A simplified sliding-mode control method for multi-level transformerless DVR

Here, a finite-control-set sliding-mode control (FCS-SMC) method is proposed for single-phase three-level T-type inverter-based transformerless dynamic voltage restorers (TDVRs). The inherent advantages of SMC (fast dynamic response and high robustness) are combined with FCS concept to increase the effectiveness of the method in achieving the desired control objectives. First, the use of FCS eliminates the modulator requirement, which reduces the design complexity in the practical implementation. Second, an effective method based on charging/discharging conditions of DC capacitors is proposed for balancing capacitor voltages using relevant switching state rather than combining DC voltage error with the inductor current error through a suitable weighting factor in forming the cost function. Therefore, the weighting factor necessity in the control algorithm is eliminated. Finally, the steady-state error in the compensation voltage is eliminated by the proportional-resonant (PR) controller. The studied T-type inverter-based TDVR topology offers an alternative solution to the existing DVR topologies. Experimental results are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed FCS-SMC method in maintaining the load voltage at the desired level despite the voltage sags, swells, and distortions occurring in the grid voltage.

Hierarchical control of a space-based deployable manipulator using fuzzy logic

Application of the fuzzy logic intelligent control of space-based systems has received relatively less attention compared to conventional control procedures. Basic concepts involved in development of a hierarchical control system using fuzzy logic are explained. Next, fuzzy logic is applied to control a novel two-link robotic arm, composed of revolute and prismatic joints, supported by a mobile base traversing along an orbiting platform. The control system that is developed has three levels. A conventional controller, consisting of the feedback linearization technique combined with proportional-derivative control is used in the bottom level of the hierarchical system, to control the servomotors of the robot. A second layer consists of a servo-expert that preprocesses the high-resolution information coming from joint encoders and extracts the status of the system. A third, intelligent layer is added at the top of the hierarchy to complete the control structure. The main purpose of the top level is to tune the parameters of the crisp (conventional) controller to improve the response of the system. A decision table is developed offline, for tuning the parameters of the crisp (nonfuzzy) controller, which considerably reduces the real-time computational effort. Typical pick-and-place results from the robot are presented that show that extra tuning can significantly improve the performance of the manipulator.

Development of a new fault-tolerant induction motor control strategy using an enhanced equivalent circuit model

Variable speed induction motor drives operating with an open circuit phase fault generally have a high harmonic current content and impose a large torque ripple on the load. These effects result from the unbalanced nature of the faulted machine, and under these conditions, the effects of machine and converter non-linearities become more pronounced. It is important to include these non-linearities when modelling drive systems which may operate under fault conditions, and developing fault ride-through control algorithms. This paper proposes a modelling method for induction motor drives which includes machine saturation and space harmonics effects as well as inverter non-linearities, which does not require significant computation times. Results from an experimental test rig are presented to validate the model. The second part of the paper describes how the model was used to develop a new fault ride through control strategy for a voltage-fed vector controlled drive. Experimental results demonstrate the improved drive behaviour with an open-circuit winding fault when controlled with the new strategy.

Virtual Trajectory Augmented Landing control Based on Dual Quaternion for Lunar Lander

A pinpoint soft landing with a low touchdown velocity is critical for a lunar lander in the terminal landing phase, particularly with respect to scientific exploration missions. However, the main descent thruster of the lander is usually equipped on one side along the body axis, whereas reaction thrusters for attitude control are fixed in three axes. This causes the translational dynamics and the rotational dynamics of the lunar lander to be mutually coupled. In this study, a new force-torque sequential control law is introduced to resolve the coupling effect. To further improve the coupled motion, a virtual landing trajectory augmented control law is designed. The virtual trajectory is represented as a virtual quaternion and is augmented as a command to the lander's position update using the dual quaternion. A combined augmented landing control algorithm is newly proposed to incorporate the virtual trajectory commands into the force-torque sequential control law. Numerical simulation results with some cases by the MonteCarlo method show that the designed augmented control system enables a terminal soft landing with less fuel consumption.

Kinematic Steering Law for Conically Constrained Torque-Limited Spacecraft Attitude control

A novel algorithm for attitude control of a spacecraft subjected to conically constrained inclusion and exclusion regions using a kinematic steering law and a rate-based attitude servo system is presented. The tracking errors are defined using switched modified Rodrigues parameters to yield, leveraging the nonuniqueness of the parametrization, a nonsingular description. Lyapunov theory and logarithmic barrier potential functions are used to derive a kinematic steering law suitable for both attitude regulation and tracking scenarios. Conditions for constraint enforcement under limited-control-torque capability are studied. Numerical examples of a regulation and a tracking problem are shown. A Monte Carlo simulation is performed to show constraint avoidance with a variety of worst-case initial conditions under bounded-torque control capabilities.

Precise Modeling for Reducing Output Voltage control Error of RX-Sensorless IPT System

This paper presents RX-Sensorless technologies required in a self-induced type of low power wireless power transfer system. Recently, apart from the fields of smartphone and electrical vehicles which have been arduously studied for application of wireless power transfer, wireless power transfer technologies are being applied to various fields. Among them, there is a very rapidly increasing demand for low power systems in displays, body implant medical devices, drones, electrical kickboards and so on. In order to acquire portability of RX side of low power systems, the most critical factors are power density and efficiency. For this purpose, there have been very much ongoing studies to improve the power density on the RX side. Among various research, most frequently used types of methods involve derivation of output voltage using the physical quantity on the TX side while removing sensors on the RX side. However, in the modeling process to derive output voltage, they fail to properly reflect the parasite components of wireless power transfer and also due to the lack of measures in case of being out of the range of resonance frequency, there tends to be a high error in the output voltage which raises an issue. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest a model which reflects the parasite resistance components and the permeability rate of medium for the TX/RX pads of wireless power transfer systems. By reflecting winding losses and eddy current losses of TX/RX pads to a model, it is possible to reflect the parasite resistance components and using the Neumann formula, it is possible to reflect it to the medium between RX/TX pads. As a result, based on the derived model, it is possible to control the output voltage. Prototypes of hardware are designed and implemented for verifications. According to the computer simulation results and test results, output voltage estimates yield an error in the range of less than or equal to 8% and model-based output voltage control also shows

Semi-active friction dampers for seismic control of structures

Semi-active control systems have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years because these systems can operate on battery power alone, proving advantageous during seismic events when the main power source of the structure may likely fail. The behavior of semi-active devices is often highly non-linear and requires suitable and efficient control algorithm. This paper presents the comparative study and performance of variable semi-active friction dampers by using recently proposed predictive control law with direct output feedback. In this control law, the variable slip force of semi-active variable friction damper is kept slightly lower than the critical friction force, which allows the damper to remain in the slip state during an earthquake, resulting in improved energy dissipation capability. This control algorithm is able to produce a continuous and smooth slip forces for a variable friction damper. The numerical examples include a structure controlled with multiple variable semi-active friction dampers and with multiple passive friction dampers. A parameter, gain multiplier defined as the ratio of damper force to critical damper control force, is investigated under four different real earthquake ground motions, which plays an important role in the present control algorithm of the damper. The numerically evaluated optimum parametric value is considered for the analysis of the structure with dampers. The numerical results of the variable friction dampers show better performance over the passive dampers in reducing the seismic response of structures.

PRECISION ATTITUDE-control FOR TETHERED SATELLITES

Tethered spacecraft are particularly well suited to serve as isolation platforms for space-borne observatories. It has previously been shown that, due to the relatively large tether force, conventional means of performing attitude control for tethered satellites are inefficient for any mission with pointing requirements more stringent than about 1 deg. A particularly effective method of implementing attitude control for tethered satellites is to use the tether tension force to generate control moments by moving the tether attach point relative to the subsatellite center of mass. This paper presents the development of a precision pointing control algorithm for tethered satellites and the simulation of the control system with laboratory hardware. The control algorithm consists of a linear quadratic regulator feedback law and a Kalman filter. The control algorithm has been shown to regulate the vehicle orientation to within 0.60 arcsec rms. This level of precision was achieved only after including a mass center estimator and accurately modeling the effects of the nonlinear attach point motion actuator.

This paper presents a hybrid state-space self-tuning design methodology using dual-rate sampling for suboptimal digital adaptive control of attitude and momentum management for the Space Station. This new hybrid adaptive control scheme combines an on-line recursive estimation algorithm for indirectly identifying the parameters of a continuous-time system from the available fast-rate sampled data of the inputs and states and a controller synthesis algorithm for indirectly finding the slow-rate suboptimal digital controller from the designed optimal analog controller. The proposed method enables the development of digitally implementable control algorithms for the robust control of Space Station Freedom with unknown environmental disturbances and slowly time-varying dynamics

Simplified Feedback Linearization control of Three-Phase Photovoltaic Inverter With an LCL Filter

The conventional grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter is controlled by a dual-loop control strategy in synchronous reference frame, and the controllers are designed for steady-state operating point based on the small signal model by neglecting the high-order and coupling terms. However, in an LCL filter, the coupling terms are complicated due to the dq transformation which will affect the dynamic performance. In this paper, an innovative simplified feedback linearization (SFL) control strategy is proposed for the PV inverter with the LCL filter, which offers satisfactory performance, particularly, in decoupling the control system, improving the dynamic performance, and enhancing the adaptability. Furthermore, the SFL controllers are simpler than the high-order tracking controllers used in conventional feedback linearization control. The detailed simplification process and accurate transfer functions for SFL control strategy have been presented, and the performance comparisons between the proposed SFL control strategy and the classical dual-loop method are carried out to show the characteristics of the proposed control algorithm. Finally, a laboratory prototype of a 150-kW PV inverter with the LCL filter has been implemented to test the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The proposed SFL control strategy can also be applied to a higher order system or other power converters.
