An exact penalty function type of algorithm is proposed to solve a general class of constrained parameter optimization problems. The proposed algorithm has the property that any solution obtained by it will always satisfy the problem constraints, and that it will obtain a solution to the constrained problem, within a given specified tolerance, by solving a single unconstrained problem, i.e. it is not necessary to solve a sequence of unconstrained optimization problems. The algorithm applies a modification of Rosenbrock's (Rosenbrock, 1960) polynomial boundary penalty function, and a negative exponential penalty function with moving parameters, to modify the objective function in the neighborhood of the constrained region; a robust unconstrained algorithm (Davison and Wong, 1975) is then used to solve the resulting unconstrained optimization problem. Some standard test functions are included to show the performance of the algorithhm. Application of the algorithm is then made to solve some computer-aided design problems occurring in the area of control system synthesis.

A development and test facility for microprocessor based control algorithms has been devised with emphasis on minimising hardware cost and making the maximum use of existing facilities. A minicomputer with resident cross assembler is used to develop control programs which can be directly transferred by a digital interface to a microprocessor acting as a digital controller in a hybrid simulation of the system dynamics. This configuration allows both hardware and software elements of any installation to be simultaneously evaluated. The facility is applied to the design of compensators for a chemical process.

This contribution refers to certain problems bearing upon the formation of a system generator programing medium of an automatic synthesis for the modular construction of a packaged program for real time technological process control. The package is made up of standard subroutines-functional modules, carrying out the basic control functions. The user defines the task in the problem-oriented "graf language" designed by an analysis of project documentation for automated systems of technological process control. From the viewpoint of software, this is an establishment of a communication and synchronization system, implemented by standard connectors and starting subroutines, operating over the central database and by a system of tables for recording required items of information on the structure of the control package.

The implementation of self-tuning controllers using a portable microcomputer system is described. Self-tuning control theory is shown to provide a variety of control objectives such as model-reference, optimal Smith prediction and the minimization of a general cost-function. Hardware and software details of the portable computer, SESAME, are presented with particular reference to the use of a new high-level language, control Basic, and to the coding of the recursive parameter updating routine. Studies of the application of self-tuning to the control of roomtemperature, acid neutralization, and batch chemical reactors in industry are outlined.

The 400/110/10 kV network of the Hamburgisehe Electricitätswerke (HEW) comprising 10 power plants, 61 substations and 6500 transformer kiosks is under on-line control from 5 centres on 3 operational tiers. The new computerized system for the 2 lower tiers shows novel features as for workflow organisation in the control rooms, data-amendment and protection. A mimic board was not applied. Due to these conditions, the system was designed from scratch, not using standard application software.

A micro-processor based control system is presented. The hardware and software requirements that led to system development are presented and discussed. These resulted in a system software, a high-level package for data acquisition monitoring and alarming and a high level process control oriented language. The basic idea was to build an end-user oriented system to allow process or control engineers to generate their own control programs. Finally two industrial applications are presented: 1) a distributed control of aluminium electrolytic cells and 2) a two-level control of an ethane/ethylene superfractionator.

DISCO is a di stributed, supervisory and co ntrol system designed for use in industrial process controlapplications and/or research and development laboratories. The program is a sequential file processor designed to execute on a distributed network of micro + mini + maxi computers in conjunction with the computer vendor's operating system and network software. A modular structure, standard software interfaces, and a high level of support for the user-interface provide a very flexible, user-oriented system that can handle a wide variety of applications.
