) artificial neural network (ANN). The required data for methods were compiled in a long trapezoidal canal using different water depth targets. The inputs consisted of the discharge at the canal entrance, the variation of the discharge in three sequential periods, the water level deviation from the target value, and the offtake discharge. The model output was the set point of the instantaneous weir angle value, which represents the crest weir height, for maintaining the water depth within the target range. Different statistical indicators were employed to investigate the control performance. The results indicated that the ANN models, which were applied to cases with and without offtake in operation, provided 0.95 and 0.93 correlation coefficients, respectively. Also, the proposed neural model performed slightly better than the KNN algorithm, which yielded marginally higher error in output predictions.

MPPT based on a novel load segmentations structure for PV applications

The main disadvantage of photovoltaic (PV) systems is the mismatch between load and generation profiles. To overcome this disadvantage, it is either connected to battery bank or connected to the utility grid via inverters. While the battery choice is expensive and produces contaminating elements, the grid -connected mode is the most common choice. However, the inverters represent high percentage of the system cost that affect its potential to be a competitive economic replacement for other conventional energy sources. In addition, interfacing different users to the grid using inverters increase the total har-monics distortion (THD) and reduce the power quality of the grid. Moreover, exporting surplus energy generated from PV during off-peak periods with lower tariff reduces the economic effectiveness of PV systems. This paper proposes a segmented structure of the electric thermal loads with control algorithm that can achieve the MPPT objectives with no need for inverters. Moreover, with the right selection of PV size, it is possible to be locally consumed each generated kWh of energy without the need to export any to the main grid with low tariff. The segments of the electric thermal load that satisfy the MPP condition are connected to the PV while the rest segments are connected to main grid via set of electromagnetic relays. A simulation of the proposed structure and control algorithm was performed. The results shows that accurate MPPT was achieved according to the number of load segments.
