Numerical approach to nonlinear control design

The paper presents a new approach to designing tracking control of uncertain nonlinear plants. The approach is entirely based on numerical methods and corresponding recurrence relations. It results in recursive control laws that resolve plant nonlinearities and compensate all disturbances and parameter variations. Also, it enables a free shaping of the control error dynamics. control algorithms based on the method of successive substitutions and the Newton's method are studied in detail. Detailed description of an application and experimental evaluation is included.

System simulation and control of batch-fed solid waste incinerators

Frequently, due to the irregularities in fuel properties of the wastes and variations in feed rates, the operation of a batch-fed incinerator may encounter pressure surges and transient flue gas leakages. A lumped model to simulate the flow, pressure, and temperature behavior of an incineration system was developed, according to the fundamental conservation laws governing the overall balances of flow and thermal-mechanical energies of the system components. The system dynamic responses to flow control and waste burning variations were analyzed numerically. Qualitatively the results correctly reflected the observed operational characteristics of batch-fed incinerators. The lumped system model can serve as a tool to design control algorithms. The concepts and approaches adopted in this work can be used as the basis for further expansion in details toward the development of an incinerator system simulator for operator training purposes.

Feedforward and feedback control strategy for active noise cancellation in ducts

This paper presents the theoretical work about active noise cancellation in ducts. The proposed control system is designed based on the assumption of a one-dimensional sound field. The controller consists of a feedforward block which serves as a noise observer. The feedback portion of the control algorithm is to minimize residual disturbances. Closed-loop stability of the MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) system is analyzed and the result shows that the dynamic influenced by the space-feedforward and feedback controllers can be decoupled. Both semi-infinite and finite-length ducts are considered in this study and simulation examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

Variable structure hybrid control of manipulators in unconstrained and constrained motion

This paper addresses the problem of robust hybrid position and force control of robot manipulators. Variable structure control with sliding mode is used to implement the hybrid control strategy. Two variable structure control algorithms are developed in task space. One of the algorithms is based on hierarchical control method, and the other is developed for control of robot manipulators used to carried out both unconstrained and constrained tasks.

Enhancing hydrostatic gear efficiency through nonlinear optimal control strategies

Energy efficiency and short response times are usually conflicting goals. In the case of hydrostatic gears, two basic system configurations are commonly used, which allow to obtain better efficiency - the primary control setup - or faster responses - the secondary control. In this paper, (1) a different control setup is proposed, combining both primary and secondary control, and this new setup is shown to allow even faster responses than the secondary control having, in general, much lower energy requirements. We also address (2) the question of the design of a multiobjective optimal control for the proposed nonlinear structure, showing that the noninferior set, i.e., the set of points where the reduction of one cost function needs the increase of the others, depends on the control algorithm used. It is shown that combined use of pump and motor swash plate displacement yields a better trade-off between response speed and efficiency, and that solving approximately the nonlinear optimization problem delivers better efficiency than optimizing a system consisting of the original plant and a linearizing feedback.

Dynamic analysis and identification of gas tungsten arc welding process for weld penetration control

In this study, gas tungsten arc welding is analyzed and modeled as a 2-input (welding current and arc length) 2-output (weld depression and width) multivariable process. Experiments under a number of typical welding conditions are performed to excite and identify the process characteristics and variations. It is observed that the model parameters vary in a large range with the experimental conditions. A real-time model frame with only a few parameters to be identified on-line is proposed. Based on the obtained models, the process characteristics in terms of inertia, delay, nonminimum phase, and coupling are given. These characteristics suggest an adaptive predictive decoupling control algorithm. By designing and implementing the suggested control algorithm with the real-time model, excellent results have been achieved for both simulation and practical control. This shows that the dynamic analysis and identification provide sufficient process information for design of the control system. © 1996 by ASME.

Semi-rearrangeably nonblocking operation of Clos networks in the multirate environment

We study the semi-rearrangeably nonblocking (SRN) operation of asymmetrical three-stage Clos switching networks in the multirate environment, We develop a basic algorithm that balances the established connections among middle-stage switches by performing a small number of rearrangements per disconnection, For this algorithm, we first derive general conditions under which rearranging from a single middle-stage switch is sufficient to achieve SRN operation, In the most general case, however, a sequence of rearrangements from several middle-stage switches may be required for SRN operation, An algorithm to achieve this sequence of rearrangements is presented and its correctness is proved, The minimum resource requirements to achieve SRN operation, in terms of the number of middle-stage switches, are derived for various cases.

Estimating in-cylinder precombustion mixture temperatures using acoustic resonances

The air-fuel ratio of automotive engines during the warm-up period is difficult to control and contributes a substantial portion of the emissions on the EPA test cycle. High bandwidth estimation of the in-cylinder charge temperature provides opportunities for improvement in spark ignition (SI) engine control algorithms. Pressure sensor based algorithms for estimating air-fuel ratio (AFR) have been shown to be improved by bulk temperature information. This paper explores the suitability of using acoustic resonances to estimate charge temperature in the presence of an unknown AFR and without the 'sharp' excitation of diesel or knocking SI combustion. A technique that allows for the estimation of the precombustion average bulk charge temperature during a 1-2 ms interval based on acoustic resonance data gathered from a pressure transducer is described. A parameter estimation algorithm suitable for extracting the required frequency information from short data sets is identified. The variation in temperature estimates as a function of AFR has been explored using a computer simulation that accounts for the change in the ratio of specific heats with changing mixture strength. The performance of the acoustic resonance based temperature estimates has been evaluated by comparing them to predictions based on a polytropic compression.

Application of Fuzzy Sets in Elevator System control

The paper considers the elevator group control problem which is actual in large premises where a group of co-ordinated cars is necessary to serve the transport of passengers. Efficient elevator control requires low passenger waiting and transport times, together with low energy consumption, under different traffic conditions. In the paper two algorithms based on fuzzy sets are proposed to perform this task. The first algorithm acts as a “soft switch” between two classical algorithms, each covering a specific traffic situation. The second algorithm is entirely based on fuzzy sets and is appropriate for all situations. The performance of the algorithms in tested case studies gave promising results so that the algorithms will be additionally tested, optimised and statistically evaluated in different case studies.

Hierarchical control Design and Verification with Adaptive Interpreted Petri Nets

In this contribution, logic controller design and verification methods are applied to Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS). Logic control design methods as well as corresponding verification methods are extended to meet the demand of high flexibility in FMS control By introduction of adaptive interpreted Petri nets for FMS control, a hierarchical controller approach results. The controller hierarchies correspond to the control levels in FMS. Methods for FMS controller verification and implementation are outlined.
