Experiments that have been realized in a digital computercontrol laboratory are described in this paper. A set of 17 experiments that are used in undergraduate and graduate laboratory assignments as well as in research are briefly described. Three experiments, namely a coin exchanging machine, an inverted pendulum and the tension and speed control system in a tare transporting mechanism are then presented in some detail. The experience that has been obtained from running the laboratory for many years is summarized.

Recently much debate has been generated over the issue of public transportation service for handicapped people. In this context, it is the purpose of this paper to present an unpublished algorithm which has been recently implemented to control by computer a fleet of vehicles providing a door-to-door service for handicapped people in Brussels. A prospective customer makes his wishes known by making a public telephone call to the control centre of the system 48 hours in advance. So the set of customers and their requirements are known in advance. The development of effective routes and schedules for the vehicles is made for the whole day and will not change. The algorithm allots the demands for transportation in a way that total transported persons within a day is maximized. At the end of the paper, we will consider the extension of the algorithm to the real time allotment.

An essential pending problem in the modeling and control of fermentation processes is the variability of biological systems, expressed as predictable or unpredictable structural alterations in the control plant. Such phenomena, naturally or artificially induced, require flexible alteration of control system structure by proper switching to one or another control strategy. In order to overcome the rigid restriction imposed upon the plant structure by the conventional control approach, we propose here a two-level hierarchical scheme, which provides the control system with a kind of structural adaptability. In the second level of the system, which operates in the structural space of the plant and performs intelligent functions, the current plant structure is recognized as an element of a finite set of structures defined on the base of expert knowledge. In the first level, which works in the state space of the plant, the control strategy relevant to the current plant structure is picked out from a defined pool and the corresponding control action is calculated. This approach has been realized as a real-time software system intended for control of various fermentation processes.

The complexity of modern industrial installations requires the utilization of interconnected programmable logic controllers. A tool is necessary for the formal specification and validation of the control procedures, altogether with methods allowing a direct implementation of these specifications in the system, aimed at the computer simulation of process flow performances. This paper deals with a Petri net approach to the automatic design of control programs supervising concurrent, pipeline-like flowing processes. Its objective lies in the formal statement of the conditions sufficient for the design of a class of net models reflecting all admissible controls of processes flow. Shortcomings and benefits of the introduced approach are discussed as well as its further developments are pointed out.

In this work a dynamic analysis for the air-gas path of a balanced draft boiler is presented. As is well known, in this part of the plant large and rapid pressure variations can arise in particular situations (for instance in case of fuel trip) which can cause damage to mechanical structures. To achieve a basis of evaluation of these phenomena, a mathematical model of the air-gas system has been developped; the system has been divided into subsystems (fans, air and gas ducts, furnace, air preheaters, dampers) and for each of them a first principles mathematical model has been written. The submodels have then been coupled together to obtain the description of the whole system. This task has been accomplished automatically by means of a suitable “computer aided modelling” code, described in detail in (Marcocci and Spelta, Owing to this modular approach, a wide range of possible plant configurations can be represented. This paper first describes the models of the principal subsystems and the criteria which have been followed to represent with acceptable accuracy the main phenomena involved; a practical application to the air gas path of a real power plant in then presented, and the results obtained in the most critical situations are discussed, with particular attention to operating strategies and control system evaluation.

Recently five conventional batch processes after the cold rolling process have been replaced by the continuous annealing and processing line (C.A.P.L.) for cold rolled sheets of mild steel and high strength steel in order to obtain higher productivity, labor savings, energy savings and the manufacture of new products. In this remarkable process, the strip heat cycle must be mainteined at a target strip temperature from the metallurgical point of view. This paper covers the process computercontrol system of the C.A.P.L., the strip temperature control system which utilizes a Kalman-Bucy filter, and the adaptive control method for improving the control performance of the strip temperature control system.
