The rapid development in the field of microelectronics results in an ever growing number of economically effective applications. At the same time, the contradictions between traditional production technologies and the possibilities offered by advanced automation techniques become visible. From this problem are derived the demands to be made on the improvement of the process measuring instrumentation, process control and quality assurance. This paper describes the application of a commonly used microcomputer system based on the Motorola M6800 CPU to a widely userdefinable control concept. The structure of a control system is declared by a communication between user and microcomputer, and is composed in a blockorientated way using blocks for controllers, setpoints, summations, some nonlinearities etc. This allows a very easy realisation of any structure of a control system.

This paper describes a power plant combustion control system modeling and simulating work. The system is part of an integrated steel making plant, which belongs to Acominas, a company located in Minas Gerais State - Brazil. Three boilers, working in parallel, feed main steam, at 60 kgf/cm 2 - 485 C to a single steam collector drum. The combustion control system was designed in a boiler following strategy to burn, simultaneously, four different fuels. The boiler furnace combustion control system is, as usual, made out of two main control loops, fuel and air, that are interlocked. The combustion control system process was modeled using input-output type models, assuming a linear behavior for the plants in each control loop. The developed model was simulated in an IBM-PC XT compatible microcomputer. The simulation results show that the fuel control loops, under certain restrictions, can work all in automatic. Also, a new air fuel interlock strategy was modeled and showed good results in the simulation. The conclusions of this study are being successfuly implemented in the actual plant.

This work has resulted In the design of an adaptive autopilot (Van Amerongen, 1984). At the moment research is concentrated on the design of an autopilot which uses the rudder not only for course keeping but for stabilization of the roll angle as well. This paper demonstrates how modern computer-aided design methods may help in designing such a system, especially when analytical methods fail because of non-linearities of the process.

The direct optimization control method has many advantages in applications to real processes, though most of which are limited to be stationary. This report aims at a practical application of the direct optimization control to nonlinear non-stationary systems. A refuse incinerator plant has been taken as the object of control and a direct optimization control system has been constructed. The system consists of two stages: the optimization stage under constraints; and the correction stage of constrains themselves depending on the state; of process. It has been clarified that the proposed control method is expedient for application of the direct optimization control method to the control of non-stationary systems.

control engineers are faced with problems of increasing difficulty, due to the growing complexity of our technical installations and to the concern for environmental and related Problems. This should be taken into consideration in the educational process. Several courses in the graduate control program have for this reason been taught in a grourpteachinor project-oriented way since 1976. Seven different courses that have been offered are described in this paper. Examples are: Solar Energy Heating Systems control, Machine Tool Position control, Identification. The experience that has been gained from these courses is summarized. The inclusion of such courses in control programs is advocated.

A program package, called MUSIC, has been developed for implementing simulation and real-time control algorithms on PDP-11 and VAX family computers. The control structure can be described by means of a block diagram. The blocks represent the algorithms and control functions, while the topology is defined by the connections of the blocks. A set of standard blocks is available and the user can define and add his own blocks to the system using a standard software interface. Blocks can have adjustable parameters and an arbitrary internal complexity. From the selected set of blocks an actual simulation or real-time control program and a database can be built using a program generator. The interaction with this control program is performed via a separate command interface program. With this interface the user may supply interactively all the information describing the control system. A user-written optional third program can also be added to the system to perform additional calculations outside the control loop or to realise individual command interfaces. A graphic display facility facilitates the evaluation of results and the comparison of a set of solutions. The whole system is embedded in a user-friendly menu, so the user hardly needs any computer-dependent particular knowledge.

A survey on the use of packages for computer-aided design in control systems in the United States of America was taken, and this paper presents the results of that survey. Summaries of the nine most frequently used packages are given. Altogether, forty-five packages were reported in the survey. The applications of packages, e.g. design, simulation, or identification, are given. Results on the use of design methods are presented. The two most popular are classical and the linear quadratic regulator. The paper also contains results on the types of computers most often used for CADCS. The clear winner was the IBM-PC and IBM-PC compatibles.
