A unified approach to the steady state and dynamics modelling of chemical plants based on a partially explicit model is presented. Rational division of the functions between a human and a computer is discussed. Inner form of the model in a computer and algorithms of automatic solution planning are presented. General structure of the modelling package, automatic compilation of modelling programs and linearized models are also considered. Input language for describing plant models and problems solved using the latter are illustrated.

The remote control system of an extensive high-pressure gas network is discribed. Starting with the particularities of natural gas distribution, the hardware part of the process controlcomputer is introduced. The need for an automatic control is made plain by discussing the various boundary conditions under which gas transport is done. Finally the software elemements of network control such as data transmission, real-time simulation, prognosis and prospective simulation are discussed with respect to special demands of the gas-industry.

The problem of security assessrrent of each sub-system of an extended interconnected power system needs, for each sub-system, the knowledge of equivalents related to the behaviour of the other partners. The particular topic of this paper is to analyze the reactive power behaviour of an external system when a large disturbance of active power (loss of a large generator f. i.) occurs in the study system. An extended Norton theorem is derived; it shows that a sensitivity matrix relating the voltage variations to the reactive current variations on the ties is only a part of a suitable external equivalent. The results given by using only this matrix are thus approximate. Nevertheless, after L.F.C. actuation this approximation seems to be perfectly acceptable, particularly if the a.v.r. gains are sufficiently high.

A new type of automatic electrode controller for submerged-arc furnaces has been developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM), in response to the need for some means of overcoming the problems that are experienced on large submerged-arc turnaces. This paper deals with the development of the algorithm for the prototype unit. This paper describes the phases of identificatio a multivariable controller for use in an industrial plant, of the important output variables of a grinding circuit is hampered by the interaction between different variables, a generally not possible for these interactions to be elimin tional controllers. A pilot-plant study of a one-stage grinding circuit has sh control of a complex industrial circuit is feasible with a controller designed by the Inverse Nyquist Array method. This conclusion is further supported by a preliminary study carried out on tion of an industrial milling circuit in a gold extraction. The grinding circuit of the industrial plant, which consis mill and two pebble mills with classification by hydrocyclones, was fully instrumented, and a process-controlcomputer was installed. Open-loop tests were carried out on the plant and the resu derivation of a dynamic model in the form of a matrix of transfer fuctions. The model was used to design a multivariable controller for the griding circuit.

PEARL is a user-oriented high level programming language designed for a wide spectrum of process controlapplications. PEARL still seems to be the only one with true embedded realtime features high enough in level to grant economical process control for industrial applications Application experience is then described by reporting about four different control systems programmed with PEARL which control four different types of technical processes: continuous, batch, discrete particle, and sequential processes. All projects were successful. This suggests that PEARL truly can be called an application independent realtime programming language Finally, some facts about the availability of PEARL are given. A survey is given on new impacts of artificial intelligence on automatic control. Artificial intelligence offers its tools to automatic control at two decision points: input and control. Visual, voice and information pattern as inputs to control systems are treated, especially for quality control, medical applications. A glimpse on expert systems illuminates the possibilities of automated dispatcher and other decision making. New algorithms solving very complex problems offer several possibilities. The multi-input multi-output servomechanism concept is applied to conventional tie line bias control (TBC) as an example of decentralised automatic generation control (AGC); to a centralised form of TBC and to another centralised AGC scheme. The tracking properties of the AGC servocontroller and decoupling from higher levels of control are explored together with improved stability possibilities in the case of centralised coordination.
