A straightforward logistic method for feeding a fed-batch baker's yeast culture

The aim of this work was to find a straightforward, low-cost method for nutrient medium delivery during fed-batch cultivation of baker's yeast;a method that provides a high specific growth rate, a high biomass yield, and a high dough-leavening ability. The time profile for the inflow of the nutrient medium, g(t), is a logistic model which takes the form of g(t) = a/(1 + be(-ct)), with a, b and c standing for its parameters. The initial values of a, b and c were calculated considering the results of a baker's yeast process where dissolved oxygen tension was used as a control parameter of medium inflow. A method was developed for modifying the parameters of the initial model so as to obtain a formula that would cause the inflow of the nutrient medium to maximize the criterion K(K = Y mu), where Y stands for yeast biomass yield and mu denotes specific growth rate. The parameters of the modified model depended on initial biomass concentration. The relation was described by a logarithmic function and incorporated into the control algorithm. This algorithm produced a biomass yield exceeding 0.55 g g(-1) and a high dough-leavening ability. The method proposed is recommendable for small and medium-sized firms producing baker's yeast. Formation-Flying Guidance for Cooperative Radar Deception

Radar range deception by generating a phantom target using cooperative electronic combat air vehicles is considered. A generalized kinematic framework for the required formation-flying is developed from the principles of line-of-sight guidance. Position, speed, and lateral acceleration expressions relating the phantom target and the vehicles are derived. The results are further analyzed for advanced missions of infinite time deception and minimum control effort deception. A control law for bringing the vehicles to a deceiving formation from any given initial arrangement is presented. The scenario of generating multiple phantom targets is discussed and analyzed for two or more radars. Simulations are carried out for homogeneous and heterogeneous groups of vehicles, showing the viability of the proposed methodology.

Subscale flight-testing provides a means to validate both dynamic models and mitigation technologies in the high-risk flight conditions associated with aircraft loss of control. The Airborne Subscale Transport Aircraft Research (AirSTAR) facility was designed to be a flexible and efficient research facility to address this type of flight-testing. Over the last several years (2009-2011) it has been used to perform 58 research flights with an unmanned, remotely-piloted, dynamically-scaled airplane. This paper will present an overview of the facility and its architecture and summarize the experimental data collected. All flights to date have been conducted within visual range of a safety observer. Current plans for the facility include expanding the test volume to altitudes and distances well beyond visual range. The architecture and instrumentation changes associated with this upgrade will also be presented.

Closed-loop artificial pancreas using subcutaneous glucose sensing and insulin delivery and a model predictive control algorithm: preliminary studies in Padova and Montpellier

New effort has been made to develop closed-loop glucose control, using subcutaneous (SC) glucose sensing and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) from a pump, and a control algorithm. An approach based on a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm has been utilized during closed-loop control in type 1 diabetes patients. Here we describe the preliminary clinical experience with this approach. Six type 1 diabetes patients (three in each of two clinical investigation centers in Padova and Montpellier), using CSII, aged 36 +/- 8 and 48 +/- 6 years, duration of diabetes 12 +/- 8 and 29 +/- 4 years, hemoglobin A1c 7.4% +/- 0.1% and 7.3% +/- 0.3%, body mass index 23.2 +/- 0.3 and 28.4 +/- 2.2 kg/m(2), respectively, were studied on two occasions during 22 h overnight hospital admissions 2-4 weeks apart. A Freestyle Navigator(R) continuous glucose monitor and an OmniPod insulin pump were applied in each trial. Admission 1 used open-loop control, while admission 2 employed closed-loop control using our MPC algorithm. In Padova, two out of three subjects showed better performance with the closed-loop system compared to open loop. Altogether, mean overnight plasma glucose (PG) levels were 134 versus 111 mg/dl during open loop versus closed loop, respectively. The percentage of time spent at PG > 140 mg/dl was 45% versus 12%, while postbreakfast mean PG was 165 versus 156 mg/dl during open loop versus closed loop, respectively. Also, in Montpellier, two patients out of three showed a better glucose control during closed-loop trials. Avoidance of nocturnal hypoglycemic excursions was a clear benefit during algorithm-guided insulin delivery in all cases. This preliminary set of studies demonstrates that closed-loop control based entirely on SC glucose sensing and insulin delivery is feasible and can be applied to improve glucose control in patients with type 1 diabetes, although the algorithm needs to be further improved to achieve better glycemic control.

Sea lamprey orient toward a source of a synthesized pheromone using odor-conditioned rheotaxis

Characterization of vertebrate chemo-orientation strategies over long distances is difficult because it is often not feasible to conduct highly controlled hypothesis-based experiments in natural environments. To overcome the challenge, we couple in-stream behavioral observations of female sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus) orienting to plumes of a synthesized mating pheromone, 7 alpha,12 alpha,24-trihydroxy-5 alpha-cholan-3-one-24-sulfate (3kPZS), and engineering algorithms to systematically test chemo-orientation hypotheses. In-stream field observations and simulated movements of female sea lampreys according to control algorithms support that odor-conditioned rheotaxis is a component of the mechanism used to track plumes of 3kPZS over hundreds of meters in flowing water. Simulated movements of female sea lampreys do not support that rheotaxis or klinotaxis alone is sufficient to enable the movement patterns displayed by females in locating 3kPZS sources in the experimental stream. Odor-conditioned rheotaxis may not only be effective at small spatial scales as previous described in crustaceans, but may also be effectively used by fishes over hundreds of meters. These results may prove useful for developing management strategies for the control of invasive species that exploit the odor-conditioned tracking behavior and for developing biologically inspired navigation strategies for robotic fish.

Application of clutch to clutch gear shift technology for a new automatic transmission

For the purpose of engineering development for a new 8-step speed automatic transmission,a simplified dynamic model for this gearbox was established and key parameters which affected the shift quality were *** at four different shift types,the ideal characteristics of shift clutch and engine control were set *** using torque estimation method,PI slip control algorithm and engine coordinated control principle,the control model and transmission controller were well developed for three shift phases which included rapid-fill phase,torque phase and inertia *** testing environment on the rig and prototype vehicle level was built and the testing results obtained in ultimate condition could verify the accuracy and feasibility of this shift control *** peak jerk during shift process was controlled within ±2 g/s where the smooth gearshift was *** development proposal and algorithm have a high value for engineering application.

Accurate power factor definitions are of great importance for industries due to the fact that they affect the billing strategy. They also considerably affect the generation and distribution losses of the power system. At the moment, there are some ambiguities in power definitions to be used for this purpose. In recent years, because of a rapid growth in industry and the use of variable loads such as electrical furnaces and variable speed motors, there is a need for fast compensators that are capable of tracking load changes. One of these facilities is TSC, a capacitor bank that is controlled by static switches (thyristors). In this paper, the performance of these compensators in power factor correction for asymmetrical and variable loads in terms of PF-control capability, system losses and the THD of the input current based on various power factor definitions has been investigated, and a PF definition compatible with a commonly used control algorithm is proposed. Simulations have been carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC software environment.

According to the development and current situation of DSP (Digital Signal Processing) at home and abroad, using high-speed computation ability and rich resources of TMS320F28335 chip to achieve higher real-time demand motion control in numerical control system (linear interpolation, continuous interpolation, position control, Serial communication, etc). On that basis, this paper discusses realization of hardware and software design method of this controller. Such movement controller has the perfect function and excellent performance, it often provides the multi-axis motion coordination control on the plate, and has higher control precision.

This paper presents the analysis, design and implementation of a novel open-winding permanent magnetic starter-generator using the open-winding permanent magnetic machine for overcoming the difficulties of voltage regulation, narrow speed range and low power factor of the permanent magnetic machine for the vehicles applications. In the proposed method, one side of the open-winding permanent magnetic machine is connected to rectifier for the DC voltage output, the other is connected to the inverter for the regulation of the DC voltage. And the open-winding machine can be reconstructed to be the conventional machine as the starter. In contrast to the conventional starter-generator for the vehicle, the speed range of the generation process and efficiency of the machine are improved obviously. A new control algorithm of double-loop for regulation of the DC voltage and current of machine is developed and verified by the simulation results.

As the long transmission line, complex mechanism, poor performance of regulation and control and low sensitivity of mechanical let-off, so it can not meets the requirements of stable tension. Therefore, the let-off mechanical was improved. This paper takes let-off system of SAURER400 rapier loom as experimental subject, mathematical modeling to every parts of loom, and takes simulation and comparison. The simulation results show the improvement of mechanical can meet the basic requirements of weaving, and it indicates the works that done former are effective and correct.
